These ten used-car choices suit different priorities—from low running costs and daily usefulness to V8 power or rear-wheel-drive handling. None is automatically the best; condition and the organizer’s rules matter as much as the badge.
MotorTrend’s April 21, 2025 U.S. guide said reliable examples across its selection could be found for $15,000 or less, with some regularly below $5,000. Those are dated editorial estimates, not current market valuations. See the guide.
How to choose an affordable track car
Start with the specific car’s mechanical condition, then compare what it will cost to prepare and operate. Track use puts sustained demands on tires, brakes and cooling systems; a cheap car with deferred maintenance can quickly become the expensive choice. MotorTrend identifies tires, brake pads and high-quality brake fluid as key track consumables, and notes that heavier, more powerful cars can cost substantially more to run. In its comparison, C5 Corvette tire and pad costs may exceed those of a Fit or Miata by more than four times. MotorTrend’s cost and model notes offer context, not a quote for your own car.
- Running costs: Compare tire and brake needs, parts availability and likely repair work—not just purchase price.
- Power and weight: More speed can be appealing, but often brings greater consumable costs.
- Learning and practicality: A forgiving, light car can be rewarding for a new driver; cargo room and daily comfort may matter if it is also your transportation.
- Event eligibility: Check the exact organizer’s vehicle, safety and rollover rules before buying or booking. Requirements vary by event.
That focus on durability and parts supply is also reflected in Evo’s July 2025 UK guide, though its market and prices should not be applied to U.S. buyers. Read Evo’s guide.

Ten used cars to consider
This is a shortlist, not a ranking. The price figures below are MotorTrend’s estimates when its guide was published on April 21, 2025; they are not current transaction prices or guarantees about a particular car’s condition.
| Car | Why it may fit | Trade-offs and price context |
|---|---|---|
| 2007–2013 Honda Fit (GD3/GE8) | Light, practical hatchback with friendly handling, inexpensive parts and room for track gear. MotorTrend says even the heaviest second-generation example weighs under 2,600 lb. | Not a straight-line-speed choice. MotorTrend cited examples under $5,000 at publication. |
| 1998–2004 Chevrolet Corvette C5 | Factory V8 performance and strong track pace make it a power-per-dollar option. | Tires and pads can cost far more than on a Fit or Miata; low purchase price does not mean low running costs. |
| 1998–2015 Mazda Miata NB/NC | Light, forgiving handling makes these roadsters natural platforms for learning. | Older convertibles may need roll bars for some events or circuits. Repeated track use can raise transmission or engine concerns depending on generation and use. MotorTrend’s dated estimates put NB examples under $6,000 and NC examples under $9,000. |
| 1999–2005 BMW 3 Series E46 | A more powerful, composed option with capability that may not require extensive modification. | Upkeep is higher than for simpler alternatives. |
| 2013–2020 Subaru BRZ/Toyota 86/Scion FR-S | Fixed-roof alternative to the Miata, with agile handling and usable cargo space. | MotorTrend flags valve-spring and clutch-release-bearing concerns on early cars; verify recall work is current. |
| 1994–2009 Ford Mustang GT (SN95/S197) | Torque, plentiful parts and rear-wheel-drive character. The SCCA identifies 2005–09 S197 Mustang GTs as a Club Spec platform. | Power and weight can increase consumable costs. MotorTrend’s estimates at publication were under $6,000 for SN95 GTs and under $8,000 for S197 GTs. |
| 2003–2009 Nissan 350Z (Z33) | More power and handling capability out of the box than lightweight choices. | Heavier and costlier to maintain than the simplest options. MotorTrend cited examples under $7,000 at publication. |
| 1994–1999 Dodge/Plymouth Neon | A light, inexpensive possibility if you find a sound manual example. | Clean survivors may be difficult to source. |
| 2001–2007 Subaru Impreza WRX | All-wheel-drive traction and wagon practicality can make it useful beyond track days. | Power modifications can raise costs and hurt reliability; early manual transmissions deserve careful evaluation. |
| 2000–2007 Toyota MR-S (W30) | Light, mid-engine roadster with engaging handling. | MotorTrend cautions that the stock engine may not tolerate repeated hard track use without addressing known weaknesses. |
MotorTrend’s April 2025 guide also estimated first-generation BRZ/86/FR-S examples at well under $10,000 at publication. Availability and condition vary, so treat all these figures as historical guide estimates rather than present-day prices. Source and model caveats.

Budget for preparation, not just purchase
Before committing, arrange a careful inspection of the individual car and account for maintenance or repairs it needs. A model’s reputation cannot tell you whether a particular example has been neglected, modified poorly or maintained well. Track use magnifies the consequences of deferred work.
- Include tires, brake pads and high-quality brake fluid in the track budget. Choose fluid and parts that suit the vehicle and the event’s requirements rather than assuming one product fits every application.
- Check the organizer’s technical inspection and rollover rules for the specific event. MotorTrend notes that convertibles require roll bars in its guide and that older Miatas generally need one on larger circuits, but requirements are not universal.
- For an early BRZ, 86 or FR-S, confirm applicable recall work and known concerns have been addressed.
- Ask what modifications have been made and keep records of maintenance and repairs when available.
MotorTrend’s editorial guide puts the basic idea plainly: “You can take just about anything to a track—if it’s not leaving a visible trail of fluids and won’t roll over in the first tight corner.” That colorful line is not a substitute for the event’s technical inspection rules. Which one makes sense for you?
- Prioritize low running costs and daily utility: Start your search with the Fit; a Miata can also suit drivers who value light, approachable handling and can meet the event’s rollover requirements.
- Want more power out of the box: Consider the C5 Corvette, Mustang GT or 350Z, while weighing their greater potential tire, brake and upkeep costs.
- Prefer a fixed-roof sports car: The BRZ/86/FR-S offers agile handling and cargo utility, with specific early-car concerns to check.
- Need traction or extra everyday usefulness: The WRX’s all-wheel drive and wagon practicality may appeal, but avoid treating power modifications as a free upgrade.
- Looking for an unusual lightweight choice: A sound manual Neon or MR-S may be engaging, but finding the right example and understanding its specific needs are central to the decision.
The SCCA describes Club Spec as: “Buy one car, do all the things – that’s what Club Spec’s all about.” Its official page identifies the 2005–09 Mustang GT among the eligible platforms. Check SCCA Club Spec details.
