The ten picks below are 2026-model-year candidates whose prices and fuel-economy figures are reported in Car and Driver’s compact-car and affordability rankings. They are not an objective ranking: the best fit depends on the configuration, your priorities and the actual price offered by a dealer.
Starting MSRPs exclude destination charges, taxes, title, license and dealer-specific pricing unless noted otherwise. MPG ranges can span different powertrains or trims; confirm the EPA figure for the exact car you are comparing.
How to compare affordable daily-driver cars
A low base price is only one part of ownership. Compare the price of the specific trim you would buy, its EPA combined MPG, the passenger and cargo layout you need, and the safety-test result that applies to its body style and model year. Car and Driver says its affordability ranking evaluates roughly 200 data points, including acceleration, handling, comfort, cargo space, fuel efficiency, value and driving enjoyment; that framework is useful, but its rankings reflect the publisher’s weighting rather than a universal score.
The starting prices and economy figures below come from Car and Driver’s 2026 compact-car ranking. They are reported comparison figures, not dealer quotes or a substitute for the EPA label on a particular vehicle. “Combined MPG” is not interchangeable with MPGe, which is used for plug-in hybrids.

Car and Driver’s separate 2026 cheapest-new-cars ranking describes its included sedans and hatchbacks as under $30,000. Prices can change, and the listed starting MSRP does not tell you the out-the-door cost or the price of a trim with the features you want.
Which affordable new car fits your daily drive?
2026 Kia K4: roomy entry-price pick
The K4 starts at a reported $23,535, the lowest starting MSRP among these ten. Car and Driver describes it as affordable and roomy, while noting that its styling promises more sportiness than its driving character delivers. Its reported combined economy is 28–33 mpg, so check the figure for the configuration you are considering rather than treating the range as one car’s result.
2026 Nissan Sentra: a value-focused sedan
With a reported starting MSRP of $23,875 and 33–34 mpg combined, the Sentra is a relatively inexpensive way into this group. Car and Driver notes its refreshed design alongside a familiar four-cylinder engine and continuously variable transmission (CVT). The 2026 Sentra is listed by IIHS as a Top Safety Pick+ for the 2026–27 model years; confirm the award’s details for the exact vehicle before relying on it.
Rank #2
2026 Hyundai Elantra: broad choice of powertrains
The Elantra’s reported $24,120 starting MSRP is paired with a 31–54 mpg combined range that includes hybrid configurations. That spread is not a single-trim estimate: identify whether you are comparing a gasoline or hybrid model and verify its EPA figure. Hyundai identifies the 2026 Elantra 4-door sedan as an IIHS Top Safety Pick. Hyundai also says its MSRP excludes freight, tax, title and license, and describes its fuel-economy numbers as EPA estimates for comparison purposes.
2026 Toyota Corolla: a straightforward compact option
The Corolla has a reported starting MSRP of $24,420 and 34 mpg combined in Car and Driver’s listing. Those numbers make it a useful baseline when comparing the cost and economy of compact sedans. Confirm the exact trim and equipment before comparing dealer prices.
2026 Volkswagen Jetta: another lower-cost sedan
The Jetta starts at a reported $25,270, with 33–34 mpg combined across the listed configurations. It costs more to enter than the K4, Sentra, Elantra or Corolla on these reported starting prices. Whether that premium is worthwhile depends on the trim’s equipment and how it suits your commute; compare actual configurations rather than base prices alone.
2026 Mazda 3: choose sedan or hatchback access
The Mazda 3 starts at a reported $25,885 and is listed at 26–30 mpg combined. Its sedan and hatchback body styles give buyers different cargo access, so consider what you regularly carry and how you load it. The sedan and hatchback are both on IIHS’s 2026 Top Safety Pick+ list; verify the award’s applicable year and configuration details for the car you are shopping.
2026 Honda Civic: verify economy by configuration
The Civic’s reported starting MSRP is $25,990. Car and Driver’s ranking summary lists EPA MPG as unavailable for the model, so it does not support a single economy figure here. Check the EPA figure for the particular powertrain and trim. IIHS lists the Civic 4-door hatchback as a 2026 Top Safety Pick; that award should not be assumed to cover every Civic body style or configuration.
2026 Subaru Impreza: hatchback practicality
The Impreza starts at a reported $27,790 and is listed at 29 mpg combined. It costs more at entry than most cars on this list, so weigh the price against the hatchback layout and the equipment on the trim you would actually buy. The available figures here do not establish a specific IIHS award for the Impreza.
2026 Toyota Prius: prioritize fuel economy
At a reported $29,845 starting MSRP, the Prius sits just below the list’s $30,000 cutoff. Car and Driver reports 49–57 mpg combined across configurations, making it the strongest stated combined-MPG range here, but the higher entry price means you should compare the premium with your expected driving and fuel use. IIHS lists the Prius hatchback as a 2026 Top Safety Pick+; check award applicability for the exact vehicle.
One more option: the Mazda 3’s trade-off
The Mazda 3’s reported economy range is lower than several alternatives, while its sedan and hatchback formats may better suit buyers who value their particular layout. Its price and fuel use should be compared against the exact trims you are cross-shopping, not just the model names.

IIHS’s 2026 small-car award list includes the Kia K4 4-door sedan (Top Safety Pick+), Nissan Sentra (2026–27, Top Safety Pick+), Hyundai Elantra 4-door sedan (Top Safety Pick), Mazda 3 sedan and hatchback (Top Safety Pick+), Honda Civic 4-door hatchback (Top Safety Pick), and Toyota Prius hatchback (Top Safety Pick+). Award eligibility can depend on model year, body style and tested configuration, so use the linked IIHS model details to check the specific car you are considering.

How to narrow the list before visiting a dealer
- Set an actual price ceiling. Treat the listed starting MSRP as a comparison point, then account for destination, taxes, title, license, dealer pricing and any trim upgrade needed for the features you want.
- Choose the body style and cargo access. Decide whether a sedan trunk or a hatchback opening better fits your regular passengers, bags and bulky items; compare the exact cars in person if access or visibility is a deciding factor.
- Match fuel economy to the exact powertrain. Look up the EPA label for the trim you intend to buy. Pay particular attention to the Elantra and Prius ranges, and do not treat plug-in-hybrid MPGe as equivalent to MPG.
- Check the safety award’s scope. Confirm the model year, body style and eligibility details on IIHS rather than assuming a badge applies across an entire nameplate.
- Compare like-for-like equipment. Evaluate the price of the trim with the comfort, convenience and safety features you need—not just each car’s base MSRP.
Car and Driver’s 2026 fuel-economy ranking says its ordering relies on official EPA efficiency data and distinguishes plug-in-hybrid MPGe from MPG. The agency label for the exact configuration remains the relevant comparison when shopping.
