If you’re shopping for a new small SUV without considering Honda or Toyota, these 10 models offer starting-price options from about $22,000 to just under $30,000 for the 2026 model year. This is a U.S.-market shortlist, not a ranked verdict on which SUV is best: the first nine prices come from Cars.com’s July 2026 roundup, and the Subaru Crosstrek is included as a near-$30,000 option cited in Consumer Reports’ 2026 Buying Guide. Your final price will depend on trim, destination, taxes, dealer fees, incentives, and local inventory.
2026 starting-price snapshot: 10 small SUVs besides Honda and Toyota
The prices below are dated published figures, not live dealer quotes. Cars.com supplied the July 2026 figures for the first nine models; Consumer Reports’ 2026 Buying Guide search result supplied the Crosstrek figure. The sources may use different fee assumptions, so compare each model’s current manufacturer pricing and a local out-the-door quote before deciding.

These figures create a useful affordability shortlist, not a market-wide ranking. The Crosstrek sits near the $30,000 mark, while the other nine entries were listed below it in Cars.com’s July 2026 snapshot.
What the starting prices do—and don’t—tell you
A starting price describes a particular entry trim, not necessarily the version you will want or the amount you will pay. Compare the same model year and trim, then add destination, taxes, dealer fees, accessories, and any available incentive. Incentives and inventory can vary by location and timing, so treat roundup prices as a research starting point rather than an offer.

Check how destination is handled
Different sources can publish different-looking prices because their fee assumptions differ. Mazda’s official 2026 CX-30 page lists a $26,375 starting MSRP for the model and says that figure excludes taxes, title, license, and a $1,495 destination charge ($1,540 in Alaska). It also gives the base model an EPA-estimated 27 mpg combined. Cars.com’s roundup lists $27,870 for the CX-30 2.5 S. Those numbers are not directly interchangeable: one is Mazda’s stated MSRP before specified fees, and the other is Cars.com’s published list figure.
Don’t assume all-wheel drive is standard—or available
In its July 2026 list, Cars.com identifies the Hyundai Venue, Chevrolet Trax, and Buick Envista as models that do not offer AWD. For models where it is available, Cars.com estimates AWD commonly adds roughly $1,500–$2,000. Confirm availability and pricing for the exact model year and trim you are considering; an AWD-equipped version may push the purchase price well above the entry figure.

How to narrow the shortlist to the right SUV
Decide whether you need AWD
If AWD is a requirement, remove the Venue, Trax, and Envista from this particular list, based on Cars.com’s July 2026 roundup. For the other entries, verify that the drivetrain is offered on the specific trim and get its price before comparing monthly payments or total cost.
Try your actual passengers and cargo
Bring the people and items you regularly carry to a test drive. Check rear-seat access and comfort, then load a stroller, sports gear, luggage, or other routine cargo. Edmunds’ review of the Envista describes good room in both rows alongside reduced cargo volume associated with its sloping roof—a reminder that passenger space and usable cargo space can involve trade-offs.

Pay attention to acceleration and everyday driving
Small SUVs can feel quite different behind the wheel. In a June 2025 Associated Press republication of Edmunds’ under-$30,000 SUV coverage, Edmunds described the redesigned 2025 Nissan Kicks as having optional AWD for the first time, while noting tepid acceleration and disappointing real-world fuel economy. That is a dated editorial observation about the 2025 model, not a 2026 instrumented comparison. Drive the current version yourself if power delivery or fuel economy is important to you.
Compare equipment on the exact trim
Do not assume that a low-priced base trim includes a feature you consider essential. Check the manufacturer’s current model-year specifications for the exact trim, including the safety and convenience equipment you want, and compare like with like. A higher trim or drivetrain can change the value calculation even when the model name stays the same.

Check current safety ratings and recalls separately
The prices and descriptions here do not establish comparable safety results or current recall status across all 10 models. Before buying, look up current crash-test ratings and search the official recall database using the vehicle’s year, make, model, and—when checking a specific vehicle—its VIN.

There are new small-SUV alternatives outside Honda and Toyota under or near a $30,000 starting-price budget, but the advertised starting figure is only the first comparison point. AWD availability, trim equipment, passenger and cargo fit, and the final local price can change which model makes sense for you. This list is an affordability-focused starting point, not a claim that one of these vehicles is the best choice for every buyer.
