These generation dates are commonly given as 1987–1995/96 for the YJ and 1997–2006 for the TJ. Jeep’s history materials use 1987–1996 for the YJ, while Jeep Canada describes YJ production through 1995 and the TJ as introduced for model year 1997. For a specific Jeep, check its VIN and vehicle documents rather than relying on a broad date range.

Styling and identity
The square headlights are the most recognizable YJ clue. The TJ returned to round headlights, a familiar Wrangler design feature. Styling is a matter of preference, so consider which generation’s look you want rather than treating one as objectively better.

Suspension and ride
The YJ uses leaf springs, while the TJ uses a four-link coil-spring suspension. Jeep describes the TJ’s suspension as improving on-road ride and increasing axle articulation off-road. Those are factory-design comparisons, not a guarantee that every TJ will ride or perform better than every YJ. Wear, tires, lift kits, repairs, and setup all affect the vehicle you are considering.
Interior and equipment
Jeep’s history of the TJ describes a new interior and driver and passenger airbags. Equipment can vary, so verify the features on the individual vehicle and do not assume a specific safety feature is present based only on the generation.

The TJ Unlimited is still a two-door Wrangler. Jeep says it offered 13 inches more cargo room than the standard-wheelbase model; it is distinct from the four-door Unlimited introduced in the later JK generation.
There is no universal winner. A well-maintained, suitable example may be a better buy than a neglected Jeep from the generation you initially prefer. Compare condition, rust, maintenance records, modifications, intended use, and the vehicle’s exact equipment before deciding.

Does a TJ always ride better than a YJ?
No. Jeep says the TJ’s coil-spring suspension improved on-road ride and axle articulation, but the condition, modifications, tires, and repairs on an individual Jeep can change how it drives.
