The manufacturer describes the run as a global production-car top-speed record, achieved with German driver Marc Basseng. Because the evidence is a BYD announcement from a test-track run, the claim should be reported as manufacturer-reported rather than as independently Guinness-certified.
What record did the Yangwang U9 Xtreme set?
The U9 Xtreme’s headline result is a measured 496.22 km/h. The familiar 308.3 mph figure is the rounded imperial conversion of BYD’s official metric result; BYD’s release gives the speed in kilometres per hour.
The run took place at ATP Automotive Testing Papenburg in Germany on 14 September 2025, with Marc Basseng driving. “Production-car record” describes BYD’s characterization of the result. The available evidence does not establish separate Guinness certification or an independently administered record process for this top-speed attempt.
How the claim should be understood
- Location: ATP Automotive Testing Papenburg, Germany.
- Date: 14 September 2025.
- Driver: Marc Basseng.
- Result: 496.22 km/h, approximately 308.3 mph.
- Status: BYD-reported global production-car top-speed record from a test-track run.
Is the 308.3 mph figure real?
It is a real figure reported by BYD for a specific test run, not a laboratory estimate or a marketing target. The important qualification is who established it and where: BYD announced the result after the Papenburg attempt, and the run occurred on a closed testing facility rather than a public road.

That distinction matters when comparing records. A manufacturer announcement can document what the company says its car achieved, while an independently governed record may impose its own timing, inspection, repeat-run or certification rules. No separate independent certification is established here, so the precise wording is “BYD reported that the U9 Xtreme reached 496.22 km/h.”
How limited is the U9 Xtreme?
Yangwang announced the Xtreme as a limited series of no more than 30 customer cars. That makes it a customer-production model in the company’s stated plan, but an exceptionally scarce one. The announced unit ceiling is not the same as evidence that all 30 cars have been built or delivered.
What makes the U9 Xtreme capable of that speed?
The Xtreme evolves from the Yangwang U9 architecture and combines a high-voltage electrical system, four high-speed motors and track-focused hardware. BYD describes the following specification set:
| System | BYD-stated detail | Why it matters at the track |
|---|---|---|
| Electrical architecture | 1200-volt ultra-high-voltage platform | Supports high-power delivery while helping manage current levels in a very high-output system. |
| Motors | Four motors, each capable of 30,000 rpm | Provides all-wheel drive and the rotational speed needed for extreme acceleration and top-speed operation. |
| Combined output | More than 3,000 PS | Supplies the power required to overcome aerodynamic drag at very high speed. |
| Battery | Lithium-iron-phosphate Blade Battery with a 30C discharge rate | Designed for the intense power demand of a record attempt. |
| Chassis control | Revised DiSus-X intelligent body-control system and BYD e4 Platform | Helps control body attitude and keep the car stable during acceleration and cornering. |
| Tires | Track semi-slicks; the Nürburgring program used GitiSport e·GTR2 PRO semi-slick tires | Increases available grip, with the trade-off that such tires are specialized for track use rather than ordinary road driving. |
| Brakes and cooling | Redesigned cooling system and titanium-alloy carbon-ceramic brakes | Supports repeated high-load operation and braking on a circuit. |
Why four motors matter
Four independently driven wheels let the control system distribute torque across the car rather than relying on one engine and a conventional mechanical drivetrain. That layout can improve traction during acceleration and give the vehicle more control authority when grip changes, although the record announcement does not publish a full torque-distribution map or aerodynamic data.

BYD’s DiSus-X system is described as an intelligent body-control system with “body-attitude control” for track applications. In practical terms, the suspension and control software are intended to manage pitch, roll and other body movements so the tires remain better positioned for braking, cornering and power application.

The Nürburgring record is a separate achievement
The U9 Xtreme also completed the 20.832-kilometre Nürburgring Nordschleife in 6:59.157 on 22 August 2025. BYD says that lap was more than five seconds faster than the previous Electric Super Sports Cars record and was the first sub-seven-minute lap in that class. Moritz Kranz drove the lap.
This is a circuit-lap result, not a top-speed measurement. Straight-line speed rewards power, gearing, drag management and a suitable run-off area; a Nordschleife lap also tests braking, cornering, thermal control, tires and suspension over a long and highly varied course.
How Nürburgring attempts are governed
The Nürburgring’s own reporting says official record attempts use calibrated timing, notary supervision and vehicle inspection by TÜV Rheinland. For the 20.8-kilometre lap, the defined course and a flying start are part of the procedure. Those controls provide context for the lap claim, but they do not convert the separate Papenburg top-speed announcement into an independently certified speed record.

Is it faster than the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+?
The U9 Xtreme is often discussed alongside the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ because both occupy the extreme top-speed category. A meaningful comparison requires more than placing two numbers side by side: the test location, timing method, vehicle specification, tires, production status and whether the run was independently certified all affect what the result means.
For the Yangwang, the documented result is BYD’s Papenburg announcement and a limited run of no more than 30 customer cars. The available evidence here does not provide a matched, independently verified comparison dataset for the Chiron, so it would be misleading to present a definitive apples-to-apples ranking beyond BYD’s stated record claim.

What “fastest production electric car” means here
BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li called the U9 Xtreme “the fastest production car in the world” and said the achievement made that car electric. That statement reflects BYD’s interpretation of the Papenburg result and the company’s planned customer production. It should not be broadened into a universal ranking of every electric vehicle without specifying the date, test conditions, production definition and certification standard.
What the drivers said
Stella Li credited Yangwang’s research and development team and Marc Basseng, describing the result as evidence of what the brand’s engineering commitment could achieve. Basseng said the car’s electric motors made the attempt possible because the car is quiet and has no combustion-engine load changes, allowing him to concentrate on the circuit.

Those comments explain the team’s engineering rationale, but they are statements from the manufacturer and driver rather than independent measurements of acceleration, efficiency, tire life or repeatability.
What the record does—and does not—tell buyers
- It demonstrates an extraordinary closed-course top-speed capability from a very small electric production series.
- It does not establish a normal-road cruising speed, everyday range at high speed or suitability for public-road use.
- It does not show how many customer cars have been completed or whether every customer car has the exact record-attempt setup.
- It does not make the Papenburg speed and Nürburgring lap directly interchangeable; they measure different aspects of performance.
- It does not provide a verified retail price, ordinary replacement-tire cost or public availability schedule.
Bottom line for the Yangwang U9 Xtreme
The Yangwang U9 Xtreme has a manufacturer-reported 496.22 km/h capability from a September 2025 Papenburg run, backed by a 1200-volt system, four 30,000-rpm motors, more than 3,000 PS and specialized track hardware. Its separate 6:59.157 Nürburgring lap shows that the project was aimed at both maximum speed and circuit performance. The most accurate description is therefore a BYD-reported production-car top-speed record by a limited, no-more-than-30-car electric series—not an independently certified universal ranking.
