What is the Yangwang U8?
Yangwang is BYD’s high-end sub-brand, and the U8 was its first production vehicle. BYD unveiled both the brand and the SUV in January 2023, presenting the U8 as a premium off-road new-energy vehicle built around the e⁴ four-motor independent-drive platform. BYD said that platform could produce more than 1,100 horsepower and described capabilities including water flotation and a 360-degree tank turn. Why did BYD’s power figures change?
BYD’s launch-era announcements gave different output figures at different points. They should be reported with their dates rather than collapsed into one reconciled specification.

The April figures and pre-sale price appear in BYD’s Auto Shanghai announcement. The September figures, plug-in-hybrid description, and announced October 2023 delivery start are from BYD’s Premium Edition launch announcement. The range figure is specifically a CLTC claim; it is not a real-world range result or a directly comparable figure from another test cycle.

Is the U8 really a Land Rover Defender rival?
Autocar used “Defender rival” in its headline about a planned public-interest showcase in Geneva. That wording establishes the comparison as media positioning, not as a demonstrated head-to-head result. The available launch information does not provide a matched U8-versus-Defender test, nor enough like-for-like data to conclude which is better off road or overall. Autocar’s report
A meaningful comparison would need to account for the particular market and model versions, price, powertrain, acceleration and range test conditions, off-road hardware, dimensions, warranty, service support, and availability. The launch releases cited here do not establish those details for a current or international-market comparison.
What the 2023 launch details do—and do not—tell buyers
BYD priced the U8 Premium Edition at RMB 1,098,000 in September 2023 and said deliveries would begin in October that year. These are launch-era China details; they do not establish today’s price, model-year specifications, local homologation, or availability in other countries. The quoted power, acceleration, range, and special-function figures are manufacturer statements rather than independently verified results.
BYD also listed all-terrain tank turns, tire-blowout stabilization, and emergency flotation among the Premium Edition’s features. Such capability descriptions are not instructions to attempt those maneuvers: the announcements do not establish safe operating conditions or independent validation for using them.
