Yamaha plans to replace virgin aluminum alloy with recycled aluminum alloy in its DiASil cylinders, with the transition scheduled to cover all products using the design by 2030. The company estimates that completing the switch will reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 47,000 tonnes annually. That is Yamaha’s estimate; its October 6, 2026 announcement does not disclose the calculation method or baseline.
What Yamaha is changing
The announcement concerns the raw material used in DiASil cylinders—not a wholesale redesign or replacement of Yamaha engines. Yamaha will progressively switch these cylinders from virgin aluminum alloy to recycled aluminum alloy. It has not disclosed the recycled-content share for the cylinders or named the alloy supplier. Yamaha’s October 6, 2026 announcement describes the intended change and its estimated emissions impact.
What DiASil is—and why material choice matters
DiASil is Yamaha’s all-aluminum cylinder design, which the company says does not require an iron sleeve or plating. Yamaha says it first developed and deployed the design in 2002 and uses it in a range of motorcycle and scooter models. It identifies wear and seizure resistance, heat dissipation, lower weight, improved recyclability and lower manufacturing cost as benefits of the technology.
Yamaha expands the name as “Die-casting Aluminum-Silicon.” Its casting technology page says the process enabled mass production of an all-aluminum die-cast cylinder using an aluminum alloy containing 20% silicon. Yamaha’s casting technology overview does not establish that every DiASil cylinder uses an identical alloy formulation.

Why Yamaha says recycled alloy took development
Yamaha says conventional recycled materials could contain trace impurities that made it difficult to satisfy requirements for the cylinder’s metal microstructure, surface properties, corrosion resistance and other quality characteristics. The company reports that it designed a recycled alloy using thermodynamic calculations, then conducted repeated bench tests and vehicle evaluations. Yamaha says the alloy met its functional requirements and can be processed using the same production processes.
The announcement does not publish test protocols, numerical results or an independent evaluation. Its performance statement is Yamaha’s account of its own development work, not a quantified or independently verified comparison with the previous alloy.

Where the rollout starts
The initial transition is planned for commuter models produced in Indonesia, followed by a global rollout. Yamaha has not named the models or given individual rollout dates. The company’s stated target is to complete the switch across all products using DiASil in 2030.
What the 47,000-tonne figure means
Yamaha estimates an annual reduction of approximately 47,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions once the transition is complete across DiASil-using products, scheduled for 2030. This is a projected yearly reduction after full rollout, not a reported saving already achieved, and it refers to carbon dioxide—not 47,000 tonnes of elemental carbon.

The announcement does not provide the calculation method, comparison baseline, model-by-model production volumes or the models included in the estimate. Those omissions mean the figure should be read as Yamaha’s company estimate rather than an independently audited result.

Yamaha’s broader stated goal is to move all aluminum raw materials used in its own manufacturing to sustainable alternatives by 2030. Its current resource-recycling page says 85% of aluminum alloy used for in-house production has shifted to recycled material and 5% to green material. These are company-wide figures, not the recycled share in DiASil cylinders; the page excerpt does not state a publication year.

In a 2023 announcement, Yamaha described green aluminum as aluminum refined using renewable energy and said it complements recycled aluminum for parts that cannot be made with recycled materials. That release reported recycled aluminum at about 80% of company aluminum usage, based on raw-material use in 2022 at principal factories in Japan and overseas. The 2023 figure has a stated historical basis and scope, while the current webpage gives a later company-wide snapshot without a stated publication year; they should not be merged into a single measurement.
