The Wilman Wadandi Highway opened to traffic on 16 December 2024, ahead of the Christmas holiday period. That was the announced traffic-opening date; the official opening ceremony took place the day before, on 15 December. Formerly known as the Bunbury Outer Ring Road, the highway is now listed by the Western Australian Government as open and complete.
When did the highway open?
On 24 October 2024, the Western Australian Government announced that traffic would be able to use the Wilman Wadandi Highway from Monday, 16 December 2024. The current official project page records the opening ceremony on 15 December 2024 and lists the project as complete. These are separate milestones: the ceremony preceded the date set for opening the road to traffic.
The same 2024 announcement confirms that Wilman Wadandi Highway was the new name for the Bunbury Outer Ring Road.
Where does the route go?
The highway is 27 kilometres long and connects Forrest Highway north of Bunbury with Bussell Highway south of the city. Its northern section runs between Forrest Highway and Boyanup Picton Road; the southern section runs between South Western Highway and Bussell Highway. The project page also identifies a connection to Jules Road and a Y interchange at Bussell Highway and Centenary Road.

What benefits did the government forecast?
The government presented the expected travel and traffic effects as forecasts, not as independently verified post-opening results. Its 24 October 2024 announcement estimated that the route could save around 20 minutes, depending on traffic conditions, and divert an average of around 15,000 vehicles a day from local Bunbury roads. It said the road would separate freight and tourist traffic from local traffic.
The sources cited here establish the official estimates and the highway’s completion, but do not establish a current independent evaluation of realized travel-time savings or traffic diversion.
