What it has shown is continued rotary-engine development: a 2023 sports-car concept that uses a rotary engine to generate electricity, a separate 2035 vision model with a rotary plug-in hybrid system, and a stated effort to address rotary emissions requirements. Those developments keep the rotary idea alive; they do not confirm a new RX sports car.
What Mazda has—and has not—confirmed about an RX-9
The name RX-9 is not established as a production model in Mazda’s official announcements about its rotary concepts or development strategy. None of those sources announces an RX-9 program or provides a production timetable, specifications, price or market availability. The Iconic SP and VISION X-COUPE are evidence of Mazda exploring rotary technology, not proof either vehicle will become an RX-9.
That distinction matters because the concepts use different powertrain approaches. The Iconic SP uses a rotary engine as an electricity generator in a rotary EV system. The VISION X-COUPE is a separate vision model for 2035, with a rotary turbo engine in a plug-in hybrid. Their published numbers describe those vehicles only.
How the Iconic SP uses a rotary engine
Mazda unveiled the MAZDA ICONIC SP compact sports-car concept at Japan Mobility Show 2023. Its two-rotor rotary engine generates electricity rather than serving as a conventional direct-drive sports-car engine. Mazda describes the vehicle as a rotary EV system and says its battery can be charged using renewable energy sources. The company also says the rotary can burn different fuels, including hydrogen. Mazda’s 2023 Iconic SP announcement gives the concept’s published figures:

- Maximum output: 370 PS.
- Weight: 1,450 kg.
- Power-to-weight ratio: 3.9.
Mazda also describes approximately 50:50 weight distribution and a low center of gravity as design aims. These are Iconic SP concept details, not RX-9 specifications or confirmation of a production car.
How the VISION X-COUPE takes a different route
In October 2025, Mazda introduced the MAZDA VISION X-COUPE as a vision model for 2035. Unlike the Iconic SP’s rotary-generator arrangement, this vehicle pairs a two-rotor rotary turbo engine with a motor and battery in a plug-in hybrid system. Mazda lists 510 PS maximum output, a 160 km motor-only range and up to 800 km when operating with the engine. Those figures belong to the VISION X-COUPE; they are not estimates for an RX-9.

Mazda also describes the VISION X-COUPE as using carbon-neutral fuel derived from microalgae and its Mazda Mobile Carbon Capture technology. The company’s announcement presents it as a vision model, not a production RX-9 announcement. Mazda’s VISION X-COUPE release details the concept and its stated powertrain.
How the two concepts compare
| Vehicle | Status | Rotary engine’s role | Published figures |
|---|---|---|---|
| MAZDA ICONIC SP | Compact sports-car concept unveiled in 2023 | Two-rotor rotary engine generates electricity in a rotary EV system | 370 PS maximum output; 1,450 kg; power-to-weight ratio of 3.9 |
| MAZDA VISION X-COUPE | Vision model for 2035, introduced in 2025 | Two-rotor rotary turbo engine works with a motor and battery in a plug-in hybrid system | 510 PS maximum output; 160 km motor-only range; up to 800 km with the engine |
| RX-9 | No production model confirmed in the cited official announcements | Not stated | No RX-9 figures stated |
The concepts show that Mazda is considering more than one way to use a rotary engine in future-oriented vehicles. They are not two versions of the same car, and Mazda has not said that either powertrain will be used in an RX-9.

Why Mazda’s rotary history makes the concepts significant
Mazda’s rotary story stretches back to the Cosmo Sport (Mazda 110S), introduced in 1967 as the company’s first rotary-powered vehicle. Its rotary lineup later included the RX-7 and RX-8; RX-8 production ended in June 2012. Mazda says it resumed rotary-vehicle production in June 2023 with the MX-30 e-SKYACTIV R-EV, in which the rotary engine serves as a generator.
In October 2023, Mazda said cumulative production of its rotary-engine vehicles had surpassed two million. The company says the total is based on its in-house calculations. That milestone and the newer concepts show why Mazda continues to treat the rotary as part of its engineering identity, even as its role changes. In the Iconic SP and MX-30 e-SKYACTIV R-EV, the engine’s function is electricity generation rather than the familiar sports-car application.

At the Iconic SP unveiling, Mazda President and CEO Masahiro Moro said, “Mazda will always deliver vehicles that remind people that cars are pure joy and an indispensable part of their lives.” In Mazda’s two-million-production announcement, Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer Takeshi Mukai called the rotary engine “a special part of Mazda history” and said it represents the company’s “never-stop challenging spirit.” These statements express Mazda’s ambitions and view of its heritage; they are not commitments to build an RX-9. Mazda’s rotary production announcement includes the company’s history and production milestone.

Rotary heritage alone does not resolve the engineering and regulatory question of whether Mazda can bring a new rotary-powered sports car to market. In its 2025 Multi-Solution Briefing, Mazda said combustion-improvement technologies accumulated before and during SKYACTIV-Z development would serve as a roadmap for meeting strict emissions regulations for rotary engines. The briefing identifies emissions compliance as a continuing development challenge, but does not specify a production rotary sports-car program, engine configuration, target market or launch date. Mazda’s 2025 Multi-Solution Briefing sets out that strategy.

Accordingly, the strongest evidence-based conclusion is limited but meaningful: Mazda is still exploring rotary technology and says it is working on emissions-related development. Its concepts show possible roles for the engine, not a confirmed path to an RX-9.
