Will Car Price Hikes Undercut India’s GST 2.0 Sales Boom?

India’s vehicle retail growth remains strong in reported H1 FY27 figures, but dealers warn that car price increases could erode GST 2.0’s affordability gains. The effect on future demand is still unknown.

Car price increases have not been shown to erase the affordability gains from India’s GST 2.0 reform, and the available retail figures do not show a sales downturn. But dealers warn that further price rises could weaken demand if they eat into the tax benefit. How much they will affect future sales is not yet established.

What changed under GST 2.0?

India’s GST 2.0 regime took effect on 22 September 2025. Most auto segments were reported to move from 28% GST to 18%. SUVs longer than four metres moved to 40%, excluding cess, from a reported earlier range of 43% to 50%. The change was not a uniform tax cut for every vehicle category. Mint’s report on dealer concerns covers the tax change and subsequent price increases; The New Indian Express also reports on FADA’s assessment of retail growth after the reform.

The GST cut lowered the tax burden for the affected categories, supporting lower vehicle prices and stronger affordability. Later manufacturer price increases are a separate change: they can raise the amount buyers pay, but that does not by itself establish that the tax benefit has disappeared.

Are cars getting more expensive after the GST cut?

Yes. Mint’s 6 October 2026 report identifies price increases during 2026 by Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Mahindra & Mahindra. The companies’ increases took place on different schedules and were not reported as one uniform industry-wide hike.

The report links the increases to cost pressures. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles managing director Shailesh Chandra told The Economic Times: “Automakers have only partially passed on the increase in commodity costs to buyers.” That is his explanation of the pricing environment, not proof that every company faced the same costs or raised prices by the same amount. The Economic Times report also carries his view on affordability.

What do the sales figures show?

FADA figures reported by Mint show strong vehicle retail growth in the first half of FY27. These are retail figures, not automaker wholesale dispatches.

Vehicle category H1 FY27 retail units Year-on-year change
All vehicles 15.51 million +20.77%
Passenger vehicles 2.54 million +24.48%
Two-wheelers 11.04 million +20.43%
Commercial vehicles 585,217 +21.48%

These figures describe observed retail registrations during H1 FY27; they do not show what caused the growth or predict how sales will respond to subsequent price changes. In a separate comparison of periods, The New Indian Express reported FADA’s retrospective that auto retail grew nearly 20% in the eleven months from October 2025 to August 2026, compared with less than 5% in the comparable prior period. That eleven-month measure should not be conflated with Mint’s H1 FY27 figures.

Why are dealers concerned about affordability?

FADA says affordability is central to sustaining demand. Its president, Sai Giridhar, told Mint: “The silver lining out here is that, apart from the price hikes, there are consumer offer schemes. Because in the last year, when there were price reductions, the consumer offers were practically eroded,”

FADA’s 6 October note, quoted by Mint, framed the challenge this way: “Protecting the GST gain is, to our mind, the key to converting the festive season into durable growth.” The concern is that price rises could narrow the benefit buyers feel from the reform, especially if offers do not offset the higher prices.

Why does Tata Motors say affordability has held up?

Chandra offered a counterpoint to the dealer warning. He told The Economic Times that car prices had risen about 3% over the prior year and that cumulative increases by individual carmakers remained below 5%. Those are his assessment and figures, not an independent measure covering every vehicle or manufacturer. He also said: “Customers’ ability to buy cars has gone up (since GST 2.0 tax reforms in September 2025),”

The Economic Times reported government data showing gross national disposable income increased 9.1% in FY26, following increases of 10.2% in FY25 and 10.9% in FY24. Chandra’s argument is that rising incomes have helped buyers absorb price increases while retaining some of the affordability improvement associated with the GST changes. Income growth at the national level, however, does not establish that every household or vehicle buyer experienced the same change in purchasing power.

Does the warning mean sales are about to fall?

No. The reported evidence establishes a risk to affordability, not a confirmed sales decline caused by the price increases. FADA president Sai Giridhar said that price hikes and possible Reserve Bank of India rate hikes would shape the outlook. The size of any resulting demand effect has not been quantified in the cited reporting.

Mint also reported that 75.57% of dealers surveyed expected growth in October 2026, while 19.46% expected a flat market and 4.98% expected contraction, according to FADA’s 6 October note. Those are dealer expectations, not October’s final results. Giridhar separately told The Economic Times that GST 2.0 “did not merely pull demand forward; it widened the market itself.” That is FADA’s view of the reform’s effect, rather than a guarantee that growth will continue at the same pace.
