They could make some cars less affordable, but there is no evidence that every model has risen by the same amount—or that India’s 2026 festive-season sales will necessarily weaken. Automakers have raised prices at different times and by different amounts; discounts, dealer inventory, financing and new launches may still support buying. For shoppers, the useful comparison is a written on-road quote for the exact variant, not a headline price hike or an advertised offer.
Why price hikes matter this festive season
India’s 2025 GST rate reductions gave festive car buying a strong tailwind. The Economic Times reported that passenger-vehicle sales during the previous festive season approached half a million. In 2026, manufacturers are again looking to build demand with launches, discounts and stocked dealer yards, but higher prices may narrow the benefit buyers feel from earlier tax cuts.

Vikesh Gulati, an automotive dealer quoted by The Economic Times on October 11, 2026, warned: “Price hikes before Navratri can be a dampener. They could lead to customer setbacks and delays in purchases,” The Economic Times’ report describes a risk, not evidence that buyers have already stopped purchasing. If a new-car quote no longer fits a budget, some shoppers may choose a cheaper variant, consider a used car or delay their purchase.
The GST reduction and later price increases are not automatically equal or directly comparable: they can differ by manufacturer, vehicle class, model and variant. Tata Motors, for example, said in September 2025 that it would pass on the full GST reduction benefit effective September 22, with maximum reductions varying across its range. Those historical maximums were not a current quote or a guarantee that every buyer received the listed amount; Tata advised customers to confirm variant pricing with a dealer. Tata Motors’ announcement listed maximum reductions of ₹75,000 for Tiago, ₹80,000 for Tigor, ₹1,10,000 for Altroz, ₹85,000 for Punch, ₹1,55,000 for Nexon, ₹65,000 for Curvv, ₹1,40,000 for Harrier and ₹1,45,000 for Safari.

How much have car prices increased in 2026?
Mint’s October 2026 reporting describes several rounds of manufacturer price changes. These reported figures are ceilings, averages or weighted averages for specified announcements—not a uniform increase on every model or variant.

For BMW Group India’s July change, President and CEO Hardeep Singh Brar cited rupee depreciation and rising logistics costs. He said: “To protect our premium standards against macroeconomic headwinds – specifically rupee depreciation and escalating logistics costs – we are introducing a price increase of up to 2% across our portfolio, effective 1 July 2026.” This is BMW’s explanation of its own increase, not evidence about every manufacturer’s cost base. What manufacturers say is driving increases
In September reporting, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles chief executive Shailesh Chandra said the company had passed through only part of its cost increases: “The price increase has not been to the extent of the reduction that we have seen on the GST side.” Mint also reported pressure from supply-chain and logistics costs, alongside increases in aluminium, platinum-group metals and steel amid West Asia-related disruption. These are company and news-report accounts of cost pressures, not independent proof that every listed input affected each automaker equally.

Maruti Suzuki said on September 7 that it was passing on part of increased costs while trying to limit the impact on customers. The manufacturer-by-manufacturer price changes matter more to a buyer than a single industry-wide percentage: check whether the particular trim you want changed, and when.

Do the market figures show that demand is weakening?
No. The available figures point to strong retail growth in the first half of FY27, while industry voices warn that affordability could become a constraint. Mint, reporting Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) data, said total vehicle retail grew 20.77% year on year to 15.51 million units in that half; passenger-vehicle retail grew 24.48% to 2.54 million units. These are first-half retail figures, not a measure or forecast of festive-season sales.
For historical context, FADA recorded 23% year-on-year growth in passenger-vehicle retail during the 42-day festive period in 2025. That result is not a 2026 forecast. Similarly, The Economic Times’ reference to nearly half a million passenger vehicles concerns the previous festive season, not current-year sales.

FADA president Sai Giridhar warned in Mint that price increases risk eroding affordability after GST 2.0, while also pointing to consumer offers as a silver lining. FADA’s October note described affordability as a key support for the current cycle. Those are industry perspectives, not a measured count of buyers who have deferred or cancelled purchases.
Why dealer stock and discounts cut both ways
Full dealer yards can help retailers meet a demand surge, and discounts—reported to have edged up for SUVs amid competition—may reduce the effective transaction price. But inventory that does not sell ties up dealer working capital. If retail sales fail to keep pace, that stock could add pressure to discount; it does not guarantee a particular offer or a future price cut.

Can new launches and offers offset the hikes?
They may help, but neither guarantees that a buyer’s final cost will fall. Honda Cars India announced an updated Elevate on October 6, 2026, with refreshed equipment and a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed CVT. Honda president and CEO Toshiyuki Yanagisawa described it as one of six launches planned for the financial year and said the company expected it to support festive momentum. That is Honda’s expectation, not evidence that the launch has already increased sales. Honda’s announcement provides the launch details.
A discount should be judged against the actual quote, its conditions and the vehicle being offered. A finance-linked offer, exchange benefit or loyalty incentive may not apply to every buyer or combine with other offers. Compare the value you qualify for against the new price and the full cost of buying and financing.
How to decide whether to buy now or wait
There is no single best timing rule for every buyer. Compare the complete deal for the car you would actually accept, then decide whether its cost and delivery terms fit your budget. Use this checklist with each dealer:

- Match the vehicle exactly. Record model year, trim, engine and transmission so competing quotes refer to the same car.
- Get an itemized on-road quote in writing. Ask for the price, taxes and fees, insurance, and each cash, exchange, loyalty or finance-linked offer. Confirm the expiry date and conditions of every offer.
- Check delivery and vehicle details. Ask when the vehicle can be delivered and confirm its model year and manufacture date where relevant.
- Compare total borrowing cost, not just EMI. Write down the down-payment, interest rate, fees, tenure and any balloon payment or buyback terms. A lower monthly payment can still mean a higher total loan cost.
- Include ownership costs. Do not judge affordability from the ex-showroom price alone; consider the costs of owning the car as well.
- Set a limit before accepting an offer. If the quote does not fit, compare a lower variant, a used car or waiting against your needs and budget. None is guaranteed to save money in every case.
An individual on-road quote can differ from a reported ex-showroom increase because variant, location, fees, tax, insurance, offers and delivery timing affect what a buyer pays. The checklist is for comparing offers, not personalized financial advice.
