If your Jeep seems to be using gas faster than usual, first confirm the change with full-tank mileage records. Then check tire pressure against the driver-side door placard and respond promptly to any warning lights. A fuel gauge or remaining-range estimate alone cannot tell you whether there is a mechanical problem.
How to tell whether fuel use has really increased
At each fill-up, record the odometer reading and the amount of fuel added. Compare distance traveled with fuel used over several tanks, using consistent units and, where possible, similar routes and conditions. One fill-up can be misleading if the tank was not filled to the same level or your driving changed.
Consider whether the change began suddenly or gradually and whether your route, idling, vehicle load, or modifications have changed. A dashboard range figure is an estimate, not a diagnosis. There is no single normal-MPG target that applies to every Jeep model, engine, and driving situation.
Check tire pressure using your Jeep’s placard
Underinflated tires can increase rolling resistance and fuel consumption. Jeep’s 2023 Compass owner’s manual recommends checking pressure with a good-quality gauge at least monthly; the tire’s appearance and the tire-pressure monitoring system are not substitutes for a gauge check.

- Find the pressure placard on the driver-side B-pillar or the rear edge of the driver-side door.
- Check each tire when it is cold: the Jeep should have been parked for at least three hours, or driven less than one mile after that rest.
- Use the pressure specified on your Jeep’s placard. Do not transfer pressure figures from another Jeep’s manual or use the maximum pressure printed on the tire sidewall as the target.
Temperature changes affect tire pressure, so check it regularly and follow the placard for your vehicle. The 2023 Compass manual’s pressure figures apply to that vehicle, not every Jeep.
What to do if a warning light is on
The malfunction indicator light (MIL), often called the check-engine light, is part of the vehicle’s OBD II system. The 2024 Wrangler owner’s manual says to have the vehicle serviced if the light stays on through several typical driving styles. It also warns that prolonged driving with the MIL on could affect fuel economy and drivability.

If the MIL flashes while the engine is running, that manual warns of a serious condition and calls for immediate service. Do not treat a flashing light as merely an economy problem. Guidance can vary by model and year, so consult the owner’s manual for your Jeep.

If full-tank records show a substantial, persistent decline and tire pressure or changed driving conditions do not explain it, arrange an inspection with a qualified mechanic or Jeep dealer. A technician can check diagnostic codes and investigate the vehicle rather than replacing parts based on guesswork. The information available here does not establish a specific fault in your Jeep.
