It is a weaker choice if you prefer physical controls, rely on Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, care most about cabin finish or ride comfort, or do not have convenient charging. Everything below applies to the 2023 model year. Current Model Y specifications, prices and trims differ and should not be carried back to this vehicle.
Reasons to buy the 2023 Model Y
Range and acceleration
Edmunds lists plenty of range and strong acceleration among the Model Y’s strengths. Its 2023 review page gives 279 miles for the base configuration it describes. Car and Driver’s 2023 model-year listing gives a range span of 279 to 330 miles across the lineup and distinguishes the Long Range and Performance trims. The number you should quote depends on the trim and wheel configuration, so identify both before comparing estimates.

These are EPA-style estimates. They do not guarantee the range you will see on your own trips, which depends on speed, temperature, load and how you drive.
Passenger and cargo space
Reviewers describe the Model Y as roomy, and Edmunds lists its seating and cargo space among the pros. An optional third row appeals to some families. The sources do not establish that it can replace a full-size three-row SUV, so measure the second- and third-row space against your own car seats and luggage before deciding.

Supercharger network
Edmunds lists the Supercharger network as an advantage for long-distance driving. For a 2023 Model Y, that network is the main reason many buyers would choose it over other electric crossovers, provided their routes pass through well-served corridors.
Crash-test recognition
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety lists the 2023 Model Y as a Top Safety Pick+. The award considers crashworthiness, headlights, and daytime and nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian crash-prevention ratings. IIHS also notes that larger, heavier vehicles generally afford more protection than smaller, lighter ones, so read the award within its size class rather than as a ranking across all vehicles.

The trim caveat matters. IIHS’s detailed 2023 Model Y AWD page describes a standard-range AWD test vehicle and states that those ratings do not apply to Long Range AWD or Performance trims. For the tested variant, IIHS reports Good ratings in the listed crashworthiness categories and Superior results for pedestrian front crash prevention.
Reasons to hesitate
Touchscreen controls and phone integration
Edmunds identifies the touchscreen-focused interface as a possible distraction and notes that the 2023 Model Y lacks Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. If you want physical buttons for climate or other frequent functions, or you depend on those phone platforms for navigation and messaging, this is the first thing to test.

Cabin finish and ride
Edmunds calls the interior materials lackluster. Car and Driver describes them as low quality, says the ride is rough over road imperfections, and finds the taller SUV body less satisfying on twisty roads than the Model 3. These are reviewer judgments, not measurements. Drive the specific trim on roads you know, including a rough surface and a winding one, before deciding.
Driver assistance is not self-driving
The Associated Press reported that a December 2023 recall followed a two-year National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation into crashes involving Autopilot. The agency found that the attention-monitoring method could be inadequate and could lead to “foreseeable misuse of the system.” That finding concerns Autopilot’s monitoring method. Whatever driver-assistance features a car has, the driver remains responsible for steering, braking and attention at all times.

Charging at home or work, and installation cost
Edmunds says EV ownership works best when 240-volt charging is available at home or at work. Without that, routine charging can take longer than refueling a gasoline car, and the Supercharger advantage matters less for everyday driving. A home installation can add cost, and the amount depends on electrical-panel work, permits and other features of the property. Get a written quote from a licensed electrician before assuming the setup is affordable.

Edmunds also gives the 2023 Model Y an 8.1 out of 10 in its expert review. That score reflects Edmunds’ own assessment of the vehicle overall. It is not an objective measurement and it is not a safety rating.
How to compare it with rivals
Car and Driver names the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Volkswagen ID.4 as rivals and describes the Model Y’s range as competitive among them. That is not a matched-trim comparison, and the sources do not establish a winner across alternatives. Compare on the same terms:
- Trim and range estimate, using the same battery and wheel configuration on each vehicle
- Charging access on your routine routes, including home or workplace 240-volt availability
- Usable passenger and cargo space for the people and gear you actually carry
- Ride comfort and handling on roads you drive every day
- Interface preferences and smartphone integration, including whether you need CarPlay or Android Auto
- Safety-rating scope, meaning which trims and size class a rating covers
- Total purchase and ownership cost, including charging installation
If you are shopping for a used 2023 Model Y
- Run the vehicle identification number (VIN) through a recall lookup and confirm that the December 2023 Autopilot-related recall was completed. A dealer or the manufacturer can confirm completion on a specific VIN.
- Confirm the trim, drivetrain and wheel configuration from the VIN or the window sticker, since range and safety ratings depend on them.
- Check the remaining warranty coverage and any open recalls or service records.
- Compare current local listings for the same trim, mileage and condition. Do not use the original MSRP as the asking price.
- Test drive the exact car on familiar roads, and sit in both rows and test the cargo area with your own loads.
- Before signing, verify that your home or workplace charging setup works for the vehicle and that you have a written installation quote if you need one.
The 2023 Model Y fits drivers whose priorities match its strengths: performance, space, and the Supercharger network, with reliable charging at home or work. Drivers who want tactile controls, phone-platform integration, refined materials or a soft ride should test it against the alternatives before committing.
