If motorcycles make you angry, the feeling may come from a specific source: loud exhaust, a rider’s behavior you have witnessed, or the stress of sharing road space with a vehicle that can be harder to see. Those experiences are worth taking seriously. They do not establish that every motorcyclist behaves the same way.
What might be driving the frustration?
“I hate people who ride motorcycles” can express several different complaints. Separating them helps distinguish a concrete problem from a broad judgment about a group.
- Noise: A motorcycle that is unusually loud or repeatedly disturbs a neighborhood can make residents resent the riders they associate with it.
- Observed behavior: A close pass, speeding, or another risky maneuver can leave a lasting impression, even though one rider’s conduct cannot stand in for all riders.
- Road stress: Drivers may feel that cars and motorcycles are competing for limited space, or worry about a motorcycle’s safety when it is difficult to judge its position.
Why do some people see motorcyclists as dangerous?
A UK qualitative study published in 2012 found that participants often perceived motorcyclists as being at high risk of crashes. They mentioned perceived thrill-seeking, speed, road behavior and riders’ vulnerability. The researchers also reported an important distinction: participants did not necessarily consider every rider risky. These focus groups took place at four UK locations, so their findings describe themes in those discussions, not the views of all drivers or the public. Read the 2012 study.
A historical figure sometimes used to illustrate safety concerns needs similar care. The 2012 article reported that a 2005 UK Office for National Statistics Omnibus Survey found 70% of the public rated motorcycles the least safe mode of transport; it attributed that figure to the Department for Transport in 2008. It is a secondhand report about a survey from 2005, not a current measure of public opinion.

Why can road interactions feel competitive?
The same UK study described perceived competition for road space and a lack of mutual awareness or consideration between car drivers and motorcyclists. That friction can reinforce itself: a driver who expects a motorcycle to behave unpredictably may watch it with suspicion, while a rider who feels overlooked may experience the driver as inattentive.
A separate 2008 UK survey compared car drivers with an experienced group who both drove and rode motorcycles. Its analysis identified factors including negative attitudes, empathy, awareness of perceptual problems and spatial understanding. It does not provide a current estimate of how many people dislike riders, but it suggests that direct experience riding can affect how people understand road interactions. Read the 2008 survey study.

Can motorcycle noise be part of the problem?
Yes, for some people. A 2020 cross-sectional study in the Austrian Alps examined motorcycle-noise annoyance among local residents. It found associations between annoyance, negative attitudes toward riders and sensitivity to noise. The study used a regional telephone survey of 545 participants; that sample size describes the study, not the wider population. Its findings make noise a plausible contributor to resentment in that region, not a universal explanation for dislike of motorcyclists. Read the 2020 study.
What U.S. crash data do—and don’t—say
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 6,228 motorcyclists died in U.S. traffic crashes in 2024, representing 16% of U.S. traffic fatalities. That is a serious safety outcome, but it says nothing by itself about the character or intent of an individual rider. NHTSA advises drivers to account for motorcycles’ smaller size and visibility challenges and to share the road attentively. See NHTSA’s motorcycle safety guidance.

In a May 5, 2025 release, NHTSA reported 31.39 motorcyclist fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled in 2023, compared with 1.13 for passenger-car occupants. These are U.S. rates for different vehicle groups; they describe fatality risk, not individual fault or rider intent. The agency’s chief counsel, Peter Simshauser, urged both riders and drivers to pay attention to their habits and to each other. Read the May 2025 release.

Try naming the particular thing that is upsetting you: a noise disturbance, a specific unsafe maneuver, or anxiety about sharing the road. Then focus your judgment and any response on that issue. A real incident or recurring nuisance matters; it still does not tell you how every person who rides a motorcycle behaves.
