The main reason you can’t buy a new Suzuki Jimny in the United States is that the version sold in other markets is not certified for U.S. import. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said a seized 2022 Mexican-market Jimny did not meet federal vehicle-safety requirements or EPA emissions standards. Suzuki also stopped distributing cars in the continental U.S. in 2012, so the issue is bigger than a Jimny-only decision.
Why can’t you buy a new Jimny in the U.S.?
There are two established barriers: the overseas Jimny does not have U.S. certification, and Suzuki no longer distributes passenger cars in the continental United States. CBP’s enforcement release concerned one specific vehicle—a 2022 Jimny intended for the Mexican market—and said it failed U.S. Department of Transportation safety requirements and EPA emissions standards. That finding does not prove that every Jimny version would fail every U.S. test; it does establish that a vehicle being sold legally in another country is not automatically eligible for import here.

Federal law generally bars importing a covered motor vehicle unless it meets applicable federal motor vehicle safety standards and is covered by certification. The rule and its exceptions appear in 49 U.S.C. §30112. EPA emissions requirements are a separate part of the compliance picture; the safety statute alone does not resolve them.

Suzuki’s 2013 annual report says American Suzuki Motor Corporation resolved to commence Chapter 11 reorganization on November 5, 2012, local time. Suzuki said automobile distribution in the continental U.S. was discontinued as a result. From April 1, 2013, the new U.S. business focused on motorcycles, ATVs and outboard motors, while automobile parts and service continued.

That history explains why the absence is not simply a decision about one small off-roader: Suzuki had already stopped distributing cars in the U.S. But the available sources do not establish Suzuki’s current internal reason for not developing and certifying a U.S.-market Jimny. They do not show that a particular crash test, emissions rule, price, demand estimate or import tariff is the sole explanation.
Jimny versions differ by market
“Jimny” does not identify one identical vehicle worldwide. In its July 5, 2018 announcement, Suzuki distinguished Japan’s 0.66-litre turbo minicar from the 1.5-litre compact-car version sold overseas as the Jimny and called Jimny Sierra in Japan. Suzuki’s global product page describes the overseas 1.5-litre version and notes that specifications vary by market. A U.S. compliance answer therefore has to concern a particular model and market specification, not just the nameplate.

Can you import a Jimny once it is 25 years old?
For federal vehicle-safety law, the 25-year exception matters: §30112’s prohibition does not apply to a vehicle at least 25 years old. CBP said the 2022 Jimny in its case was ineligible because it was less than 25 years old. The exception is not a blanket guarantee that an older Jimny can be titled, registered or driven in every state, and it does not by itself settle EPA requirements or other import conditions.
Before pursuing an individual import, establish the vehicle’s manufacture date and exact national-market specification, then check applicable federal import requirements and the rules of the state where it would be registered. CBP warns that modifications needed to make a nonconforming vehicle compliant can be impractical or impossible. Its case is an enforcement example, not a complete guide to every import route.

What the evidence does—and does not—say
Suzuki’s Integrated Report 2025 lists 149,000 global FY2024 sales for the Jimny, Jimny Sierra and Jimny Nomade family. That is a worldwide figure, not U.S. demand or a forecast of American sales, and it does not explain Suzuki’s certification decision.
The supported answer is narrower than many simple explanations suggest: CBP identified both safety and emissions noncompliance for a specific imported Mexican-market Jimny, federal law generally requires compliance and certification, and Suzuki discontinued U.S. car distribution in 2012. Whether Suzuki will ever certify and sell a Jimny in America is not established by these sources.
