Yamaha’s own documentation points to packaging, weight, and torque character as the main reasons it fits the CP2 twin into bikes with very different jobs. The MT-07 naked, the XSR700 heritage roadster, the Ténéré 700 adventure bike, and the R7 sport bike all share the same basic engine concept. The shared engine does not make them interchangeable, and Yamaha’s material does not show that cost savings drove the decision.
What the CP2 engine is
CP2 is Yamaha’s name for a liquid-cooled inline parallel twin with a 270-degree crankshaft. Yamaha’s 2023 MT-07 feature page gives its displacement as 689 cc and describes the crank as the company’s Crossplane Crankshaft Concept. In the Yamaha Motorsports wording from that page: “The two-cylinder engine features Yamaha’s Crossplane Crankshaft Concept 270-degree crank that provides linear torque development in response to the rider’s throttle input.”
The 270-degree crank is the feature Yamaha leans on most. Its uneven firing order gives the twin a distinct pulse and sound, which Yamaha’s official XSR history ties to a ride feel different from the MT-07’s. Yamaha’s Ténéré 700 development story gives the displacement as 688 cm³, a small difference from the 689 cc figure on the MT-07 page. Both are Yamaha’s own numbers for the same engine family, and the gap most likely reflects how each document rounds or labels the figure.
Why one engine fits four different bikes
Yamaha’s explanations are specific to each model, so it is more useful to look at them one at a time than to read the reuse as a single strategy.

- Model Compatibility: Fits TENERE 700 models from 2019 to 2024 for direct replacement coverage.
- Model Compatibility: Designed for MT07 motorcycles manufactured between 2014 and 2023 to match factory specs.
- Model Compatibility: Compatible with XSR700 and XSR 700 units produced from 2020 through 2023.
- Functional Purpose: Serves as a prominent engine cover protection component for the listed motorcycle models.
- Installation Scope: Intended to restore standard engine cover function on specified years without design changes.
MT-07: the baseline road bike
The MT-07 is the reference point for the family. Yamaha presents the CP2’s linear torque delivery as the main attraction for a standard road bike, where throttle response in everyday riding matters more than peak output.
XSR700: same engine, different character
Yamaha says the XSR700 was built on the MT-07 and uses the same 689 cc CP2 engine. The difference lies in the chassis and ergonomics. Yamaha describes an altered rider triangle and a handling character tuned for a heritage look and feel. The engine is the same starting point; the riding position and handling are where the XSR differs.
Ténéré 700: the adventure case
The Ténéré 700 is the best-documented example of why Yamaha chose CP2. In its Ténéré 700 technical development review (2022), Yamaha gives four reasons for the choice:
Rank #2
- Model Compatibility: Fits TENERE 700 models from 2021 to 2024 and XSR700 units from 2018 to 2024.
- Vehicle Application: Designed for MT07 motorcycles manufactured between 2015 and 2020 plus FZ07 bikes from the 2015 model year.
- Component Function: Serves as a replacement left engine stator cover and crankcase part for specified motorcycle models.
- Material Composition: Constructed from aluminum material to match the equipment specifications for the listed vehicles.
- Installation Purpose: Restores the left side engine casing function on compatible series motorcycles without altering performance.
- The engine is compact and light.
- Its output of 54 kW at 9,000 rpm was judged sufficient for the target. This is a selection-era figure from the 2022 review, not a current specification.
- It is very controllable without electronic rider aids.
- It has a torquey, responsive character.
The same review says Yamaha then worked on midrange torque and quicker, more direct revving. The changes it lists include a revised airbox, fuel injection, cooling system, exhaust, and final drive ratio. The Ténéré development story also ties the engine’s controllability and light, compact design to the off-road bike’s weight-focused development. In other words, the engine was adapted to the Ténéré rather than bolted in unchanged.

R7: packaging for sport bodywork
For the R7, Yamaha says the compact CP2 dimensions allowed designers to build slimmer bodywork. Yamaha’s 2024 R7 factsheet also calls it the first CP2-engined Yamaha to use an assist-and-slipper clutch. Here the engine’s size shapes the bike’s fairing and profile rather than its ride style.
| Model | Role Yamaha describes | CP2 detail Yamaha documents | Source and date |
|---|---|---|---|
| MT-07 | Standard road bike | 689 cc; 270-degree crank giving linear torque response | Yamaha Motorsports MT-07 feature page, 2023 |
| XSR700 | Heritage-styled road bike based on MT-07 | Same 689 cc CP2; uneven firing order; altered rider triangle and handling | Yamaha XSR series history (official) |
| Ténéré 700 | Adventure and off-road travel | 688 cm³ as stated in development story; 54 kW at 9,000 rpm cited as sufficient; revised airbox, injection, cooling, exhaust, and final ratio | Ténéré 700 technical development review, 2022; development story |
| R7 | Sport bike | Compact dimensions enabling slimmer bodywork; first CP2 Yamaha with assist-and-slipper clutch | Yamaha R7 factsheet, 2024 |
What Yamaha’s sources do not establish
The title’s word “everything” is rhetorical. The evidence here covers four models, and it does not give a complete or current list of CP2 bikes. Check Yamaha’s current range for the market and year you care about.
Rank #3

The sources also do not say that cost savings drove the reuse. Yamaha’s documents cover packaging, weight, torque, controllability, and how the engine was adapted to different bikes. They do not give a production-cost figure, and they do not name cost as a reason. Any argument that sharing the engine saves money would be the writer’s inference, not Yamaha’s stated position.
Nor do these sources cover reliability, sales, real-world fuel economy, or independent performance comparisons. They are manufacturer materials that describe design intent and stated specifications.
How to compare CP2 motorcycles
Because the engine is shared, the rest of the motorcycle carries most of the difference. When you compare models, check these points:
- Intended use. Naked road, heritage road, adventure travel, and sport riding each shape the bike around a different job.
- Ergonomics and bodywork. The XSR700’s rider triangle and the R7’s slim bodywork change how the bike feels before you ride it.
- Chassis, suspension, wheels, gearing, and equipment. The Ténéré’s engine changes and purpose-built chassis show how far Yamaha goes beyond the shared engine.
- Model year and market. Specifications, equipment, and availability vary. The figures above are tied to the years and documents named in the table.
Used together, these points explain more about the bikes than the engine alone. The CP2 gives Yamaha a common, compact, light twin with a distinct torque character. The motorcycle around it decides what that engine is for.
