The rotary engine is back in production—but not in the way fans of the Mazda RX-7 or RX-8 might expect. Mazda resumed rotary-powered vehicle production in 2023 with the MX-30 e-SKYACTIV R-EV, where a small rotary engine generates electricity and an electric motor drives the wheels. Mazda has also restarted dedicated rotary-engine development and identified emissions compliance as part of its future work. None of that confirms a new rotary sports car or a launch date.
What “the rotary is back” means
Mazda’s rotary story did not end permanently with the RX-8. RX-8 production ended in June 2012, but production of the MX-30 e-SKYACTIV R-EV began in June 2023. The important change is the engine’s job: in the R-EV, the rotary is a generator, not a conventional engine mechanically driving the wheels.

How the MX-30 rotary range extender works
Mazda describes the MX-30 e-SKYACTIV R-EV as a series plug-in hybrid. Its single-rotor 8C engine drives a generator that can charge the battery or supply additional power; the electric motor drives the vehicle. The rotary engine is therefore not connected mechanically to the wheels.

Mazda UK’s June 2023 release identifies the 8C as an 830 cc, single-rotor unit. For the UK-market R-EV described in that release, Mazda listed a 17.8 kWh battery and 53 miles of battery-electric driving range, plus a total range figure of more than 373 miles for its stated configuration. These are manufacturer-reported, market- and test-cycle-specific figures, not independent real-world measurements or specifications to assume for every market or model year. Mazda says the rotary suits this role because it can provide the required output in a compact, lightweight package. The company’s release also identifies direct fuel injection and exhaust-gas recirculation among the 8C’s design features. Mazda’s Technical Review 2023 contents page lists separate engineering papers covering the 8C’s combustion technology, structural parts, powertrain control, and production processes.

Why Mazda’s rotary history is broader than sports cars
Mazda traces its technical tie-up with NSU and Felix Wankel to July 1961 and the Cosmo Sport’s launch to May 1967. Its rotary-powered lineup later included the Familia Rotary Coupe/R100, Luce Rotary Coupe, Capella/RX-2, Savanna/RX-3, RX-4, RX-5, RX-7, and RX-8. Mazda describes the engine as generating power through the rotational movement of triangular rotors.
The company’s own timeline also records rotary applications outside the familiar coupe and sports-car category: a pickup and a bus in the 1970s, a three-rotor Eunos Cosmo in 1990, and the 787B’s 1991 Le Mans win. Those examples show the breadth of Mazda’s experimentation, not that each model had the same purpose or market reach.

Mazda reported that cumulative production of rotary-powered vehicles passed two million units in 2023, based on the company’s in-house calculations. The same timeline records Mazda production milestones of 500,000 units in 1973 and one million in 1978. These are company figures, not an independent industry tally. What Mazda has said about future rotary development
On February 1, 2024, Mazda announced that it had reinstated its RE Development Group after almost six years. The company said 36 engineers would work on evolving rotary engines for generator applications, regulatory compliance in major markets, and possible applications of carbon-neutral fuels. Mazda CTO Ichiro Hirose called the rotary “a special symbol of our ‘challenger spirit.’” The announcement describes a development program, not a retail vehicle plan. Read Mazda’s 2024 announcement.

Mazda’s October 10, 2025 Multi-Solution Briefing adds an emissions-focused signal. It says combustion-improvement technologies accumulated before and during SKYACTIV-Z development will be applied to inline-six engines and “will also serve as a roadmap for meeting the strict emission regulations for rotary engines.” Mazda presents this as a roadmap; it does not announce completed certification, a new rotary sports car, or a production launch date. Mazda has not announced a new rotary sports car or given a launch date in the statements cited here. The evidence supports a narrower conclusion: the company has resumed rotary use as a generator in a production vehicle, reinstated a team to develop the technology, and named emissions compliance as a future engineering challenge. That is meaningful continued development, but it is not confirmation that Mazda will return to a conventional rotary-powered sports car.

Nor do Mazda’s statements establish that rotary engines are inherently cleaner, more efficient, or simpler than piston engines in every application. The MX-30 R-EV shows one way the engine can be used within an electrified powertrain; broader claims require evidence beyond Mazda’s stated program.
