The R34 Skyline GT-R’s reputation rests on a short, well-defined production run and engineering that made the road car more than a badge exercise. Nissan’s tenth-generation Skyline arrived in 1998; the GT-R followed in January 1999, and Nissan announced that R34 GT-R production would end in early August 2002. The range combined a rigid body and RB26DETT power with distinct V-Spec and Nür editions—and NISMO’s Heritage Parts program still lists support for the BNR34.
What “R34 GT-R” means
R34 identifies the tenth-generation Skyline chassis. The Skyline generation began in 1998, but its GT-R performance model arrived in January 1999. Nissan’s 2000 V-Spec II heritage entry describes a more rigid body intended to improve motion performance while retaining interior space in a smaller body.
The R34 GT-R’s place in the story is unusually clear: it was the last Skyline GT-R generation before the name later returned as a standalone model. Nissan’s January 2002 release said production of the Skyline GT-R (R34) would end in early August that year. That brief 1999–2002 window is part of its appeal, though it does not establish a complete production total.
The V-Spec II: road-car engineering, not just trim
Nissan positioned the V-Spec as a performance-focused version, with dedicated aerodynamic parts, specially tuned suspension and an active limited-slip differential. For 2000, the V-Spec II added a carbon-fiber engine hood with a NACA duct and aluminum pedals. Nissan’s listed specifications show how the road car balanced power, traction and everyday packaging:

| Engine | 2,568cc RB26DETT inline-six |
| Power | 206 kW (280 PS) at 6,800 rpm |
| Torque | 392 N·m at 4,400 rpm |
| Curb weight | 1,560 kg |
| Transmission | Six-speed manual |
| Suspension | Multilink front and rear |
| Brakes | Ventilated discs |
| Tires | 245/40ZR18 |
These figures are Nissan’s specifications for the cited 2000 V-Spec II, not a summary of every R34 GT-R variant. The hood duct and chassis-focused equipment give the trim a specific character: Nissan paired a familiar GT-R powertrain with details aimed at airflow and handling, rather than relying on appearance alone.
How the V-Spec II Nür and M-Spec Nür differ
Nissan introduced the V-Spec II Nür and M-Spec Nür as limited editions in 2002. Both were built on an N1-specification engine base with weight-balanced pistons and connecting rods, and Nissan’s launch release listed a dedicated 300 km/h speedometer, a special grade emblem and Millennium Jade as a special-edition color. The editions were not identical in intended use:

| Edition | Nissan’s stated focus | Distinguishing detail |
|---|---|---|
| V-Spec II Nür | Sprint racing | Based on the V-Spec II approach; Nissan identifies its sprint-oriented purpose. |
| M-Spec Nür | Endurance racing | More compliant suspension, reflecting its endurance-oriented brief. |
Nissan does not provide a complete R34 GT-R production total or a verified split between these two Nür editions in the cited material. Their limited-edition status is documented, but exact scarcity claims should not be inferred from it.
Keep race-car specifications separate from road-car figures
A specification mix-up can make the R34 seem more extreme than the production road car actually was. Nissan’s separate 2002 JGTC race-car replica entry lists a 2,708cc engine, 460 PS, rear-wheel drive and a six-speed sequential transmission. Those are race-car details, not the specifications of the road-going V-Spec II described above. For the latter, Nissan lists a 2,568cc RB26DETT, 206 kW (280 PS) and a six-speed manual.

Why the R34 still matters to owners
The R34 is now an older performance car, but parts support has not disappeared entirely. NISMO’s May 2026 Heritage Parts announcement lists additions for BNR32, BCNR33 and BNR34, including the BNR34-compatible turbo gasket kit 14401-RHR20. NISMO also describes its Heritage Parts program as serving R32, R33 and R34 Skyline GT-Rs.
A listing is not a guarantee that a part is currently in stock or right for every car. Before ordering, confirm the chassis and exact part number with NISMO or an authorized parts source, especially if the car has modified components. This ongoing support matters because it gives owners a route to selected parts; it should not be mistaken for proof that every repair item is available.

What makes its legend endure
The strongest case is the combination: a rigid, carefully packaged road car; the RB26DETT and six-speed manual in Nissan’s documented V-Spec II specification; trims with distinct chassis and intended-use priorities; and a production chapter that closed in 2002. Continued parts reproduction adds present-day relevance for people keeping these cars on the road. “Legend among legends” is a judgment, not a measurable ranking—but these documented details explain why the R34 GT-R continues to command attention.
