The Honda Valkyrie put Gold Wing flat-six lineage in a cruiser’s shape: a combination that felt unlike a conventional touring bike or a typical cruiser. That distinct identity—not a measurable “most missed” ranking—is why it remains easy to remember.
What was the Honda Valkyrie?
Honda introduced the Valkyrie in the United States in 1997 as “a high-performance cruiser based on the GL1500 chassis,” according to Honda’s Gold Wing timeline. The GL1500 was the Gold Wing generation that Honda launched in 1988, powered by a 1,520cc horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine, as recorded in Honda’s corporate history and its Powersports history page.
That foundation explains the Valkyrie’s central contrast: cruiser styling wrapped around a platform associated with Honda’s large touring motorcycle. It was not simply a Gold Wing with different trim; the cruiser form gave the shared engineering a different visual character and riding identity.
How did it differ from the Gold Wing?
A different shape and purpose
The Gold Wing was developed as a touring motorcycle, while Honda described the Valkyrie as a high-performance cruiser. The distinction is clearest in their overall presentation: the Valkyrie’s custom-cruiser styling versus the Gold Wing’s full touring format. This is a design-level comparison, not a claim that the two models had identical equipment or specifications.

The Gold Wing generations behind the name
The original Valkyrie’s GL1500 roots sit within a broader Gold Wing progression. Honda introduced the GL1800 in 2001 with an 1,832cc engine and an aluminum frame, according to its model history. After the Valkyrie returned, Honda redesigned the Gold Wing for 2018 around an 1,833cc powerplant, also noted in that history. Those figures describe Gold Wing models; they are not a complete Valkyrie specification sheet.
When was the Valkyrie made?
Honda’s US timeline places the Valkyrie’s introduction in 1997 and says the company reintroduced it in 2014. Honda Europe, in a 2025 Gold Wing release, describes the custom-styled Valkyrie as “1996-2003.” The dates use different wording and market contexts: one is a US timeline’s introduction entry, the other a European release’s model-period label. They should not be collapsed into a single universal production range.

Honda’s reviewed histories establish a 2014 return of the Valkyrie name, but do not establish the exact final production year for every market. They also do not state why Honda ended the model. The available evidence supports the broad lineage and chronology, not a definitive account of its discontinuation.

It combined two motorcycle identities
The Valkyrie’s strongest appeal is the unusual pairing at its core: Gold Wing flat-six ancestry presented in a cruiser. Honda’s own description of the 1997 model captures the formula succinctly. Rather than asking riders to choose between a large touring-bike lineage and a cruiser’s custom styling, it made those identities coexist in one model.

It belonged to a visible engineering transition
The Valkyrie also connects distinct chapters in Gold Wing history: the GL1500’s 1,520cc six-cylinder platform, the GL1800’s arrival in 2001, and the Valkyrie name’s 2014 return. Honda’s corporate account of GL1800 development says engineer Masanori Aoki rode about 4,000 km in seven days during development. That ride belongs to the GL1800 story, not a Valkyrie test, but it illustrates the engineering ambition of the family the cruiser drew from.
Its absence is a matter of taste, not a measured verdict
Honda’s 2017 timeline called the 2014 return “the ultimate cruiser,” a promotional description rather than an independent comparison. The reviewed sources provide no sales or production total, performance comparison, or survey showing that the Valkyrie is objectively the most-missed Honda. Calling it the one we miss most is therefore an editorial judgment: a way of describing how memorable its Gold Wing-meets-cruiser character remains.
