The Cadillac CT6-V was a full-size luxury sedan with the hardware of a super-sedan and the appearance of an executive car. That mismatch made the car unusually easy to overlook. Buyers saw a large luxury sedan with a comfortable cabin and familiar CT6 proportions; enthusiasts who knew the specification saw a flagship drivetrain installed in a model whose production life was already ending.
Cadillac’s own brochure positioned the CT6-V as the performance-focused member of the CT6 range while retaining the model’s luxury isolation. It specifically described summer-only tires and a chassis centered on strength and agility, rather than presenting the car as a stripped-out track special.

What powers the CT6-V?
A hand-built 4.2-liter Blackwing V8
Cadillac rated the CT6-V’s twin-turbo Blackwing V8 at 550 hp and 640 lb-ft of torque. Those are the manufacturer’s official figures and the central reason the CT6-V matters: the sedan was not merely a cosmetic performance trim. Its engine program was the car’s identity.
Cadillac’s brochure described the range as extending “up to the all-new, hand-built 4.2L Blackwing Twin Turbo V8,” with two available outputs across the CT6 lineup. The CT6-V received the higher-output specification cited above.
Ten-speed automatic transmission
The V8 was paired with a 10-speed automatic. The transmission, engine response and chassis calibration were developed as a complete performance package, rather than as an isolated engine upgrade added to an otherwise ordinary CT6.
How rare is the Cadillac CT6-V?
The best available final tally is 915 CT6-Vs worldwide production total as reported by later production coverage: 504 cars for the 2019 model year and 411 for 2020.

That is a very small population for a full-size luxury flagship. It also explains why the car can seem absent from normal Cadillac discussions: there were not enough examples on the road for the model to become a common sight, even when new.
Why early production reports do not match the final count
Initial coverage reported that Cadillac’s first 275 CT6-V pre-order cars sold out in two hours. Cadillac Society subsequently described additional 2019 Blackwing-powered CT6 production and estimated roughly 1,500 Blackwing CT6s across the run.
Later reporting revised the total for all Blackwing-powered CT6 sedans to 1,200 cars: 915 CT6-Vs and 285 CT6 Platinum cars. The earlier estimate was published before production had finished, so the later 915-car CT6-V tally is the figure to use when discussing final production.

The CT6-V arrived at the end of the CT6’s life
On February 22, 2019, GM announced that CT6 production at Detroit-Hamtramck would continue into January 2020. The announcement specifically referenced CT6-V technology, Blackwing and Super Cruise. In practical terms, the performance flagship was being introduced while the sedan’s manufacturing future was already limited.

Cadillac discontinued the CT6 in 2020, making the CT6-V a two-model-year car. That timing reduced the opportunity for the model to build a long-term reputation, dealer familiarity or a broad enthusiast following.
What made it different from an ordinary CT6?
Engine and response
A regular CT6 could be ordered with engines below the Blackwing V8. The CT6-V’s 550-hp, 640-lb-ft output and twin-turbo response placed it in a different performance category from those versions.
Chassis focus
Cadillac’s brochure presented the CT6-V as a car in which “strength and agility” were central. The performance specification included summer-only tires and chassis-focused equipment while preserving the CT6’s isolation and comfort.

Luxury and technology
The CT6-V remained a full-size Cadillac rather than becoming a minimalist track car. Its appeal came from combining performance engineering with the space, quietness and technology expected of a flagship sedan. The available Super Cruise reference in GM’s production notice also places the car within Cadillac’s technology-led luxury strategy.

The important distinction is not simply the badge. The CT6-V combined the highest-output engine identified in Cadillac’s CT6 materials with a performance chassis brief, then placed both inside a sedan that prioritized comfort and discretion.
Why Cadillac discontinued it
The documented explanation is timing: the CT6 itself was discontinued in 2020, and GM had already described CT6 production as extending only into early 2020. The CT6-V therefore ended with the platform rather than receiving a normal multi-year development cycle.
That does not make the car an unfinished concept. It makes it a short-lived factory model whose engineering arrived just as its production base was disappearing. The 915-car final count is the result of that overlap.

What ownership means for parts and specialist service
The CT6-V’s rarity is a reason to verify support carefully, not proof that every part is unavailable. A prospective owner should distinguish between shared CT6 service items, Blackwing-specific engine and calibration components, and trim or chassis parts unique to the V.

With 915 examples reported at the end of production, the CT6-V was rare before rarity became part of its appeal. Its secret was never that Cadillac built a fast sedan; it was that Cadillac hid so much performance inside one that few people noticed before the factory shut the door.
