The car was the BMW Isetta, whose entire front section swung open to let people in. But the claim that wartime horrors caused this refrigerator-like door is not supported by BMW’s archive: the Isetta began as an Italian design, and BMW adopted it to meet a mid-1950s business need.
What was the car with the refrigerator-like door?
It was the BMW Isetta, a tiny car distinguished by a door at the front rather than conventional side doors. The front-opening design is striking, but the available BMW archive material establishes it as a feature, not why the original designers chose it. Claims that it was specifically created because of bomb damage, postwar shortages, narrow parking spaces or wartime trauma go beyond what that material documents.

Was the Isetta really German?
Not originally. BMW says the Isetta was developed by the Italian company Iso in Milan. BMW later signed a licensing agreement and re-engineered the design for its own production. That makes the BMW Isetta an Italian-origin design adapted and built by a German automaker—not a wholly German invention.
Why did BMW build it?
BMW’s corporate archive describes the mid-1950s challenge as commercial: the company needed a model that would sell well and cost little to manufacture. The archive does not identify wartime horrors as the reason for the Isetta’s door or for BMW’s decision to produce the car. It is more accurate to connect BMW’s adoption of the Isetta to that business need than to claim a direct psychological or engineering consequence of the war.

How did BMW change the Isetta?
BMW replaced Iso’s original two-stroke engine with a four-stroke engine derived from its R 25 motorcycle line. BMW says production began in spring 1955 with the Isetta 250, which had a 247 cc engine producing 12 PS. A 300 model with one additional horsepower followed later that year.
BMW Group Classic lists the Isetta 250’s production period as March 1955 to January 1957 and its top speed as 85 km/h. The Isetta series was produced from March 1955 to May 1962; BMW reports that more than 161,000 Isettas were made from 1955 through 1962.

How was the BMW 600 different?
The related BMW 600 expanded the idea into a four-seater, positioned as a bridge between the Isetta and the BMW 700. It kept a front door and added a door on the right side, so the two models should not be treated as having identical layouts.
| Model | Seats | Engine | Doors | Production |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BMW Isetta 250 | Not stated in the cited BMW archive details | 247 cc; 12 PS | Front-opening door | March 1955–January 1957 |
| BMW 600 | Four | 585 cc flat-twin; 19.5 bhp | Front door and right-side door | September 1957–November 1959 |
BMW lists the 600’s top speed as 100 km/h and reports 34,813 produced. Its archive also says that buyers increasingly wanted modern-looking small cars and that the 600’s unusual door arrangement was a drawback. That later assessment concerns the 600; it does not establish why Iso originally designed the Isetta’s front door.
