Mazda’s July 2025 North American reveal describes the launch powertrain; its 2026 pricing and packaging announcement lists five 2.5 S packages and no turbo trim in the announced launch range.
Specifications vary slightly by source and market. Mazda Canada also lists 187 hp and 185 lb-ft for its launch model, while Mazda USA’s CX-5 product page lists 187 hp and 186 lb-ft. These figures refer to the naturally aspirated engine, not a turbo. Check the specification page for the market and model year you are considering.
Why Mazda dropped the turbo
Mazda has not given a definitive public reason for omitting the turbo from the 2026 launch lineup. The official announcements reviewed do not attribute the decision to weak turbo demand, emissions rules, cost, packaging constraints, or another specific cause. Those explanations should be treated as speculation unless Mazda directly confirms them.

What Mazda says is coming in 2027
Mazda says it plans to pair a 2.5-liter SKYACTIV-Z gasoline engine with its Mazda Hybrid System in the next-generation CX-5 by the end of 2027. The engine is under development. In its 2025 Multi-Solution Briefing, Mazda presents SKYACTIV-Z and electrification as part of its broader strategy, with goals that include driving performance and meeting emissions regulations.
Mazda’s North American announcement says the hybrid combination is intended to deliver a higher level of performance and fuel efficiency alongside the engaging drive the company says customers expect. That is Mazda’s stated aim, not a published performance test or a promise that the hybrid will match the outgoing turbo’s acceleration, torque, or towing capability. Mazda has not yet provided final retail power or fuel-economy figures for the hybrid in the sources cited here.

The CX-5’s popularity does not explain the powertrain choice
Mazda reported five million cumulative CX-5 production and sales by the end of 2025, calling it the best-selling model in its current lineup. That establishes the nameplate’s importance, but Mazda did not connect the milestone to the turbo’s absence. In a January 29, 2026 company announcement, CX-5 Program Manager Koichiro Yamaguchi described the new model’s design, driving dynamics, cabin space, and redesigned human-machine interface; he did not explain the powertrain decision.
