The 2025 Ford Maverick makes a strong bargain case for buyers who want a compact pickup with hybrid fuel economy, useful everyday hauling ability and a relatively attainable starting price. It is not the cheapest choice for every job, nor does its low entry price make it a substitute for a larger truck. Its value depends on whether its size and configuration match what you need.
What makes the 2025 Maverick a bargain?
Ford announced a $26,295 starting MSRP for the 2025 front-wheel-drive (FWD) hybrid Maverick, with $1,595 for destination and delivery on top. Kelley Blue Book (KBB) reported a $28,145 starting price in its 2025 award article. Those are launch-era figures, not a quote for a specific truck: taxes, title, registration, options, dealer fees, financing and negotiated price affect what a buyer pays. They should not be treated as current new- or used-inventory prices.
The case is the combination: a compact pickup at an entry price that was comparatively accessible when announced, a standard hybrid on several trims, and a bed that can handle many ordinary cargo tasks. KBB named the Maverick its Compact Truck Best Buy of 2025; that is KBB’s editorial judgment, not a universal ranking or a calculation of lifetime ownership cost. No complete ownership-cost comparison is established here.
Ford called it the midsize pickup with “the lowest starting price” in America in its announcement. That is Ford’s manufacturer claim about the launch lineup, not independent evidence that it has the lowest transaction price in every market or remains the cheapest truck to buy today. Which 2025 Maverick powertrain fits the bargain case?
For 2025, Ford expanded hybrid availability by adding hybrid all-wheel drive (AWD). The hybrid was standard on XL, XLT and Lariat, while the 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine was standard on Lobo and Tremor and available on other trims. The Lobo emphasizes performance; the Tremor is aimed at off-road use. Confirm the powertrain and equipment on the particular trim and vehicle, since not every combination is available.
Fuel-economy estimates vary by drivetrain. Ford announced targeted city estimates of 42 mpg for the FWD hybrid and 40 mpg for the AWD hybrid. KBB reports manufacturer-estimated figures of 42 city/35 highway mpg for the FWD hybrid and 40 city/34 highway mpg for AWD, with 38 mpg combined for the hybrid. These are estimates, not a guarantee of real-world mileage; driving conditions, weather, load and other factors affect fuel use.

Ford also highlighted a 13.2-inch screen and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for 2025. Equipment can vary by trim, so check the window sticker or build details rather than assuming every Maverick includes the same features. [Ford’s 2025 announcement] [KBB’s reported fuel-economy figures]
How much can a Maverick tow and carry?
Ford’s 2025 technical specifications list 2,000 pounds of standard towing capacity and up to 4,000 pounds with the available 4K Tow Package on eligible configurations. The cited specification excludes Lobo and Tremor from the 4,000-pound figure; do not assume every trim or powertrain can reach it. The package can change the truck’s usefulness for a small trailer, but it does not turn the Maverick into a heavy-duty tow vehicle.

Payload also depends on configuration. Ford lists maximum payload figures of 1,500 pounds for the FWD hybrid and 1,400 pounds for the AWD hybrid. Those are configuration-specific maximums, not the amount available in every truck after occupants, cargo and accessories are aboard. Before loading or towing, check the exact vehicle’s door-jamb payload label and towing documentation, and account for passengers, cargo, accessories and trailer setup. What can the compact FLEXBED do—and where does it fall short?
Ford lists the bed floor at 54.4 inches long, 53.3 inches wide between the sidewalls and 42.6 inches between the wheelhouses. It is a compact bed, not equivalent to a full-size pickup bed, but its design gives owners ways to organize and secure everyday cargo.

KBB describes the 4.5-foot FLEXBED as having grooves and slots that can be adapted with lumber, along with up to 10 tie-downs. It reports that a 4-by-8-foot sheet of plywood can fit with a suitable setup. That does not mean the sheet lies flat inside the bed: plan for an appropriate support arrangement, overhang and securement. KBB also notes an available 110-volt outlet. A bed mat or organizer may help protect or arrange cargo, but check that an accessory listing fits the exact model year and bed configuration before buying. The 2025 Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz suit overlapping but distinct priorities. In an Edmunds comparison carried by the Associated Press (AP), the Maverick’s advantages included hybrid efficiency and a reported 1,500-pound payload, versus 1,411 pounds for the Santa Cruz. The Santa Cruz’s turbo model was rated to tow up to 5,000 pounds, compared with the Maverick’s 4,000-pound maximum when properly equipped. That is a comparison of stated capabilities, not a claim that every Maverick can tow 4,000 pounds.

The same report describes the Santa Cruz cabin as classier and more comfortable. The choice is therefore not just about sticker price: consider whether hybrid efficiency and conventional pickup utility matter more to you than cabin refinement or the Hyundai turbo model’s higher maximum tow rating. Edmunds’ Dan Frio, in the AP-carried comparison, put the distinction this way: “Get the Maverick if you need typical truck muscle or excellent fuel economy. Get the Santa Cruz if you want classier crossover comfort or need to tow heavier loads.” [AP/Edmunds compact-pickup comparison]
What compromises should a buyer expect?
The Maverick’s price and compact dimensions come with practical trade-offs. Car and Driver notes a stiff ride, a basic base model, tight rear legroom and less cargo capacity than larger pickups. Its smaller footprint can make it easier to maneuver, and the hybrid offers an efficiency advantage, but neither removes those space and comfort compromises.
- Choose the Maverick if: you want a compact pickup, value hybrid efficiency, and can work within its bed, payload and configuration-specific towing limits.
- Consider the Santa Cruz if: cabin comfort, a more refined interior or the turbo model’s higher maximum towing rating is more important to you.
- Look at a larger pickup if: your regular work exceeds the Maverick’s payload, bed or towing limits. The available information here does not establish a full price comparison with the Ranger or full-size trucks.
KBB reviewer Colin Ryan described the Maverick as feeling “as easy, agreeable, and comfortable to drive as a small SUV.” That is his assessment, not a guarantee that every driver will find the ride comfortable—especially given the ride and rear-seat compromises noted by Car and Driver. [Car and Driver’s 2025 review] [KBB’s award article]
Is the 2025 Maverick the best bargain truck for you?
It is a compelling bargain for a buyer whose priorities are a compact footprint, hybrid availability and useful light-duty pickup capacity at a relatively attainable launch price. It is not automatically the best value for someone who needs maximum towing, a larger bed, more rear-seat space or a more refined cabin. Compare the price and equipment of the actual trucks available to you, then verify the exact vehicle’s payload and tow ratings before deciding.
