It is not the most specialized Gladiator for technical rock crawling, and reviewers report real compromises on the road. The 2024 model year is now a previous one, so the figures below come from launch-era announcements and 2024 reviews. Confirm the configuration of any specific truck before you rely on a number.
What the Mojave is built to do
Jeep’s 2023 announcement for the 2024 model year calls the Mojave a “proven high-speed desert runner.” The truck’s identity comes from a small set of hardware choices aimed at speed over loose surfaces rather than from a general off-road package. Its key components, as listed by Jeep, are a Command-Trac part-time transfer case with 2.72:1 low range, Dana 44 axles with a 4.10 ratio, a Tru-Lok rear axle, 17-inch wheels wearing 33-inch all-terrain tires, and a one-inch front suspension lift.
Jeep ties the badge to the suspension. The official model-year statement reads: “To earn its Desert Rated badge, the Gladiator Mojave features specially tuned high-performance FOX 2.5-inch internal bypass shocks to optimize handling, ride comfort and bottom-out resistance on high-speed sand runs.” That sentence is Jeep’s own explanation of the design goal, not an independent test result.
Why the suspension feels different
FOX 2.5-inch internal-bypass shocks
The Mojave uses FOX 2.5-inch internal-bypass shocks with external reservoirs. Jeep says they are tuned for handling, ride comfort and resistance to bottoming out when the truck is running fast over sand. Cars.com’s reviewer, who drove the truck on washboard and pockmarked roads near Detroit at elevated speeds, described the suspension as keeping the truck planted, stable and true. That is a driver’s impression of one route, and it is the most useful way to read it.

FOX front hydraulic jounce bumpers
Front hydraulic jounce bumpers, also from FOX, are the second part of the setup. They are meant to control the front end when the axle travels through its upper range, which is where a fast truck on uneven ground gets its hardest hits. Jeep lists them as standard Mojave equipment; the reviews we cite do not separately measure their effect.
Lift, axles and tires
The one-inch front lift, the 33-inch tires and the 4.10 axle ratio are the parts that change the truck’s stance and gearing. The lift gives the tires room to work, and the taller tires plus the lower ratio are a reasonable match for the low-speed trail work Jeep emphasizes. The trade-off is that a larger tire and a lifted front end change the truck’s road feel, which is covered below.
Off-Road+ modes and what they change
Off-Road+ adjusts throttle response, transmission shift points and traction control. Jeep describes two use cases:
- High-speed mode for sand, aimed at keeping momentum over loose surfaces.
- Low-speed mode for rock crawling, tuned for controlled movement at slow speed.
The Mojave’s rear-locker mode is part of the high-speed setup in Jeep’s description. Jeep’s own material is the source for how the modes are meant to work; the reviews we cite do not separately benchmark each mode.

Where the Mojave stays capable
Cars.com’s reviewer drove the truck on a muddy low-speed course at the 2024 Midwest Automotive Media Association Spring Rally and called it capable, even without a front locker. The Gladiator’s longer wheelbase, compared with a Wrangler, is credited in the same review with a better ride quality. Road & Track’s 2024 Mojave drive review also describes the suspension as handling potholes and expansion joints on a New York City drive, while noting that the reviewer did not drive the truck aggressively in its natural desert environment.
The useful reading is that the Mojave is a fast-dirt truck that can handle trail work, not a rock-first vehicle that happens to have a desert badge.
Where the Mojave gives up ground
Each review we cite points to the same set of compromises, and they matter if you drive mostly on pavement.
Road noise and surface imperfections
Cars.com says the cabin remains noisy and that surface imperfections are still noticeable. Road & Track describes the road manners as loose and says holding a straight line at highway speed takes focus.

Highway steering
Cars.com attributes the need for steering corrections on the highway to the Gladiator’s live axles and upright body. This is a characteristic of the platform, which the Mojave shares with other Gladiators, and the review ties it to the truck’s shape and axle design.
Fast bumps and rock limits
MotorTrend’s first test of the Mojave X reports that the front live axle and suspension reach their limit on high-speed bumps sooner than the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison in its assessment. The same review says the Mojave still crawls over rocks but is held back by the lack of a front locking differential and a disconnecting front anti-roll bar. Those observations are about the Mojave X, the trim MotorTrend tested, so treat them as a trim-level finding.
Mojave versus Rubicon: pick by terrain
MotorTrend frames the choice this way. The Rubicon is tailored to hard rock trails, while the Mojave is set up to hold speed in dirt and absorb harder hits. Rock-first buyers should look at the Rubicon’s rock-oriented equipment. Buyers who spend their trail time on fast, loose surfaces will find the Mojave’s setup more purpose-built.
Towing and payload: read the numbers for your truck
Jeep’s 2023 announcement lists lineup-wide maximums for the 2024 Gladiator of 7,700 pounds of towing and 1,725 pounds of payload. These are maximums across the lineup, not guaranteed ratings for every Mojave. Car and Driver’s 2024 Gladiator review states that reaching 7,700 pounds requires the optional Max Tow package.

Before you assume a Mojave can tow or carry a given load, check the following on the specific truck:
- The option list on the window sticker, for Max Tow and any other tow-related package.
- The towing and payload figures in the owner’s manual or the certification label for that vehicle’s configuration.
- The trailer hitch class and wiring installed on the truck, since those determine what it can safely pull.
Fuel economy: one test, one number
Car and Driver’s 2024 Mojave test recorded 15 mpg on its 75-mph highway run. That is one publication’s measured result under its test conditions, not a universal real-world figure. Expect different numbers in mixed driving, on rough terrain or with larger tires.

Four different prices appear in the 2024 coverage. They measure different things, so do not compare them directly.

None of these is a current used-market price. For a used truck today, the number that matters is what the seller is asking and what the truck’s options were when new.

Who should choose the Mojave
- You spend most of your off-road time on fast dirt, sand or washboard roads and want suspension tuned for that.
- You want a Gladiator that still works as a truck for towing light loads, hauling and daily driving, as long as you confirm the towing equipment.
- You accept a noisier cabin, more steering attention on the highway, and a trail setup that trades rock-first hardware for speed.
If you mainly crawl hard rock, or you want the quietest and most composed highway ride, the reviews point toward a different Gladiator or a conventional midsize pickup.
Trip gear for desert and rough-road days
A portable 12V tire inflator is a sensible item to carry on a Mojave trip, because fast, rough-road driving puts a premium on correct tire pressure. None of the sources we cite says an inflator is included, required or endorsed by Jeep, and we are not recommending a specific model. Check your tire pressure before each trip and carry the inflator as a trip item rather than a vehicle feature.
Off-road recovery and air-management gear is a separate category. Buy it for your own trail plan rather than assuming the truck needs it.
