The Kizashi earned praise for its handling, equipment, styling and available all-wheel drive. Yet a compelling car could not overcome Suzuki’s shrinking U.S. sales and the challenge of competing in a crowded market without greater scale.
What was the last Suzuki sold new in the United States?
The Kizashi was Suzuki’s last new sedan in the U.S., not the last Suzuki automobile of any kind. Suzuki’s final U.S. model year was 2013, and that lineup also included the SX4 and Grand Vitara. In November 2012, Suzuki’s U.S. subsidiary announced it would withdraw from automobile sales and focus on motorcycles, ATVs and outboard motors. The company’s annual report dates the reorganization to April 1, 2013. Suzuki’s final U.S. lineup and corporate timeline establish the distinction.
Why did Suzuki leave the U.S. car market?
The available evidence points to declining sales and the difficulty of competing at scale, rather than to one failed model. Car and Driver reported in 2012 that U.S. Suzuki sales had peaked at about 102,000 vehicles in 2007 and were roughly one-quarter of that in 2011. Those figures are the publication’s contemporary account, not an official sales series presented here. The same article characterized Suzuki’s cars as good products that were not attracting enough buyers. Car and Driver’s account of Suzuki’s U.S. sales decline provides that context.
Suzuki’s annual report confirms the withdrawal and the U.S. business focus that replaced automobile sales, but the cited corporate record does not give a detailed causal breakdown. The evidence does not establish that the Kizashi itself caused the exit, nor does it support a Kizashi-specific U.S. sales total or a dealer-count trend. The more defensible explanation is that Suzuki faced a difficult commercial position as a smaller automaker in a crowded market.

What made the Kizashi appealing?
Introduced for the 2010 model year, the Kizashi offered a distinctive alternative to conventional compact and midsize sedans. Cars.com reviewer Jennifer Geiger identified its styling, price and equipment as strengths, and noted that affordable available AWD was unusual among cars in its intended space. Its dimensions fell between common categories: smaller than midsize cars such as the Ford Fusion, but roomier than compact alternatives such as the Volkswagen Jetta. Cars.com’s review describes that positioning.
For 2013, Edmunds lists a 2.4-liter four-cylinder producing 185 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque. The base model paired front-wheel drive with a six-speed manual; other trims used a continuously variable transmission (CVT). AWD was optional on some trims and standard on the Sport SLS. Edmunds’ 2013 specifications document those configurations.

That combination gave the Kizashi a recognizable proposition: nimble handling and available traction in a well-equipped sedan, with a choice of manual or CVT depending on trim. Its appeal was not simply that it had AWD; it was that a buyer could consider it alongside both smaller compacts and larger sedans without accepting the same conventional trade-offs as every rival.
Where did the Kizashi fall short?
Its strengths did not erase its compromises. Cars.com’s reviewer found acceleration adequate rather than exciting, criticized the CVT’s slow response and noted intrusive road noise, while praising ride comfort and agility. Edmunds also described the handling and brakes favorably, but flagged fuel economy and rear-seat room as drawbacks. These are period reviewers’ evaluations, not claims that every driver will experience the car the same way.

The powertrain figures help explain the trade-off: 185 horsepower from the four-cylinder made the Kizashi capable, but it was not an especially forceful sports sedan. A buyer comparing it with rivals had to weigh equipment, price, AWD availability and handling against acceleration, economy and cabin space. The reviews support a distinctive, credible option—not a categorical victory over its competitors.
What should a used Kizashi buyer check?
Confirm recall status by VIN
Suzuki’s official campaign concerns a risk that spiders could enter and form webs in the evaporative-emissions canister air vent line, restricting it. The campaign covers 2010–2013 Kizashi models. A 2019 owner notice says the later CY campaign superseded the 2014 campaign and required repair of all 2010–2013 Kizashi vehicles. Check the specific car’s VIN and confirm its repair status with an authorized service source; model year alone does not establish whether an individual vehicle has been repaired. Suzuki’s campaign document, revised September 21, 2022, gives the official details.

Separate historical parts support from today’s availability
Contemporary reporting in 2012 said Suzuki promised continued parts support after its withdrawal from U.S. automobile sales. That historical commitment does not establish what parts are currently in stock, how quickly they can be obtained, or whether a particular repair is practical today. Verify availability for the exact part and vehicle before buying.

“Brilliant” describes the car’s strengths, not a guarantee of commercial success. The Kizashi brought engaging handling, generous equipment, distinctive styling and accessible AWD to a competitive segment, while reviewers also identified real limitations in power delivery, fuel economy, noise and space. Suzuki’s broader U.S. sales decline made the setting especially difficult: a well-regarded product still needed enough buyers and a sustainable business behind it.

That tension is the Kizashi’s story. It could make a persuasive case to an individual sedan shopper while remaining only one product in a shrinking operation. Suzuki’s departure was a business decision affecting its automobile sales in the United States, not proof that the Kizashi was a bad car—or that a better-reviewed sedan alone could have reversed the company’s position.
