Tesla’s planned Robotaxi reveal was delayed from August 8 to October 10, 2024, after Elon Musk said he had requested an important change to the vehicle’s front. The change affected the unveiling schedule—not the launch of an already operating public Robotaxi service.
Why was Tesla’s Robotaxi reveal delayed?
On July 15, 2024, Musk publicly confirmed that he had asked for an “important design change to the front” and indicated that the vehicle needed more time. TechCrunch reported his confirmation after Tesla’s planned August 8 unveiling had been reported as moving to October.
Bloomberg had reported on July 11 that Tesla planned to postpone the event, citing people familiar with the decision. That report also attributed the shift to additional prototype work and design rework. Those details came from unnamed sources; they were not Musk’s stated explanation. Bloomberg’s report preceded Musk’s public confirmation.
What changed on the timeline?
- April 2024: Tesla had announced an August 8 Robotaxi unveiling; the available reporting establishes the original date retrospectively.
- July 11, 2024: Bloomberg reported that the event was expected to move to October, citing unnamed sources.
- July 15, 2024: Musk confirmed requesting a front-end design change. TechCrunch covered his statement.
- July 23, 2024: Musk set October 10 as the new reveal date, according to TechCrunch’s report on Tesla’s second-quarter earnings call.
- October 2024: Tesla unveiled the Cybercab at the delayed event. The Associated Press covered the unveiling.
Was the Robotaxi launch delayed, or just the reveal?
The July 2024 postponement concerned a planned presentation, not the start date of a commercial ride service. Unveiling the Cybercab in October showed the vehicle at an event; it did not establish that members of the public could book rides in it that day.
