Tesla’s 2024 Model 3 service manual documents an oil filter for the front electric drive unit, a specialized component distinct from a gasoline engine’s oil filter. The documented procedure is a repair instruction, not a routine service interval for every Tesla.
Why does an electric car have an oil filter?
“No traditional oil changes” is not the same as “no component contains oil or lubricating fluid.” A Tesla has no combustion engine that needs engine oil to lubricate its moving parts. But an electric drive unit is still a mechanical assembly, and Tesla’s service documentation identifies an oil filter associated with the front drive unit (3DU) in 2024 Model 3 service material.
Tesla’s maintenance guidance says: “Unlike gasoline cars, Tesla vehicles require no traditional oil changes, fuel system maintenance, spark plug replacements or emission checks.” That statement is about routine maintenance; it does not claim that every Tesla component is oil-free. What does Tesla’s Model 3 service manual say?
The procedure is specifically titled “Filter – Oil – Front Drive Unit (3DU) (Remove and Replace)” and applies to the 2024 Model 3 service documentation. Tesla instructs technicians to install a new filter when the existing one is removed, and to replace an oil filter that shows visible corrosion or leaks. Which filters do Tesla owners routinely replace?
Cabin air filters

For Model S and Model X vehicles produced from 2012 through 2020, Tesla recommends replacement every 2 years instead. Tesla notes that recommendations can vary with model year and environment. HEPA and Cybertruck filters
Tesla says Cybertruck is not fitted with a standard cabin air filter. For vehicles equipped with HEPA, Tesla recommends replacing the HEPA and carbon filters every 3 years. For Cybertruck, the same maintenance page recommends replacement every 2 years, or yearly if the vehicle is driven off-road or on dirt roads. These recommendations are model- and configuration-dependent and may change.

Can you replace a Tesla filter yourself?
Instructions depend on the filter and the vehicle. Tesla’s 2017–2023 Model 3 owner manual provides a cabin-filter replacement procedure and mentions a clip pry tool. That manual applies to those Model 3 years, not automatically to newer Model 3s or other Tesla models. The front drive-unit oil-filter procedure is service documentation, not a routine owner maintenance schedule. If the drive unit needs attention, use Tesla’s guidance for the specific vehicle and repair rather than inferring an interval from the existence of a filter.

What filter should you buy?
If you are shopping for a replacement, the consumer-facing item is usually a cabin air filter—not the specialized drive-unit oil filter discussed above. Check the exact model, model year and required configuration before ordering; filters are not universal across Teslas. Tesla says original parts can be found in the Tesla app under Service > Resources > Parts Shop. For a third-party part, verify fitment against the vehicle’s documentation and the seller’s compatibility details.
