Renesas acquired Bengaluru-based Steradian Semiconductors to add 4D imaging-radar technology and expertise to its advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) portfolio. The deal closed on October 17, 2022, making Steradian a wholly owned Renesas subsidiary. A month later, Renesas announced the RAA270205, a 4×4-channel automotive radar transceiver developed using Steradian technology.
Why did Renesas buy Steradian?
The acquisition was a capability addition: Renesas already offered ADAS system-on-chips (SoCs), power-management ICs, timing products and object-recognition software, while Steradian brought 4D imaging-radar technology. Renesas said combining those capabilities could simplify automotive-radar system design and help customers develop systems faster. The companies announced a definitive agreement for an all-cash acquisition on August 31, 2022; Renesas announced completion on October 17, 2022. Renesas also pointed to radar’s ability to detect objects at long distances in daylight, darkness and adverse weather, complementing cameras and other vehicle sensors. Its announcement quoted a December 2021 Strategy Analytics forecast that the number of radar sensors installed in vehicles would triple over the subsequent five years. That was a third-party forecast cited by Renesas, not a measured result or Renesas forecast.

Steradian described its focus as 4D imaging radar: radar technology intended to improve object recognition while keeping the solution compact and power-efficient. In Renesas’ proposed system, radar sensing could be paired with Renesas processing, power management, timing and recognition software. That combination matters because an ADAS system must interpret sensor inputs and make them useful to the vehicle; the acquisition was not simply a purchase of a standalone consumer device.

Renesas President and CEO Hidetoshi Shibata said, “Radar is an indispensable technology for ADAS, which uses a complex combination of various sensors.” Steradian CEO Gireesh Rajendran said the teams would continue developing radar solutions with “high performance, small footprint and low power consumption” for customers.
What is the RAA270205 radar chip?
The RAA270205 is a 4×4-channel automotive radar transceiver operating in the 76–81 GHz band. Renesas announced it on November 16, 2022, describing it as developed with Steradian technology and positioning it for demanding ADAS and Level 3+ applications. The announcement is tangible evidence that Steradian’s radar capability entered Renesas’ product roadmap. The device is a transceiver component, not by itself a complete vehicle radar or autonomous-driving system. Renesas’s RAA270205 announcement gives the product details.

What did the acquisition cost?
Renesas’ 2022 financial report records total acquisition consideration of ¥7,021 million. The reported amount comprises ¥4,971 million in cash, ¥843 million fair value for equity held immediately before the acquisition, and ¥1,207 million in contingent consideration. Did Steradian’s technology have uses beyond automotive?
Renesas also identified potential industrial applications, including surveillance, traffic monitoring of people, cars and motorcycles, and human-machine-interface systems such as gesture recognition. Separately, Visteon announced a joint-development agreement under which Steradian would provide 4D image-radar hardware and perception-software technology for ADAS-focused development.
