Nissan ended production of the R35-generation GT-R in August 2025, after an 18-year run. The company did not give one definitive, model-specific reason for the decision in its announcement. It said the R35’s production was over, but described the GT-R nameplate as something it intends to reimagine—not something it was abandoning.
Why did Nissan stop making the GT-R?
Nissan’s August 26, 2025 announcement marked the end of R35 production, but did not attribute that decision to a single cause such as emissions rules, weak sales, production costs or a particular successor plan. Nissan’s message was framed as a generational transition: the R35 had reached the end of its production run, while the GT-R badge could return in a future form. Nissan’s announcement does not establish a more specific explanation.
Nissan has separately said it plans to streamline its lineup, exit low-performing products and reinvest in growth. That is relevant company-wide context, but Nissan did not identify the GT-R as one of those products or say the portfolio plan caused the R35’s end. Its portfolio strategy should therefore not be treated as a confirmed, GT-R-specific reason.
Did Nissan discontinue the GT-R or only the R35?
What ended was the R35 generation. Nissan said it was committed to reimagining the GT-R badge for a future generation, and CEO Ivan Espinosa said, “While we don’t have a precise plan finalized today, the GT-R will evolve and reemerge in the future.” That statement expresses Nissan’s intention, not a confirmed production program, launch date or specification.

When and where did R35 production end?
The R35 launched in 2007 and ran until 2025, an 18-year production span. Japan was the final sales region, and Nissan said the last R35 rolled off the line at its Tochigi plant in August 2025. Nissan reported approximately 48,000 R35 GT-Rs produced over the run. The final car was a Premium edition T-Spec finished in Midnight Purple. The North American wind-down came earlier
Nissan North America had already described 2024 special editions as the R35’s closing chapter in that market and said North American production would sunset in October 2024. That regional announcement did not mark the worldwide production end; Japan remained the final sales region until 2025. Nissan North America’s June 2024 release covers that earlier regional timeline.

What does the end of production mean for owners and buyers?
No new R35 GT-Rs are being built. The production announcement does not say how much new-car inventory remains in any particular market, establish used-car values or warranty terms, or promise how long Nissan will supply parts or service support. Owners and shoppers should check with Nissan or a dealer in their region for current stock, warranty and parts information rather than assume those details from the production news.
