Nissan discontinued the Titan after the 2024 model year because it never achieved the sales scale needed to challenge Ford, Chevrolet, GMC and Ram—not because the final truck lacked serious capability. The 2024 Titan still used a 5.6-liter V8, and the heavy-duty Titan XD was rated to tow up to 11,050 pounds. Nissan’s current model information identifies 2024 as the final production year and points shoppers to the midsize Frontier, not to a like-for-like full-size replacement.
When did Nissan stop making the Titan?
The Titan’s first U.S. model arrived for 2004 after its 2003 introduction. Nissan launched a second generation for the 2016 model year and refreshed it for 2020. Production ended after the 2024 model year.

“Production of the Nissan TITAN is scheduled to end summer 2024 at our Canton plant in Mississippi. Under Nissan’s Ambition 2030 vision of an electrified future, we are accelerating the process of transforming the Canton plant with the latest in EV manufacturing technology. This will support production of two all-new, all-electric vehicles. There will be no workforce reductions due to this action.”

That explains the plant’s role in Nissan’s electrification plans, but it does not by itself explain the Titan’s commercial performance. The sales record provides the more important context.
The Titan never reached the scale Nissan reportedly wanted
WardsAuto, citing Wards Intelligence data, reported that Nissan entered the market hoping to sell roughly 100,000 to 200,000 Titans annually. The truck’s historical high stayed below 87,000 units in any year, and it sold no more than 53,000 units in any year of the decade before WardsAuto’s 2023 report; 2017 reached 53,000 after a makeover.
Two later figures show how small the business had become, although they come from different reporting contexts and should not be treated as one continuous dataset:

For a late entrant, those volumes made it difficult to spread development, manufacturing and marketing costs across enough trucks. They also limited the Titan’s visibility with commercial and fleet buyers, who are especially important in the full-size segment.
Why the Titan struggled against established pickups
Brand loyalty made conquest sales difficult
WardsAuto characterizes pickup buyers as strongly brand-loyal and reports that the Titan failed to attract enough retail or fleet customers. Buyers already invested in Ford, Chevrolet, GMC or Ram ecosystems had familiar dealers, financing relationships, service networks and work-truck configurations. Winning them required more than a capable alternative.
Rivals updated more often and offered more configurations
WardsAuto also points to a wider range of configurations and more regular improvements from Ford, General Motors and Ram. Full-size buyers can choose among multiple cab and bed combinations, powertrains, payload packages, towing equipment and fleet versions. A smaller lineup gives shoppers fewer ways to match a truck precisely to a job, and it gives fleets fewer reasons to add another brand.

These factors are reported explanations rather than a controlled study proving one exclusive cause. MotorTrend likewise noted that the Titan did not seriously displace the class leaders after its 2016-generation launch and 2020 refresh. The defensible conclusion is cumulative: entrenched competitors, limited scale, fleet traction and product breadth worked against Nissan at the same time.

Nissan’s 2024 specifications show why the discontinuation should not be read as a failure of basic engineering. Both Titan versions used a 5.6-liter V8 and nine-speed automatic transmission. The XD was Nissan’s heavy-duty variant.
| 2024 model | Maximum towing | Maximum payload | Powertrain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Titan | 9,290 pounds | 1,600 pounds | 5.6-liter V8, nine-speed automatic |
| Titan XD | 11,050 pounds | 2,360 pounds | 5.6-liter V8, nine-speed automatic |
Those are maximum published ratings; actual capacity varies with cab, bed, drivetrain, trim and equipment. They establish that the Titan could perform serious towing and hauling work, not that every Titan matched the XD’s maximums.

What replaced the Nissan Titan?
Nissan’s discontinued-model page directs shoppers to the Frontier after stating that the Titan is no longer in production. The Frontier is a midsize pickup, so it is not a direct substitute for the Titan’s dimensions, towing envelope or payload capacity.
The sources available for this account do not establish that Nissan has announced a new full-size Titan successor. A future electric truck could eventually occupy that space, but Nissan’s plant statement about two all-electric vehicles is not an announcement of a Titan replacement.

The Titan is a useful case study in how hard it is for a late-arriving challenger to scale in a mature, brand-driven segment. Its final V8 and substantial ratings show that capability alone does not guarantee volume. A successful full-size pickup program also needs a broad, frequently updated lineup; strong fleet acceptance; extensive dealer and service coverage; and enough sales to fund the next product cycle.

That is the Titan’s lingering “haunting” legacy: it demonstrated that Nissan could build a credible full-size truck, but credibility was not enough to overcome the commercial advantages of long-established rivals.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you still buy a new Nissan Titan?
No. Nissan identifies 2024 as the Titan and Titan XD’s final production year. Remaining inventory, if any, would be used stock rather than a new model year.
Is the Nissan Frontier the Titan’s replacement?
No. Nissan promotes the Frontier after discontinuing the Titan, but the Frontier is a midsize pickup and is not a like-for-like full-size successor.
Was the Titan discontinued because Nissan’s V8 was incapable?
No. The 2024 Titan retained a 5.6-liter V8, while Nissan rated the Titan XD to tow up to 11,050 pounds. The documented issue was commercial scale and competition, not an absence of capability.
