The Infiniti FX50 is unusual because it brought a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8, sports-car-inspired proportions and performance chassis equipment together in a five-passenger crossover. That combination makes a strong case for calling it one of Infiniti’s most distinctive vehicles—but “most unique” is a judgment, not an objective ranking.
What made the FX50 different?
Infiniti described the FX as a fusion of luxury, performance and SUV utility. The second-generation design put that idea into a shape unlike a conventional boxy SUV: a long hood, stretched wheelbase, short front and rear overhangs, and a low center of gravity gave it a forward-leaning, almost sports-car-like profile.
The distinction was not just styling. The FX50 paired that shape with a V8 and performance-oriented hardware, while still offering seating for five. Its identity came from the combination: a crossover designed to look and drive with more emphasis on sport than most utility vehicles.
How powerful is the FX50’s V8?
According to Infiniti/Nissan’s 2009 launch material, the FX50’s 5.0-liter V8 produced 390 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. Infiniti’s 2009 brochure identifies it as a 32-valve DOHC engine with VVEL technology. The engine was paired with a seven-speed automatic transmission.

What performance hardware did it have?
The 2009 Infiniti brochure lists performance equipment that complemented the V8, including performance brakes, AWD-related hardware, available active damping and rear steering, and 21-inch Enkei aluminum-alloy wheels. These specifications help explain why the FX50 was more than a powerful engine installed in an otherwise ordinary crossover: Infiniti gave it chassis and wheel equipment to match its performance positioning.
Equipment availability can vary by configuration. The brochure identifies active damping and rear steering as available features, so they should not be assumed to be fitted to every FX50.

Was the FX50 a sports car or an SUV?
It was a crossover, not a sports car. Infiniti’s stated concept combined sporty performance with SUV utility, and the FX accommodated five passengers. Its long hood, low stance and short overhangs borrowed visual cues associated with sports cars, while its body style and passenger capacity kept it in the SUV category.
When was the FX50 made, and what happened to the name?
The FX50 name belonged to the second-generation FX era. Infiniti later folded the FX into the QX70 naming structure. The manufacturer material available here establishes that sequence but does not establish an exact start-and-end year range for the FX50 badge, so a precise year list would require confirmation from year-specific market records.

Is the FX50 rare or collectible?
The V8 configuration is distinctive, but there is no reliable production-volume, surviving-population or geography-specific collector-price figure established here. That means the FX50 can be described as unusual by specification and design, but not assigned a defensible rarity ranking or collector premium on that basis alone.
For a particular vehicle, condition, service history, local parts availability and current market listings matter more than a broad rarity label. Those are location- and vehicle-specific questions, not conclusions that follow from the factory specifications.

What to consider when comparing or buying one
Compare an FX50 with other performance crossovers on more than horsepower. The factory material documents its engine, transmission, chassis equipment and distinctive proportions; day-to-day ownership requires separate checks of the individual vehicle and the local market.

- Chassis equipment: Check which available features, such as active damping or rear steering, are actually fitted and functioning.
- Wheels and brakes: Verify wheel and brake condition, particularly if the vehicle has the brochure-listed 21-inch Enkei wheels.
- Practicality: Assess whether its five-passenger layout and cargo space suit your needs; its sporty proportions are not the same as a boxier SUV’s packaging.
- Local ownership costs: Check service support, replacement-part availability and repair costs in your area. These can’t be inferred from the original brochure.
