Hyundai discontinued the Accent in the United States for the 2023 model year because it had expanded its SUV lineup to include the Venue. Hyundai said Venue would become its entry-level model, while the Elantra and Sonata would continue as sedan choices. Canada’s Accent exit came earlier, after the 2020 model year. The company’s explanation was about lineup positioning; sales figures offer context but do not establish that poor sales alone caused the decision.
Why Hyundai discontinued the Accent in the United States
In its June 30, 2022 model-year announcement, Hyundai Motor America said the Accent was being discontinued for 2023 “due to an expanded SUV lineup that includes Venue.” The company described Venue as the new entry-level Hyundai, while confirming that the Elantra and Sonata would remain in its sedan lineup. Hyundai Motor America’s 2023 model-year announcement is the clearest explanation Hyundai gave for the U.S. change.
That points to a change in how Hyundai filled its least expensive or entry-level spot: a small crossover took that role rather than the Accent subcompact sedan. It does not establish that the Accent was discontinued solely because of sales, or that Hyundai applied a specific sales cutoff.
Why Canada lost the Accent earlier
Hyundai Canada discontinued the Accent after the 2020 model year, ahead of the U.S. decision. The company says it did not create a direct replacement. In 2020, then-president and CEO Don Romano described the launches of Venue and Kona as opportunities to serve buyers seeking entry-level transportation with the features they wanted. The Car Guide’s 2020 report quoted Romano and reported that the Accent had sold just over 462,000 units in Canada since its 1994 launch, and that it was the country’s best-selling subcompact car from 2009 through 2018. Those are historical figures, not current sales data.

Did sales cause the discontinuation?
Hyundai’s public announcement names the expanded SUV lineup, including Venue, as the reason for ending the Accent in the U.S. The company’s sales reports show the market context, but they do not say sales alone drove the decision.
- Hyundai Motor America reported 17,823 U.S. Accent sales in 2022, down 9% from 19,614 in 2021. In the same release, it said SUVs made up 74% of Hyundai’s U.S. retail sales in December 2022. The figures help describe the backdrop, but neither the 9% annual decline nor the December SUV-sales mix proves why Hyundai made the decision. Hyundai did not attach a quantified sales threshold to its announcement.

What replaced the Accent for shoppers?
There was no one-for-one replacement, according to Hyundai Canada’s alternatives page. Its guidance presents Venue and Elantra as options with different strengths, rather than as identical substitutes. The Venue is a subcompact crossover for shoppers interested in an SUV format, compact footprint, or cargo flexibility. The Elantra is a sedan for drivers who prefer that body style or are looking for fuel economy.

The Accent is no longer offered in Hyundai’s U.S. lineup for the 2023 model year onward, and Hyundai Canada says it was discontinued after the 2020 model year. These sources establish the North American lineup changes; they do not establish that Hyundai ended the Accent nameplate worldwide.
