Honda announced in March 2021 that production of the S660 would end in March 2022, but its announcement did not give a definitive reason for discontinuing the two-seat sports car. Honda later cited parts-supply limits only to explain why it capped a separate final run at 650 cars—not why it made the original decision.
What Honda said about ending S660 production
Honda’s March 12, 2021 announcement introduced the S660 Modulo X Version Z special edition and set March 2022 as the end of production. It did not identify a specific business, regulatory, or other underlying reason for the decision. Honda said combined sales of the S660 and S660 Modulo X had exceeded 30,000 at that point; that figure covers sales of both named models, not the eventual total number produced. Honda’s announcement
Why the final extra 650 cars were limited
On November 1, 2021, Honda announced an additional 650 cars after the initial allocation sold out faster than expected and customers asked for another chance to order. Honda said limited supplies of some parts meant it had to cap that extra production. The announcement described the 650 as a final sale before the already-announced March 2022 production end. It did not say parts shortages caused Honda to discontinue the S660 in the first place. Honda’s announcement of the additional run
When the S660 ended, and how many Honda produced
Honda records the final S660 leaving production on March 25, 2022. The car had launched in April 2015, and Honda reports cumulative production of 38,916 vehicles over the model’s seven-year run. That production total is not the same metric as the more than 30,000 combined sales Honda reported in March 2021. Honda’s final-line-off history

Was a safety rule the reason?
The official Honda materials cited here do not establish a link between a safety regulation and the discontinuation. Honda’s archived safety page describes the City-Brake Active System as optional and dependent on vehicle type, with stated operating conditions and limitations; it does not identify the system or a regulation as a reason production ended. A regulatory explanation should therefore be treated as unconfirmed, not as Honda’s stated rationale. Honda’s archived S660 safety information
What Honda’s history says about the car
Honda described the S660 as a two-seat open sports model. At the final line-off, development chief 椋本 (Mukimoto) reflected that continuing production for seven years had been possible because people continued to love the car. Honda Auto Body president 細川 (Hosokawa) said the S660’s strong attention to detail made production challenging, while raising employee motivation. These comments offer perspective on the model and its manufacturing, but neither names the reason Honda chose to end production. Honda’s final-line-off history

Bottom line on why Honda stopped making the S660
The confirmed account is narrow: Honda announced a March 2022 production end in March 2021, later limited a separate 650-car extra run because of parts-supply constraints, and recorded the final car leaving the line on March 25, 2022. Honda’s cited announcements do not state a definitive underlying reason for discontinuation, so claims that it was specifically due to safety rules, weak demand, profitability, or a successor plan go beyond what those sources establish.
