They are struggling because many luxury EVs have not delivered enough extra value to justify their prices, depreciation risk, charging compromises, and software or service friction.
That distinction matters. Global EV sales exceeded 20 million in 2025, rose about 20% year over year, and were expected by the International Energy Agency to approach 23 million in 2026. The problem is concentrated higher up the market, where buyers expect a nearly flawless ownership experience and are less willing to absorb the risk of rapidly changing technology.

What is actually failing?
The broad electric-vehicle market is still expanding. The weaker story is the business case for certain expensive electric flagships, particularly large luxury sedans and high-performance models.
A premium buyer is not comparing a $100,000-plus EV only with an ordinary gasoline car. The comparison is usually against the best gasoline luxury sedans, SUVs, hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and newer electric vehicles from brands offering more technology for less money. That buyer expects:

When an expensive EV delivers spectacular acceleration but still requires route planning, has an uncertain residual value, suffers software bugs, or feels technologically dated after a short time, its price becomes much harder to defend.
“Failing,” therefore, should mean that a model or strategy is struggling on sales, residual values, profitability, or the overall luxury ownership proposition. It does not mean that electric vehicles as a category are collapsing.
The sales data shows a premium-market problem
Porsche provides one of the clearest examples. The company delivered 279,449 vehicles globally in 2025, a 10.1% decline from 2024. Taycan deliveries fell 22% to 16,339 vehicles, with Porsche attributing the decline primarily to slower adoption of electromobility. Porsche also reported a 26% decline in China, where luxury brands face particularly intense competition in fully electric vehicles.

The contrast inside Porsche’s own lineup is revealing: the combustion-powered 911 reached a delivery record during the same period. That suggests the issue is not simply that buyers have stopped wanting expensive cars or stopped caring about Porsche. Instead, some buyers are not convinced that the Taycan’s electric proposition is worth choosing over the alternatives.
Porsche’s electric Macan performed much better. The company delivered 45,367 fully electric Macans in 2025, representing more than half of Macan deliveries. That is not proof that every premium electric SUV will succeed, but it shows why body style and utility matter. A crossover offers a broader luxury-car use case than a costly electric sports sedan, especially when customers are already uncertain about charging and resale values.
Mercedes-Benz reported 2025 passenger-car battery-electric sales of 168,800, down 9%. Its Top-End segment—which includes Mercedes-AMG, Mercedes-Maybach, G-Class, S-Class, GLS, EQS, and EQS SUV—fell 5% to 268,000 units. Mercedes also reported a 19% decline in China passenger-car sales and a 12% decline in the United States.
Those numbers do not isolate the performance of every EQS, EQE, or electric G-Class. They do show that premium electric products are operating inside a difficult luxury market, especially in China, rather than enjoying automatic demand simply because they carry a famous badge.
There are also important counterexamples. BMW reported 442,059 global BEV deliveries in 2025, up 3.6%, while total electrified deliveries rose 8.2%. Product mix, geography, pricing, and timing matter. The evidence supports a selective premium slowdown, not a universal premium-EV collapse.
1. The price makes every weakness more obvious
Luxury buyers will tolerate very little friction when they are paying for a flagship. A cheaper EV can be forgiven for having a less impressive interior, a slower charging curve, or a smaller service network. A premium EV cannot make the same request easily because its price implies that the manufacturer has already solved those problems.
Large batteries and powerful motors can produce remarkable acceleration and competitive range, but they are expensive and heavy. Some owners pay for performance they rarely use and for a battery capacity they need only on occasional road trips. The result can be a vehicle that is technically impressive but economically inefficient from the customer’s perspective.
The luxury buyer may instead choose a hybrid or plug-in hybrid. Such a vehicle can provide quiet electric driving for short trips while preserving gasoline flexibility for long journeys. BMW’s 2025 U.S. sales figures illustrate this substitution effect: BMW BEV sales fell 16.7% to 42,484, while plug-in-hybrid sales increased 30.7% to 25,351.
That does not prove that every customer rejected a battery-electric BMW. It does suggest that at least some premium customers wanted electrification without giving up the convenience of gasoline. If the plug-in hybrid is more useful for the buyer’s actual routine, a pure EV has to offer enough additional value to overcome that convenience advantage.
2. Depreciation is damaging the luxury-EV proposition
Rapid depreciation is one of the most serious problems for expensive electric cars because luxury vehicles are frequently leased or financed. Buyers do not evaluate only the purchase price; they evaluate the monthly payment and what the vehicle will be worth at the end of the ownership period.

Used-car analysis has estimated five-year depreciation of approximately 77% for the BMW i7 and approximately 59.1% for the Porsche Taycan. These are model- and market-specific estimates, not guaranteed outcomes. Mileage, trim, incentives, condition, market demand, accident history, and transaction type can change the result substantially. Even so, the estimates illustrate the scale of residual-value risk facing some large luxury EVs.
Several forces contribute to that risk:
- New-car price cuts: When manufacturers reduce prices or offer large incentives, used examples immediately look less valuable.
- Rapid product cycles: New batteries, faster charging systems, improved software, and revised driver-assistance hardware can make a two-year-old EV seem outdated.
- Uncertain battery condition: Buyers of used EVs may want more evidence about battery health than an ordinary used-car inspection provides.
- High repair anxiety: A used luxury EV can be inexpensive to purchase while remaining expensive to insure, repair, and maintain.
- Lease-market pressure: If financial institutions expect weak residual values, lease payments can remain high even when the used car’s sticker price falls.
This creates a negative feedback loop. New-car shoppers demand discounts or leases because they fear depreciation. Discounts lower transaction prices and residual values. Falling residual values make the next new purchase look even less rational, which makes dealers and lenders more cautious.

For a used purchase, a used EV inspection that includes the vehicle’s high-voltage system, charging behavior, accident history, tires, suspension, and available battery-health information can reduce uncertainty. It cannot guarantee future resale value or eliminate the cost of owning a complex luxury car, but it is more sensible than assuming a steep discount automatically makes the vehicle a bargain.
3. Charging is still a premium-experience problem
Public charging is improving, but the premium buyer is purchasing convenience as much as hardware. A six-figure vehicle is expected to make long trips feel easy. The relevant question is not merely whether a fast charger exists somewhere along the route. It is whether the entire journey is predictable:
- Can the driver find a compatible charger?
- Is it working when the vehicle arrives?
- Will the vehicle deliver its advertised charging speed?
- Are there enough stalls to avoid a queue?
- Does payment work without creating another account?
- Can the vehicle’s navigation system plan charging accurately?
The IEA reported rapid growth in public charging points during 2024 and 2025. It also found that public-charger deployment lagged EV deployment in the United States and United Kingdom during 2024. In 2025, only a small share of the global EV fleet could use chargers above 250 kW. Charger-count growth is therefore encouraging, but it does not mean every EV can access the same speed or reliability.
Home charging changes the calculation for owners with a garage or dedicated parking space. An EV home charger can make daily use much more convenient by allowing the car to begin most mornings with the energy needed for routine driving. But buyers must verify the vehicle’s connector, the charger’s output, the home’s electrical capacity, installation requirements, local code, and certification. A home charger does not solve weak resale values, poor software, limited service coverage, or an overpriced vehicle; it solves one specific source of friction.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesApartment residents and people who park on the street face a harder problem. They may depend almost entirely on public infrastructure, which turns charging from an invisible daily habit into a recurring logistics task. That trade-off is easier to accept in a less expensive commuter EV than in a premium vehicle marketed around effortless ownership.
4. Traditional luxury brands overestimated the power of the badge
Established luxury manufacturers often assumed that their brand equity would transfer automatically to electric flagships. It has not always worked that way because electrification changes what makes a vehicle feel advanced.
In the gasoline era, premium differentiation was strongly associated with engine refinement, transmission behavior, chassis tuning, materials, craftsmanship, and heritage. Those qualities still matter, but an electric vehicle also invites comparisons based on software, charging speed, battery efficiency, screen design, over-the-air updates, driver assistance, and digital services.
A newer EV company—or a Chinese manufacturer with a large domestic market—may be able to offer a larger cabin, faster charging, more visible technology, and a lower price. The traditional brand may still have better dealer coverage, stronger perceived quality, and a more established service network, but the badge alone no longer guarantees technological leadership.

The IEA reported that China accounted for more than half of global electric-car sales in 2025. Intense domestic competition, attractive pricing, and a wide selection have helped Chinese manufacturers develop and launch products quickly. The Associated Press has also reported on Chinese manufacturers offering premium vehicles and hybrids at aggressive prices while European luxury brands encounter slowing demand in China.
That creates a difficult competitive situation for Western luxury brands. A Mercedes EQS or BMW i7 is not competing only with the company’s own S-Class or 7 Series. It is also competing with electric vehicles that define luxury differently—through rear-seat technology, fast charging, software integration, cabin space, or features that would once have been reserved for a flagship.
5. Large luxury sedans may have been the wrong first bet
Many early premium EV strategies centered on large sedans and heavy flagship SUVs. These vehicles were logical technology showcases, but they also had the narrowest audiences and the highest costs.
A large sedan typically requires a substantial battery to provide the range expected by its customers. That adds weight and cost. The customer is then asked to pay a premium for an aerodynamic shape that may be less practical than a crossover, while also accepting the charging and depreciation risks of a new technology.

The success of Porsche’s electric Macan relative to the Taycan points toward a more practical product-market fit. Crossovers and SUVs give buyers a more visible reason to choose an EV: useful cargo space, a higher seating position, flexible passenger capacity, and an everyday format that many luxury customers already prefer.
This does not mean every premium buyer wants an SUV or that electric sedans have no future. It means the business case is stronger when the EV offers clear utility in addition to acceleration and prestige. A vehicle that is expensive, heavy, low-slung, and difficult to charge needs an unusually strong reason to exist.
6. Reliability, software, and service can cancel out EV simplicity
Electric drivetrains have fewer moving parts than conventional combustion drivetrains, but a modern luxury EV is not a simple machine. It combines high-voltage components with complex thermal management, air suspension, advanced electronics, large infotainment systems, driver-assistance sensors, electric accessories, and software controlling almost every major function.
Consumer Reports’ 2025 reliability research, based on owner survey responses covering roughly 380,000 vehicles, found that EVs and plug-in hybrids continued to report more problems than conventional gasoline vehicles. This is survey-based reliability information, not a controlled count of mechanical failures, and it does not mean every EV is unreliable. It does show that the expected simplicity of an EV has not consistently produced a trouble-free ownership experience.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For a mainstream car, an intermittent screen or delayed software update may be frustrating. For a luxury flagship, it contradicts the product’s central promise. A premium vehicle should not require the owner to troubleshoot charging errors, wait weeks for specialized parts, or wonder whether a software update will fix one problem while creating another.
Service coverage also matters more with an EV because not every dealership is equally equipped or trained to handle high-voltage systems. A buyer should check whether the local dealer can service the specific model, how far the nearest qualified facility is, how warranty repairs are handled, and whether replacement parts are commonly available.
7. Lucid shows why a good product can still be a difficult business
Lucid illustrates the difference between product quality, customer interest, and commercial durability. Its Air and Gravity models have demonstrated that a premium EV can attract critical attention and deliver impressive technology. Lucid delivered 15,841 vehicles in 2025, up 55% year over year.
However, the company also reported a full-year net loss of $12.09 per diluted share and guided to production of 25,000 to 27,000 vehicles in 2026. In the first quarter of 2026, Lucid produced 5,500 vehicles and delivered 3,093. Deliveries were disrupted for 29 days by a supplier-quality issue involving Gravity’s second-row seats.
Those figures do not prove that Lucid’s vehicles are unwanted. They show the financial difficulty of building premium EVs at low volume. The manufacturer must fund expensive research, battery and software development, factory operations, warranty support, logistics, and a service footprint before it has enough vehicles on the road to spread those costs efficiently.
A premium EV startup can therefore be technologically excellent and commercially fragile at the same time. Buyers must consider not just whether they like the car, but whether the company will be able to support it, supply parts, update its software, and maintain a service network for the length of ownership.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What premium EVs need to do better
The winners in the premium EV market will probably not be the vehicles with the biggest battery or the quickest acceleration alone. They will be the ones that make the ownership proposition easy to understand and difficult to replace.
- Offer clear everyday utility. Practical crossovers, efficient vehicles, and genuinely useful rear-seat or cargo accommodations can reach more buyers than technology demonstrators.
- Make charging predictable. Range matters, but charger access, route planning, payment, uptime, and real-world charging speed matter just as much.
- Control total ownership risk. Stable pricing, transparent battery warranties, accessible service, and credible residual-value strategies are more persuasive than launch-day specifications.
- Provide distinctive technology. A premium badge is not enough if a cheaper competitor charges faster, has better software, or offers more useful driver assistance.
- Price the risk fairly. Buyers may accept a new technology, but they are less likely to pay a huge premium while also carrying all the uncertainty about depreciation and support.
- Respect regional differences. A model that succeeds in Europe, China, or the United States may not have the same product-market fit elsewhere. Charging infrastructure, incentives, body-style preferences, and local competition vary considerably.

2. Compare the total cost, not just the discount
Include insurance, tires, electricity, installation, financing, expected depreciation, and possible service costs. A heavily discounted luxury EV may be a good value, but the purchase price is only one part of the ownership cost.
3. Decide whether you should lease or buy
Leasing can limit exposure to uncertain resale values, but a lease is not automatically cheap. Compare the monthly payment, upfront costs, mileage allowance, end-of-term charges, and lease residual. A purchase may make more sense if the vehicle is priced fairly and you intend to keep it for many years; a lease may be safer when technology and residual values are changing quickly.
4. Investigate local support
Find the nearest qualified service location and ask about high-voltage repairs, loaner vehicles, software problems, parts availability, and warranty procedures. This is particularly important for low-volume brands and models.
5. Treat used bargains with caution
Low prices can create an opportunity, especially for buyers who can charge at home and plan to keep the vehicle for a long time. But check battery-health information, remaining warranty coverage, tire and suspension costs, insurance quotes, software support, accident history, and the manufacturer’s service footprint before assuming the depreciation has already created a bargain.
The bottom line on high-end electric cars
Premium EVs are struggling because their technology premium has often been easier to see on a specification sheet than in everyday ownership. Buyers are being asked to pay more while accepting uncertain resale values, charging planning, fast product cycles, software complexity, and sometimes limited service support.
The market evidence is real: Porsche’s Taycan declined sharply while its combustion 911 set a delivery record; Mercedes-Benz reported weaker BEV and Top-End sales; BMW’s U.S. plug-in-hybrid growth suggests some buyers are choosing flexibility instead of going fully electric; and used luxury EVs can lose value rapidly.
But the broader EV transition is not failing. Global sales are growing, BMW’s worldwide BEV deliveries increased, and Porsche’s electric Macan shows that the right body style and use case can attract buyers. The premium electric cars most likely to succeed will be those that combine useful design, reliable software, strong charging ecosystems, dependable service, and pricing that does not force customers to absorb every risk of a rapidly changing market.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are electric-vehicle sales collapsing?
No. Global EV sales exceeded 20 million in 2025 and were expected by the IEA to reach roughly 23 million in 2026. The weakness is concentrated in selected premium models and markets, not the entire EV category.
Why did Porsche’s electric Macan perform better than the Taycan?
The Macan is a crossover with broader everyday utility, while the Taycan is a more expensive sports sedan. Porsche reported 45,367 fully electric Macan deliveries in 2025, more than half of Macan deliveries, compared with 16,339 Taycans.
Are luxury EVs inherently unreliable?
No. Consumer Reports’ 2025 findings were based on owner surveys and showed that EVs and plug-in hybrids continued to report more problems than conventional gasoline vehicles overall. That does not establish that every EV is unreliable or that its electric motor is mechanically inferior.
Can a sharply depreciated luxury EV be a good used-car deal?
It can be, particularly for an owner with dependable home charging who plans to keep the vehicle for years. Before buying, check battery-health information, remaining warranty, service access, insurance, tire and suspension costs, software support, and the vehicle’s accident and maintenance history.
The Bottom Line
High-end electric cars are not failing because electrification has failed. They are struggling when an expensive badge, huge battery, and impressive acceleration do not compensate for depreciation, charging friction, software concerns, and weaker-than-expected value. Premium EVs need to be easier to own—not merely faster to 60 mph.
