The roughly $287 million figure was the original jury verdict in a 2024 product-liability case arising from a fatal 2020 crash involving a Harley-Davidson trike. It was not a new 2026 court order, and a New York trial court later conditionally reduced or vacated parts of the damages. The sources available here do not establish the final judgment or the outcome of any appeal.
What happened in the crash
On June 6, 2020, Harold Morris and Pamela SinClair were riding a 2019 Harley-Davidson three-wheeled motorcycle in Pennsylvania when it crashed. SinClair died, and Morris suffered severe injuries. Morris and SinClair’s estate later brought product-liability claims against Harley-Davidson.
The plaintiffs alleged that a problem with the trike’s traction-control system caused or contributed to the crash. Harley-Davidson disputed that the motorcycle was defective and argued that Morris had not proved either a defect or causation. The company also disputed responsibility for actions taken by the repair shop. Those were contested claims; the jury’s verdict was the finding in the plaintiffs’ favor.
Why the case involved an earlier crash and a recall
Reporting on the case describes an earlier 2019 crash in Florida involving the same motorcycle, followed by a later recall concerning the trike’s traction-control software. Morris’s side said he had the motorcycle serviced after the Florida crash and relied on assurances that it was safe. Harley-Davidson disputed the connection between that crash and the recall. These points formed part of the parties’ competing accounts; they do not establish, by themselves, what caused the 2020 Pennsylvania crash.

What the jury awarded
On August 13, 2024, a Livingston County, New York, jury returned a verdict reported at about $287 million. Contemporary reporting identified $120 million in punitive damages for Morris and another $120 million for SinClair’s estate, or $240 million combined. Other damages made up the balance of the reported total. Insurance Journal’s coverage of the verdict reported those figures.
Punitive damages are distinct from compensation for an individual’s losses: they are awarded to punish or deter conduct, rather than simply reimburse medical costs or injury-related harm. The verdict’s size drew attention in part because the reported punitive awards accounted for most of the headline total.

How the trial court changed parts of the verdict
In December 2024, the New York trial court granted Harley-Davidson’s post-trial motion in part. Its amended decision conditionally reduced two of Morris’s awards and vacated one award to SinClair’s estate. The court ordered a new trial on certain damages unless the plaintiffs agreed to specified reductions.
| Damages component | Original jury award | Trial court’s December 2024 decision |
|---|---|---|
| Morris’s future pain and suffering | $15 million | Conditionally reduced to $3 million |
| Morris’s future medical expenses | $15 million | Conditionally reduced to $1 million |
| SinClair estate’s conscious pain and suffering | $2.5 million | Award vacated; a new trial on certain damages was ordered unless the plaintiffs stipulated to specified reductions |
The decision applies New York’s standard for reviewing damages awards. It states: “The amount of damages awarded for personal injuries is primarily a question for the jury, however, an award may be set aside ‘as excessive or inadequate if it deviates materially from what would be reasonable compensation.’” The court attributes that standard to New York CPLR 5501(c). Does Harley-Davidson have to pay $287 million?
The reported $287 million was the original jury verdict, not a confirmed final amount payable. The trial court’s conditional reductions and vacatur mean the original total cannot be presented as the final judgment without knowing what happened next. The available sources do not establish whether the plaintiffs accepted the reductions, whether a damages retrial occurred, or the final entered judgment.
Harley-Davidson’s trial attorney said after the verdict that the company disagreed and planned to appeal. That contemporaneous statement of intent does not confirm that an appeal was filed or resolve its outcome. The Buffalo News’ August 2024 report also quoted Morris describing accountability as a main reason for the lawsuit. Neither statement changes the later procedural question of what judgment ultimately became enforceable.
