Their translucent Neothane let internal lights shine through, creating a striking effect on the Golden Sahara II. But retrospective reporting says the tires struggled in wet weather, melted under heavy braking, distracted other drivers and cost too much to produce commercially. The concept looked futuristic; dependable road use demanded more than a spectacular glow.
What were Goodyear’s glowing tires?
Goodyear developed custom tires from Neothane, which the company described as a translucent form of synthetic rubber. Internal lighting made the tires glow. The best-known display was the Golden Sahara II, a custom car developed by Jim Street and George Barris.
In its March 5, 2019 release, Goodyear said the concept formed part of research into tires that might improve visibility in bad weather or light up when the driver braked. Those were proposed functions, not demonstrated safety benefits.
Goodyear presented the restored Golden Sahara II at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show with newly built translucent tires. That confirms a modern recreation for the presentation; it does not establish that the original 1960s tires survived intact or where the car is currently displayed.

Why did Goodyear’s glowing tires fail?
IEEE Spectrum’s 2017 retrospective reports four central barriers: poor behavior in wet weather, melting under heavy braking, distraction, and a cost too high for commercial production. These are retrospective accounts, not details confirmed in Goodyear’s 2019 release. The available sources provide no controlled wet-grip results, braking distances or comparative cost figures, so the failures can be described qualitatively, not ranked by measured performance.
They struggled with ordinary road conditions
A road tire has to work when the pavement is wet and remain dependable through braking and wear. IEEE Spectrum reports poor wet-weather performance and says the tires melted under heavy braking. Those reported problems put everyday function at odds with a design built around translucence and illumination.

The lighting could attract the wrong kind of attention
IEEE Spectrum says the setup used 18 small bulbs in the rims. It also recounts a Life magazine report that the colored glow distracted other motorists: some reportedly drove through red lights or stopped to stare. The lights made the concept memorable, but attention from surrounding traffic was not the same as improved visibility for the driver.
Production economics were another obstacle
IEEE Spectrum reports that the tires were too expensive for commercial production. A custom-built concept could justify unusual materials and lighting for a show car; a product intended for ordinary motorists would also have to be practical to manufacture and maintain. The sources do not establish a specific price or cost breakdown.

Why the idea looked more promising than it was
Goodyear’s concept joined two ambitions: a dramatic visual effect and possible added visibility. The tire’s translucent material and internal lights served the first immediately, while the proposed safety functions still had to coexist with wet-road behavior, hard braking and commercial production. In the failure account reported by IEEE Spectrum, those road-use and business demands proved decisive.
The period’s promotional language captured the fashion side of the dream. IEEE Spectrum reproduces a passage it attributes to a 1961 Goodyear press release, imagining tires chosen to match a car’s colors—or even a woman’s wardrobe, hair or eyes. That quotation is reported through the 2017 retrospective rather than independently verified against the original release.

And it’s not at all unlikely that milady will want tires that enhance her wardrobe, her hair, or even her eyes. Imagine, if you will, one girl telling another: ‘But, my dear, green tires just don’t do a thing for your complexion.’ When that day comes, it will mean a whole new frontier for the tire designer.”
What the Golden Sahara II demonstrated—and what it did not
The Golden Sahara II gave the illuminated tire concept a striking public setting. Goodyear’s account of the 2019 restoration and Geneva presentation shows how the idea could live on as a showpiece, even though the tires were not established as a retail product.

Goodyear framed the collaboration as an early step toward future mobility. That context explains the experimental ambition, but the available sources do not provide original test records or evidence that the tire delivered a measurable safety improvement. Electronic Design’s 2026 retrospective adds claims about heat, wear, traction, fragile lighting and wiring, grime, and maintenance; those remain secondary reporting, not a Goodyear engineering test report.
