George Russell is reportedly not using a cooling vest because Mercedes did not invest in developing a sufficiently robust system for the event—not because the team is confirmed to have banned him from wearing an available vest. The reported tradeoff was engineering resource and spending that Mercedes could otherwise put toward car performance. The reported low-60°C reading was the track temperature during FP2, not a confirmed cockpit measurement.
Why isn’t George Russell wearing a cooling vest?
In reporting published on 3 October 2026, Motorsport.com said Mercedes had not invested in making a cooling-vest system robust enough for Russell to use at the Malaysia-hosted Bahrain Grand Prix. The article described a development tradeoff: resources spent on the system would come at a cost to car performance while the team was operating under the cost cap. It also reported a seven-component Mercedes upgrade package; that detail is the outlet’s account, not an FIA statistic.

Autosport reported a compatible explanation, quoting Russell as saying to The Times: “We won’t be running the cooling vest because we haven’t put the resource into making it robust enough,” and describing development expense as coming at the cost of performance.

Was the cockpit really 60°C?
The low-60°C figure in the event coverage refers to track temperature during Friday’s FP2, according to Motorsport.com. It is not a reported cockpit measurement. Russell did discuss cockpits approaching 60°C in remarks about hot races at the 2025 Miami Grand Prix, but those comments are historical context, not evidence of the temperature in his car at this event. The FIA’s transcript of that 2025 press conference records those earlier remarks.
What does the FIA’s 2026 cooling-system rule require?
The FIA’s current listed 2026 Section C Technical Regulations, Issue 20, define a driver-cooling system as one whose sole purpose is to provide additional cooling for the driver. Article C14.6 sets technical requirements for a race or sprint in which a heat hazard is declared; the rule alone does not confirm that a heat hazard was declared for this event.

These are requirements for an F1 driver-cooling system, not specifications for consumer cooling vests. Article C14.6 also governs where system parts may be installed, subject to FIA approval, and allows specific cooling fans. The current Issue 20 is dated 5 August 2026 and was listed by the FIA as published on 1 October 2026; the FIA’s regulations index lists the current issue. Why isn’t a cooling vest a simple plug-in solution?
The story concerns a bespoke, car-integrated system subject to reliability, packaging and performance tradeoffs—not a consumer vest that can simply be substituted. Robustness matters in a system intended to work through a race, and driver comfort and perceived effectiveness matter too. Autosport reported that the vest remained optional after drivers raised concerns about comfort and effectiveness. Past feedback has included the possibility that a vest can become warm or less useful, and a driver may choose not to use it. Russell has acknowledged both sides, saying, “When it works, it works great,” and, “Because we should all be wearing it.”

So there are two different questions: whether a team has developed a reliable, usable system for its car, and whether a driver chooses to wear one. The reports explain Mercedes’ reported development choice, but do not show that every team faced identical engineering constraints.
