Electric SUVs often travel fewer miles per kilowatt-hour at sustained highway speeds because they must push through more air, and air resistance rises sharply as speed increases. A tall, broad SUV can face more aerodynamic resistance than a lower-profile vehicle, while extra weight adds energy demand—especially when accelerating. How much range a particular SUV loses depends on its design, speed, weather, climate-control use, load, and route. Its EPA window-sticker range is a combined city-and-highway estimate, not a promise of highway-trip distance.
Why highway speed uses more energy
The air-resistance penalty
At a steady highway speed, an EV continually spends energy overcoming resistance from the air. The faster it moves relative to the air around it, the more energy that task demands. That is why a vehicle can use more energy per mile on a fast, uninterrupted drive than on a slower trip, even when it is not repeatedly accelerating.

Vehicle shape and frontal area affect how much air resistance it encounters. SUVs tend to be taller and may present a larger front-facing area than lower-profile vehicles, so their design can make highway efficiency more challenging. But body style alone does not determine range: SUVs differ in size and aerodynamics, and an efficient SUV may outperform a less efficient car. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) describes the general relationship this way: “Vehicles with a larger footprint are likely to weigh more and have more frontal area, which leads to increased aerodynamic resistance.” That is a trend, not a rule that every SUV has worse range than every sedan.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Speed is important because the vehicle keeps encountering air resistance for every mile it travels. At a higher sustained speed, it must use more energy to overcome that resistance; the exact effect depends on the vehicle and the speed. Wind can also change the conditions the vehicle encounters, which is one reason a result from a particular road test may not carry over exactly to another route. The EPA’s 2025 Automotive Trends Report discusses the connection between vehicle footprint, weight, frontal area, and aerodynamic resistance, but it does not establish one drag figure or percentage loss that applies to all electric SUVs.

Why weight matters, but is not the whole explanation
A heavier vehicle generally needs more energy to move, all else equal. The effect is especially intuitive when accelerating: increasing the speed of more mass takes more energy. At a steady highway speed, aerodynamic drag is central to the explanation because the vehicle must continually overcome it. Weight still contributes to overall energy use, but it should not be treated as the sole or automatic explanation for a highway-range difference.
Regenerative braking can return some energy to the battery when a vehicle slows down. It cannot make stop-and-go driving energy-free: repeated changes in speed involve conversion losses, and regeneration does not cancel the energy continually spent pushing through air at speed. The amount recovered varies; there is no single recovery figure that applies to every SUV or trip.
Why there is no universal highway-range-loss percentage
There is no one percentage that describes how much range every electric SUV loses on the highway. The result depends on the vehicle and the conditions. A higher sustained speed increases the aerodynamic challenge, but the same speed can produce different energy use in vehicles with different shapes, tires, configurations, and powertrains. Weather and the route matter too.

The EPA identifies high speed, aggressive driving, cold temperatures, air conditioning, and heating as factors that can affect EV range. Wind, elevation, passenger and cargo load, and the particular route are also practical considerations when estimating a real trip; their individual effects are not quantified for every model in the EPA materials discussed here. A route with hills, for example, is not interchangeable with a level route, and a test in mild weather does not establish what the same vehicle will use with the cabin heater running in cold weather.

Cold-weather figures need particular care. EPA consumer guidance, accessed in 2026, reports a cited research finding of an average range decrease of about 40% due to cold temperatures and use of heat. This is a reported average, not a forecast for every electric SUV, climate, or journey. It should not be added mechanically to a separate highway-speed estimate as if the effects were known to combine in a fixed way.
What an EPA range figure does—and does not—tell you
How the test is conducted
EPA determines EV range using laboratory dynamometer testing. In the single-cycle approach, a fully charged vehicle is driven repeatedly over a city cycle until depletion, then charged fully again and driven over a highway cycle until depletion. Manufacturers may instead use a multi-cycle procedure that includes city, highway, and constant-speed cycles.
The laboratory results are adjusted to account for real-world factors the test procedures do not represent. EPA says: “The city and highway driving ranges determined from this testing are adjusted to account for real-world factors that are not represented on the laboratory test procedures.” Those factors include air-conditioning use, cold temperatures, and high-speed or aggressive driving.
How the combined label is calculated
For the most common adjustment approach, EPA applies a 0.7 factor to laboratory results, although regulations permit optional approaches. EPA illustrates the adjustment with a 200-mile laboratory highway result: multiplying by 0.7 gives an adjusted highway figure of 140 miles. That example explains the method; it is not a prediction for any particular current EV.

The EPA combined range on a window sticker then weights the adjusted city and highway range values: 55% city and 45% highway. The resulting combined figure is useful for comparing vehicles under a standardized method, but it is not a highway-only rating or a guaranteed distance at a sustained speed. A specific road trip may differ because its speed, temperature, HVAC use, wind, load, and elevation will not match a laboratory test or the assumptions behind the label.
The label remains useful: it gives shoppers a consistent basis for comparing vehicles tested under the EPA process. Its limitation is the question it answers. A combined figure summarizes adjusted city and highway results; it does not say how far a particular SUV will travel at one chosen speed, with a particular number of passengers, on a particular day. If you are planning a trip, treat the label as a starting point and check estimates for the exact vehicle and route rather than interpreting the number as a highway guarantee.
What class-level efficiency figures can—and cannot—show
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) reported the following model-year 2024 ranges, based on EPA combined city-and-highway ratings:
| Vehicle class | Model-year 2024 efficiency range | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Standard 2WD SUVs | 0.97–2.94 miles per kWh | Combined EPA-rating basis; not a highway-only result. The low end was the least efficient EV in DOE’s model-year dataset. |
| Midsize cars | 2.17–4.17 miles per kWh | Combined EPA-rating basis; not a controlled comparison with SUVs at a matched speed and in matched conditions. |
The ranges show that efficiency varies widely within each class. They do not prove that a particular SUV will get less highway range than a particular car: the figures are broad class ranges, not a paired test of comparable vehicles. They also do not isolate highway driving. Use them as context for the spread of combined-rated efficiency, not as a prediction for a road trip.

Efficiency and range are related but are not the same measure. Miles per kilowatt-hour (mi/kWh) describes how far a vehicle travels per unit of energy, while range also depends on how much usable battery energy is available. A larger battery can provide more total range without making the vehicle more efficient per mile. That is why it helps to compare both range and energy use when evaluating vehicles, and to make sure the figures refer to the same rating basis.
How to compare two electric SUVs for a real trip
Start with the exact model year, trim, drivetrain, and wheel-and-tire configuration you are considering. Different configurations can have different ratings, and a class label cannot substitute for the specific vehicle’s figures. Use the EPA combined rating as a standardized baseline, then look for a highway estimate or road test only if its conditions are clearly described.
- Match the measurement basis. Compare EPA combined range with EPA combined range. If using real-world tests, check that the vehicles were driven under comparable speeds and conditions; a combined sticker rating and a sustained-speed trip result are not equivalent measures.
- Look beyond “SUV” or “car.” Consider vehicle shape and frontal area, as well as the specific model’s configuration. A body-style label does not reveal a vehicle’s exact aerodynamic performance.
- Account for the vehicle setup. Check trim, drivetrain, wheels, tires, and battery configuration so you do not mistake a specification difference for a body-style effect.
- Match the trip conditions as closely as possible. Consider planned speed, ambient temperature, heating or air conditioning, wind, elevation, and passenger or cargo load. If a test omits a condition that is important to your trip, treat its result as a less direct guide.
- Read efficiency as well as range. Miles per kilowatt-hour (mi/kWh) describes how far the vehicle travels per unit of energy; kilowatt-hours per 100 miles describes energy use over a fixed distance. These metrics can help separate efficiency from battery capacity: two EVs can have different range because of energy use, battery size, or both.
There is no controlled, fixed-speed comparison here that establishes a numeric highway-range gap between a representative set of electric SUVs and lower-profile EVs. If a precise prediction matters, use a test of the exact model under conditions close to your planned drive rather than applying a generic SUV penalty.

How to set expectations before a highway drive
Use the EPA combined range to understand the standardized comparison, not as the distance you can count on at highway speed. For a trip estimate, begin with the exact vehicle and the route’s expected conditions. A route or charging-stop planner can help organize a journey, but its estimate is only as useful as the vehicle and trip assumptions entered; it does not change the vehicle’s efficiency.

- Expect sustained higher speeds to require more energy per mile than slower travel, with the size of the difference depending on the vehicle and speed.
- Allow for cold conditions and cabin heating rather than treating the EPA combined figure as a guaranteed arrival range.
- Use comparable model-specific information when evaluating a claimed highway range, and check whether the test reports speed, weather, HVAC use, and vehicle configuration.
- Do not assume an aerodynamic accessory or a generic equipment change will recover a specific number of miles. The evidence here does not establish a universal range gain for such add-ons.
A useful estimate is therefore specific rather than categorical: identify the vehicle, use information measured on the same basis, and account for the likely speed and conditions. If two estimates disagree, first check whether they describe the same trim, test method, weather, speed, and climate-control use. A difference between those estimates may reflect the setup as much as the SUV’s body style.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much range does an electric SUV lose on the highway?
There is no universal percentage. Highway energy use depends on sustained speed, aerodynamics, vehicle configuration, weather, HVAC use, and route. Use a test or estimate for the exact vehicle under conditions similar to your trip rather than applying a generic SUV penalty.
Is the EPA range on an electric SUV a highway range?
No. The combined window-sticker range weights adjusted city and highway results 55% and 45%, respectively. It is a standardized comparison figure, not a guarantee of distance at a sustained highway speed.
Do electric SUVs always have less range than electric cars?
No. A larger footprint can mean more weight and frontal area, which may increase aerodynamic resistance, but individual vehicles vary in shape, tires, battery, and powertrain. DOE’s model-year 2024 class ranges use combined ratings and are not a matched highway test of SUVs and cars.
Does cold weather always reduce an electric SUV’s range by 40%?
No. EPA consumer guidance accessed in 2026 reports a cited research finding of an average decrease of about 40% due to cold temperatures and use of heat. It is not a universal or model-specific prediction, and it should not be combined with a highway-speed estimate as a fixed additional loss.
Can a larger battery solve highway efficiency losses?
A larger battery can provide more energy and potentially more total range, but it does not by itself make a vehicle more efficient per mile. Compare both battery-related range and an efficiency metric such as mi/kWh or kWh per 100 miles.
The Bottom Line
Electric SUVs often use more energy per mile at highway speeds because aerodynamic resistance rises as speed increases, and a large footprint can add to that challenge. Weight, weather, HVAC use, and vehicle setup also matter. Treat the EPA combined range as a comparison baseline—not a highway promise—and use model-specific estimates that match your planned speed and conditions.
