If Sonic the Hedgehog is missing from your Tesla’s Arcade list, the most likely explanation is that Tesla removed the title, not that your car or controller is at fault. Tesla listed Sonic in Arcade release notes, and reporting from January 2023 says it was pulled in the 2022 holiday update. The public reason was never clearly explained. A controller can make a listed game playable, but it cannot bring back a game that is no longer in the catalog.
What the record shows about Sonic in Tesla Arcade
The clearest primary record is Tesla’s release notes for software version 2022.28.1. They list Sonic as an Arcade feature for Model 3 and Model Y configurations described as having no data-capable front USB ports. The notes say the feature was available worldwide and give the access path: open Application Launcher > Arcade while the car is in Park. They also state that a game controller plugged into the glovebox USB port is required.
That listing describes what Tesla published for that software release. It is not a guarantee that Sonic was available on every car, in every market, after that date.
Why the title may be gone
A report dated January 5, 2023, from the site Not a Tesla App says Tesla introduced Sonic in its 2021 holiday update and removed it in its 2022 holiday update. The same report says the reason for removal was unclear. The reporting I could find does not establish a licensing dispute, a hardware problem, or a deliberate policy decision, so none of those should be presented as the cause.

A second report relays a user’s account of a Tesla Service interaction, in which the removal was described as a “temporary suspension” and the game was said to be returning. That is a secondhand account of a conversation, not an official public statement from Tesla, and it has not been confirmed by any later Tesla announcement that I could find. Treat it as an unverified claim, not a promise.
Why your car’s configuration and region matter
The Model Y Owner’s Manual says Entertainment features, including games, may be unavailable depending on vehicle configuration or market region. Arcade is therefore not a fixed list that every Tesla receives in the same way. Two cars on the same software version can show different Arcade catalogs.

When you check, record these details first:
- Model and model year
- Market or country where the car was delivered and is registered
- Software version, shown in the touchscreen’s Software settings
- Whether the car has data-capable front USB ports, since the 2022.28.1 Sonic listing applied to cars without them
What a controller does and does not fix
Game controllers solve an input problem. The Model 3 Owner’s Manual describes pairing Bluetooth Classic game controllers, and the Model Y manual notes that some games use steering-wheel buttons while others need a USB controller. If Sonic appears in Arcade but does not respond, the controller and its connection are the right things to check.
If Sonic does not appear in Arcade at all, a controller will not change that. Buying one, or installing a newer software update, will not necessarily bring back a title that has been removed from the catalog.

Checking whether Sonic is on your car
- Park the car. Arcade is only available while in Park.
- On the touchscreen, open Application Launcher, then select Arcade.
- Scan the list for Sonic. If it is listed, go to step 4. If it is not, the title is absent from your car’s catalog.
- If Sonic is listed but does not respond, connect a compatible game controller to the glovebox USB port if your car’s configuration calls for it, and check your owner’s manual for that model’s input requirements.
- If Sonic is absent, check your car’s model, year, market, and software version against the points above. Those details matter if you contact Tesla support or compare with other owners.
The Steam alternative is a different game
The same January 2023 report mentions Sonic the Hedgehog 1, part of Sonic Origins, available through Steam on some Model S and Model X vehicles with Steam integration. That is a separate game from the Tesla Arcade Sonic title, and it is limited to specific vehicles. Do not describe it as a restored version of the Arcade game. Confirm that your specific car supports Steam before trying to use it.

If Sonic is missing from your Arcade list, the evidence points to a removal in the 2022 holiday update, with no clearly published reason. A controller will fix input problems but not a missing listing. The most recent reporting on this point is from January 2023, so check the current Arcade list on your own car, and if you want a firm answer, ask Tesla support in writing and keep a record of the reply.
