Fewer lease maturities add to the constraint, and the squeeze is sharpest among lower-priced vehicles. That does not mean every used-car lot is empty or that prices must keep rising.
How lower new-car production leads to fewer used cars later
The shortage has a delayed, pipeline effect. Many of the vehicles shoppers would buy used today were originally sold new several years ago. When production fell during the pandemic disruption, fewer vehicles entered those earlier model-year cohorts. A car that was never built cannot later be sold as a used car, traded in, or returned at the end of a lease.

Cox Automotive cited lower pandemic-era production as a reason used-vehicle supply remained constrained in its 2025 outlook and again in its January 2026 forecast. The effect unfolds over time: the production drop does not remove every car from today’s market at once, but it leaves fewer vehicles feeding the used market as those cohorts age.
Why lease returns matter
Lease maturities are a predictable source of relatively recent used vehicles. When fewer leases end, fewer cars return to dealerships and wholesale channels for resale. Cox Automotive identified fewer lease maturities returning as another supply constraint in its 2026 forecast, while expecting lease maturities to rise over the year. That gradual increase could add supply, but it does not establish that the market will quickly return to a previous baseline.

Why affordable used cars can be hardest to find
Supply is not equally tight at every price. In data reported by Manheim, vAuto Live Market View showed 33 days’ supply for vehicles priced below $10,000 in May 2026, the lowest among the price segments cited. Manheim described its own sub-$10,000 wholesale inventory as primarily vehicles 7 to 15 years old. The 33-day figure is a retail days’-supply measure; it should not be confused with Manheim’s wholesale activity.
Manheim also reported that its marketplace handled an average of approximately 150,000 sub-$10,000 wholesale transactions per month during 2025, and that more than half of vehicles sold through Manheim in 2025 were priced below $20,000. Those figures show that lower-priced vehicles remain an important part of that wholesale marketplace; they are not counts of cars currently available to retail shoppers across the country.

Why the market can feel tighter at certain times
Seasonal demand can intensify a structural shortage. Cox Automotive reported that inventory fell during the usual spring sales “bounce” and tax-refund season in late March 2025, when stronger sales put pressure on available stock. A seasonal dip is different from the longer-term effect of fewer vehicles entering the used-car pipeline.

Local conditions also vary by price band and channel. A national or wholesale indicator may not describe the selection a shopper sees at a particular dealer, while a low-price segment can be tighter than the market overall.

Does short supply mean used-car prices will keep rising?
No. Supply and price are related, but they are different measures, and a constrained market does not mechanically produce ever-rising prices. Cox Automotive reported that the Manheim Used Vehicle Value Index rose 0.4% year over year in December 2025 and described the wholesale market as largely stabilized at year end, even as it forecast constrained supply for 2026.
The Manheim index tracks wholesale vehicle values, not the number of cars listed for retail sale. Likewise, the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ used-cars-and-trucks CPI covers vehicles two to seven years old and follows a defined pricing and trade-in methodology; it is not a census of dealer inventory. Price indexes, retail days’ supply, and wholesale transaction counts answer different questions and should not be treated as interchangeable.

How long will the shortage last?
The available figures do not establish a date when used-car supply will return to a pre-pandemic baseline, nor do they quantify the total number of vehicles lost to the production shortfall. Rising lease maturities in 2026 may help replenish supply, but the timing and extent of any broader normalization are not established by these figures.
For shoppers, the practical implication is to assess a specific car rather than assume every vehicle is scarce or a good buy. Check its history and arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection; these steps help evaluate an individual vehicle, but they do not increase overall supply.
