Some model-year 2026 Volvo EX90 and ES90 vehicles are being produced without LiDAR. Volvo attributes the change to limited hardware supply and says the vehicles still meet its safety standards. Separately, LiDAR supplier Luminar has described a shift toward optional fitment and a commercial dispute with Volvo. A reported phone-camera incident has also circulated online, but it does not establish that the system generally damages phones or is unsafe.
Do 2026 Volvo EX90 and ES90 vehicles have LiDAR?
Not all of them. Volvo says it began producing model-year 2026 EX90 and ES90 vehicles without LiDAR in 2025. The company’s US support page says these models had previously been available only with the sensor and that customers with ongoing orders affected by the change would be contacted directly. The specific equipment on a vehicle therefore depends on its configuration; check the individual vehicle rather than assuming every 2026 EX90 or ES90 has LiDAR.
Volvo’s explanation is limited hardware supply, alongside customer demand. Its US support information, updated November 11, 2025, says the versions without LiDAR still meet Volvo’s safety standards and provide a high level of driver support using the vehicle’s core computing and other sensors. That is Volvo’s stated position, not an independent comparison showing that equipped and unequipped vehicles perform identically in every safety scenario.

Luminar’s account: optional equipment and a deferred decision
Luminar, which supplies the Iris LiDAR system, described a broader change in an October 31, 2025 SEC filing. Luminar said Volvo informed it that Iris would cease to be standard on the EX90 and ES90 beginning in April 2026, while remaining an option. Luminar also said Volvo deferred a decision about LiDAR for its next generation of vehicles—including Luminar’s Halo system, which was under development—from 2027 to 2029 at the earliest. What is the dispute between Volvo and Luminar?
In a February 25, 2026 SEC filing, Luminar characterized its relationship with Volvo as a dispute and described a notice Volvo purportedly sent to terminate an agreement, as well as Luminar’s own claims. Those statements come from a party to the commercial disagreement. The supply explanation from Volvo and Luminar’s account of changing fitment and a dispute are related context, but they are not interchangeable claims. Volvo’s support page gives its customer-facing reason for producing vehicles without the sensor; Luminar’s filings describe the supplier’s view of the commercial relationship.
Are EX90s and ES90s without LiDAR still safe?
Volvo says they meet its safety standards and continue to provide driver support through their computing platform and remaining sensors. The available statements do not establish that LiDAR-free vehicles have the same capabilities in every condition as versions equipped with LiDAR, nor do they provide an independent, head-to-head safety assessment. Buyers comparing two vehicles should confirm the equipment on each specific car and consult Volvo for details about its driver-support features.

Can an EX90 LiDAR damage a phone camera?
A Reddit discussion dated September 2, 2025 circulated footage described by posters as showing an EX90’s LiDAR affecting a phone-camera image. The discussion included competing explanations and unverified claims about lasting damage, optics, sensor response, and software behavior. It is evidence that a controversy circulated, not a controlled technical test or a manufacturer, regulator, or standards-body finding. The Reddit discussion
The available account does not independently confirm the camera’s condition afterward or explain the mechanism. A visible image artifact does not by itself prove permanent camera damage, and it is not evidence of eye injury. The incident therefore does not support a general claim that ordinary phone use near a Volvo causes damage or that LiDAR is generally unsafe.

- Confirm whether the particular model-year 2026 EX90 or ES90 has LiDAR; model name and year alone do not settle its equipment.
- Ask Volvo or the seller which driver-support features are available on that exact vehicle and whether any equipment change affects the configuration you are considering.
