Valeo acquired Connaught Electronics Ltd. (CEL), an Irish automotive electronics developer based in Tuam, in 2007. The deal added camera-based vision technology for low-speed maneuvering—such as parking and other close-quarters driving—to Valeo’s portfolio.
What did Connaught Electronics develop?
CEL worked on automotive electronics in two main areas, according to Embedded.com’s 2007 acquisition report:
- Camera applications: systems for driver-assistance functions, including camera-based vision for low-speed maneuvering. In everyday terms, that means helping a driver see around the vehicle while parking or moving in tight spaces; the report does not identify a specific consumer camera product.
- Radio-frequency applications: electronics for remote vehicle access and security.
Valeo’s stated rationale was to extend its camera-based vision solutions. CEL’s other electronics work also broadened the capabilities the Irish developer brought to the acquisition.
How large was CEL when Valeo acquired it?
Embedded.com reported that CEL had nearly 300 employees across Tuam, Ireland, and Humpolec, Czech Republic, and annual sales of €37 million in 2007. The same report said Valeo expected the new division to double sales by 2010. That was a forecast at the time; the available sources do not establish whether it was achieved.

The sources do not state the purchase price, exact signing or closing date, legal structure, or detailed integration timeline for the CEL transaction.
What is CEL’s continuing role in Valeo?
Valeo says CEL was established in 1982 and acquired by Valeo in 2007. Its Ireland profile describes Tuam as a worldwide reference center for vision systems and an R&D center of excellence. That links the company’s original camera expertise with Valeo’s continuing vision-systems work in Ireland.

Which Valeo acquisition should not be confused with CEL?
Valeo’s 2022 purchase of Siemens’ 50% stake in Valeo Siemens eAutomotive was a separate transaction. Valeo announced a €277 million cash amount on a debt-free basis for that stake; it is not the CEL purchase price. The announcement describes the Siemens eAutomotive transaction, not the earlier acquisition of the Irish developer: Valeo’s February 9, 2022 announcement.
