Which Vehicles Qualified for the Federal EV Tax Credit in July 2024?

In July 2024, qualifying new EVs, plug-in hybrids, and fuel-cell vehicles could receive up to $7,500—but eligibility depended on the exact vehicle, buyer, and sale.

In July 2024, qualifying new battery-electric, plug-in hybrid, and fuel-cell vehicles could be eligible for the federal New Clean Vehicle Credit, worth up to $7,500. Eligibility depended on the specific vehicle and buyer—not just the make and model. The complete July 2024 model-and-trim roster cannot be reliably reconstructed from the official dynamic list available now, so this guide explains how to check a particular vehicle without presenting an incomplete list as exhaustive.

How to check whether a vehicle qualified in July 2024

  1. Find the candidate vehicle. The IRS directed shoppers to the Department of Energy’s FuelEconomy.gov list of potentially eligible vehicles. That list covered battery-electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, and fuel-cell vehicles whose manufacturers indicated they met the requirements.
  2. Confirm the exact vehicle at the time of purchase. The IRS said final confirmation should be made for the specific VIN in IRS Energy Credits Online. A model appearing on FuelEconomy.gov did not by itself establish that every trim or VIN qualified. The IRS Topic A FAQ, updated July 26, 2024, said: “Final confirmation of vehicle qualification should be done in IRS Energy Credits Online at time of purchase.”
  3. Check the buyer and sale requirements. Vehicle eligibility was only one part of the test; the buyer, MSRP, and seller’s reporting also mattered.

The official FuelEconomy.gov roster is dynamic, and a dated July 2024 copy of the complete model-and-trim list is not available here. That means it is not possible to give a reliable, exhaustive roll call of vehicles from that month. Do not treat today’s list as the July 2024 roster.

Which kinds of vehicles could qualify?

The 2024 credit covered qualifying new battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and fuel-cell vehicles. Under the IRS’s 2024 criteria, a vehicle also had to have a battery capacity of at least 7 kWh, a gross vehicle weight rating below 14,000 pounds, a qualified manufacturer, and final assembly in North America. Applicable critical-mineral and battery-component requirements also applied, and the seller had to report the required sale information to the IRS.

How much was the credit?

For a qualifying vehicle placed in service on or after April 18, 2023, the maximum credit was $7,500. It consisted of two separate $3,750 portions: one for meeting the critical-mineral requirement and one for meeting the battery-component requirement. A vehicle meeting only one requirement could qualify for $3,750; meeting neither meant no credit under this structure. Inclusion on the candidate list did not guarantee the full amount.

What MSRP limit applied?

The 2024 MSRP ceiling depended on the vehicle’s classification for fuel-economy purposes, not simply the name used in advertising. The IRS said to use the classification on the fuel-economy label or the EPA size class shown on FuelEconomy.gov.

Vehicle classification Maximum MSRP
SUV, van, or pickup truck $80,000
Other vehicle $55,000

For the ceiling, MSRP included the manufacturer’s suggested prices for accessories and options physically attached to the vehicle when delivered to the dealer. It did not include destination charges, dealer-added options, taxes, fees, or the negotiated sale price.

Classification could change which ceiling applied. The IRS cited the 2023 Cadillac Lyriq, 2022–2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E, certain 2022–2023 Tesla Model Y variants, certain 2022–2023 Volkswagen ID.4 variants, and the 2022–2023 Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid as examples of vehicles reclassified as SUVs for credit purposes. These examples illustrate the classification rule; they are not a complete eligibility list and do not establish that every cited version qualified.

Which buyer rules applied?

The credit was for a buyer purchasing a new vehicle for personal use, not resale, and using it primarily in the United States. The buyer’s modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) could not exceed the applicable limit below. Under the IRS’s 2024 guidance, a buyer could use MAGI for the delivery year or the preceding year, whichever was lower.

How did buyers claim the credit?

For a 2024 sale, the buyer could transfer the credit to a registered dealer at the time of sale or claim it on a tax return. For a return claim, the IRS instructed buyers to retain the seller’s time-of-sale report and include the vehicle’s VIN when filing Form 8936.

For sales in 2024, the seller was required to submit the time-of-sale report through IRS Energy Credits Online within three calendar days. The seller also had to give the buyer the report and submission confirmation. Buyers should keep those records and verify that the filing was completed.

Is the federal EV credit still available?

No. The July 2024 rules are historical. The IRS now says the new, used, and commercial clean vehicle credits are unavailable for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. That later end date does not change what the July 2024 eligibility rules were, but it means a July 2024 list should not be read as a current incentive list.
