To improve an electric SUV’s highway range, drive at a moderate, steady speed within legal and safe limits, accelerate smoothly, remove unnecessary cargo, and use cabin heating or cooling thoughtfully. Higher speeds increase aerodynamic drag, while extreme temperatures, heavy loads, and hills can raise energy use. The best regenerative-braking or drive mode depends on the vehicle; maximum regeneration is not proven to improve steady highway range in every SUV.
Which driving choices matter most on the highway?
Choose a steady, moderate speed
Speed is one of the clearest range levers because aerodynamic drag grows as a vehicle moves faster. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center explains that highway travel typically requires more energy to overcome drag at higher speeds. Reducing speed when safe and legal, and maintaining a consistent pace, can help conserve energy. Follow posted limits and adapt to traffic, weather, and road conditions rather than treating range as a reason to drive unsafely.

A DOE comparison reported that light-duty vehicles had about 27% lower fuel economy at 80 mph than at 60 mph. That comparison covered 74 vehicles from model years 2003–2012 across vehicle classes and powertrains; it is not an electric-SUV test. It illustrates the broad effect speed can have, but it does not mean slowing an electric SUV from 80 to 60 mph will add 27% range. DOE fuel-economy driving tips provide the underlying context.

For a particular trip, think of speed as a trade-off: a faster pace can use energy more quickly, while choosing a slower but still safe and legal pace may help conserve it. DOE’s published comparison does not supply a universal “best” highway speed for every SUV or a miles-added estimate for reducing speed by a set amount. Traffic, weather, the route, and the vehicle all matter, so the broad DOE comparison should be treated as context rather than a range calculator.

Accelerate gently and anticipate traffic
Rapid acceleration uses more energy than gradual acceleration, according to the DOE Alternative Fuels Data Center’s electric-vehicle guidance. Ease into acceleration and look ahead so you can respond to slowing traffic without repeated hard acceleration and braking. The aim is smooth, predictable driving—not avoiding necessary braking or compromising safe control.
This advice applies to how you drive, not just to a button or menu setting. If traffic is slowing, anticipating it can help avoid an unnecessary hard burst of acceleration followed immediately by braking. Do not attempt to coast through a situation that requires slowing down, and do not make abrupt maneuvers to preserve energy. Safe control and the traffic conditions take priority.
How should you use climate control?
Heating and air conditioning draw energy from the vehicle, and their effect can be more noticeable in very hot or cold weather. Use a comfortable cabin setting rather than running heating or cooling harder than needed. If the vehicle offers seat or steering-wheel heating, consult its manual for how those features work; their availability and energy use vary by model, so they should not be assumed to be a universal range-saving substitute.
No DOE guidance cited here identifies a single climate-control setting or temperature as best for every SUV. The practical advice is to avoid using more heating or cooling than you need while keeping the cabin comfortable. Extreme outside temperatures can also affect range, so a climate adjustment cannot guarantee a particular result on a given trip.
Some electric SUVs use a heat pump. DOE says a heat pump warms the cabin much more efficiently than an electric resistance heater in most conditions, but not every SUV has one. Check the specifications or owner’s manual for your exact model year and trim. DOE’s winter EV guidance explains the distinction.

Do not assume that a particular SUV has a heat pump because it is electric, or that an instruction for one model applies to another. The make, model, year, trim, and market determine which climate features are available. The cited DOE guidance does not confirm an exact preconditioning procedure or quantify how many miles a heat pump or climate adjustment adds, so check the vehicle’s own information rather than relying on a universal estimate.
Does regenerative braking help at highway speed?
Regenerative braking recovers some energy when the vehicle slows, but it does not create free energy: slowing down still means giving up forward momentum, and recovery is not complete. The DOE notes that city driving has frequent stops that maximize regeneration’s benefits, while highway travel typically requires more energy to overcome drag at higher speeds.
Recommended Free Tools
That distinction matters when choosing a setting. Regeneration can recover energy during deceleration, but it does not cancel the energy used to maintain highway speed or make repeated acceleration and braking cost-free. Highway trips with fewer stops do not present the same frequent opportunities for recovery as city driving. DOE’s cited guidance does not establish that one regeneration level is the most efficient choice for all highway situations.
Regeneration settings and their behavior differ by vehicle. The available evidence does not establish that selecting maximum regeneration improves steady highway range for every electric SUV. Use the mode described in your owner’s manual, especially if a setting changes how the accelerator responds or how the vehicle slows when you lift off. A predictable setting that lets you drive smoothly is more useful than assuming a particular level is universally most efficient. See the DOE AFDC guidance for its discussion of regenerative braking.
In other words, “Should I use regenerative braking on the highway?” cannot be answered with a universal maximum-or-minimum setting. Check what the mode actually does in your SUV and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. There is no model-specific mode comparison here, and no basis for ranking unnamed settings or claiming that a high setting adds a fixed amount of range.

What about cargo, hills, and route conditions?
Extra weight can reduce range, so remove cargo you do not need for the trip. Significant inclines also increase energy demand; plan an additional reserve for hilly routes or a heavily loaded SUV. There is no verified universal roof-cargo penalty for electric SUVs here, so avoid relying on a single percentage for roof boxes or other loads.
These factors are reasons to be more conservative about the trip’s available range, not a formula for calculating the exact penalty. A heavy load and a route with significant inclines can both raise energy use, but the cited DOE information provides no universal figure for either one. It also does not quantify a roof box or other specific cargo configuration. Remove unnecessary items where practical, and leave extra reserve when the route or load calls for it.
Range also varies substantially among vehicles. For model-year 2024 standard SUVs with 2WD, DOE reported 0.97 to 2.94 miles per kWh based on EPA combined city/highway ratings. Those figures show variation between vehicles; they are neither highway-only results nor an estimate of how much a setting will improve a particular SUV. DOE’s vehicle fuel-economy data is the source for the reported comparison.
The miles-per-kWh range is a vehicle comparison, not a setting comparison: it should not be used to predict what changing climate control or regeneration will do in your own SUV. It also combines city and highway ratings rather than isolating highway driving. Use the exact vehicle’s information for vehicle-to-vehicle comparisons, and do not treat broad figures as a promise about one trip.
How to apply the advice to your SUV
- Check the correct manual. Use the owner’s manual for your make, model, model year, trim, and market. Confirm the names and intended behavior of drive modes, regeneration settings, and climate features; exact menu labels and availability vary.
- Set a safe, steady pace. Choose a speed appropriate to the posted limit, conditions, and traffic, and avoid unnecessary speed changes.
- Drive smoothly. Accelerate gradually and anticipate traffic so you can avoid abrupt bursts of acceleration when conditions allow.
- Use climate control deliberately. Set a comfortable temperature and verify whether your SUV has a heat pump before assuming it does.
- Reduce avoidable load. Remove unneeded cargo and account for hills or a heavy load when deciding how much range reserve to keep.
- Use vehicle-specific modes as instructed. Do not assume maximum regeneration or any unnamed “eco” setting is best for every highway trip; follow the manufacturer’s guidance.
These are behavior and vehicle-setting choices, rather than a required purchase list. No product or accessory is necessary to carry out the supported advice, and the cited information establishes no product-specific benefit or cost. Since the vehicle has not been identified, there is also no verified model-specific menu path, mode name, or trim-specific feature list to provide.

How much range can these settings add?
No model-specific electric-SUV highway test cited here quantifies the miles or percentage gained from any one setting. The amount depends on the SUV, speed, weather, terrain, load, and driving pattern. Treat the speed comparison above as general light-duty-vehicle evidence, not a promise for your vehicle. For a useful estimate, compare trips in similar conditions using your own SUV’s energy-use display, while remembering that changing weather, traffic, and route can make one-to-one comparisons unreliable.
There is no universal menu path or setting list for an unspecified SUV. Exact controls, heat-pump availability, and any manufacturer-recommended highway mode must be verified in the manual for the vehicle’s model year and trim. Software version and market can also affect which information or features apply, so use the vehicle documentation that matches your own SUV rather than instructions for a similar-looking model.

Does turning down the climate control help EV range?
Using less heating or cooling than necessary can reduce the energy spent on cabin comfort, particularly in temperature extremes, but the effect varies by vehicle and conditions. Keep the cabin comfortable, and check whether your SUV uses a heat pump; DOE says heat pumps warm the cabin more efficiently than resistance heaters in most conditions.
Should I use regenerative braking on the highway?
Use the setting described in your SUV’s manual. Regeneration recovers some energy when the vehicle slows, and city driving with frequent stops tends to make more use of that benefit. The evidence does not show that maximum regeneration is best for steady highway driving in every electric SUV.
How much does highway speed affect electric-car range?
Higher speed raises the energy needed to overcome aerodynamic drag. DOE reported about 27% lower fuel economy at 80 mph than at 60 mph for a mixed group of 74 light-duty vehicles from model years 2003–2012. That is not an EV-SUV-specific estimate or a promise of a 27% range increase from slowing down.
