The electric car in the headline was the Chevrolet Bolt EV. The comparison appeared in a March 21, 2017, Futurism article, which framed the Bolt as a more affordable alternative to Tesla’s then-upcoming Model 3. Its price and range claims describe that period—not a new 2026 model or today’s buying options.
Which car did the 2017 headline mean?
It meant the Chevrolet Bolt EV, a compact electric hatchback. Chelsea Gohd’s Futurism article, published March 21, 2017, compared it with Tesla’s Model 3 on price and driving range. Futurism’s 2017 article
The headline is historical: it does not refer to a newly announced 2026 electric car. The story’s central point was that an electric car with substantial range and a lower effective price could challenge Tesla’s appeal.
What did the original comparison claim?
Futurism reported that the Bolt cost around $30,000 after tax credits and could travel more than 200 miles (about 320 km) on a charge. It also described 0–60 mph acceleration as just over six seconds. Those are claims from the 2017 article, not verified current prices or specifications. Futurism’s 2017 article

A November 2016 article from McCluskey Chevrolet gave the 2017 Bolt an EPA-estimated range of 238 miles and a starting MSRP of $37,495 before government incentives. That period-specific MSRP and the later article’s approximate after-credit price use different bases, so they should not be treated as directly interchangeable figures. How close were the Bolt and Model 3 as alternatives?
They competed for attention among electric-car shoppers, but they were not the same kind of vehicle. McCluskey Chevrolet characterized the Bolt as a subcompact hatchback and the Model 3 as a compact luxury sedan. Body style, market positioning, and the way each car serves its occupants matter alongside range and price. McCluskey Chevrolet’s 2016 article

That distinction is useful when reading the old comparison: “giving Tesla a run for its money” described a competitive challenge, not proof that the two vehicles were equivalent in every respect or that one had overtaken the other in sales.
What changed in later Bolt specifications?
Chevrolet’s specification sheet for the 2023 Bolt EV lists 259 miles of EPA-estimated range, a 200-horsepower motor, up to 57 cubic feet of cargo room with the rear seat folded, and an approximately seven-hour full-charge estimate on 240-volt power. These are manufacturer figures for the 2023 model year; the range is an estimate, not a promise of what a driver will achieve in all conditions. They should not be substituted for the 2017 figures. What do Bolt sales figures establish?
General Motors reported 62,045 U.S. deliveries in 2023 for the Bolt EV and Bolt EUV combined, up from 38,120 combined deliveries in 2022—a reported increase of 62.8%. This is a combined figure for two models in one calendar year, not a Bolt EV-only total, a comparison with Tesla sales, or evidence of new-car availability in 2026. General Motors’ 2024 sales report

No current availability conclusion follows from the 2017 article, the 2023 specification sheet, or GM’s report of 2023 deliveries. Those records establish historical claims and specifications, not whether a Bolt EV or successor is available to buy new in 2026. Check Chevrolet’s current model information and local dealers before treating the Bolt as a current new-car option.
