Only two examples in the available evidence clearly qualify as discontinued cars that returned as production electric vehicles: Renault 5 E-Tech electric and GMC HUMMER EV. Several other automakers have announced future electric models or created heritage concepts inspired by older cars, but those are not the same as a production comeback. Here is what has actually returned—and what remains a plan or design exercise.
What counts as a car returning as an EV?
A nameplate can “return” in different ways: a new production model can revive a discontinued car, an automaker can announce a future electric successor, or a one-off concept or restomod can reinterpret a classic. Those categories should not be confused. This roundup covers the examples supported by automaker announcements, with each model’s status made explicit. It does not establish ten discontinued nameplates that have returned as production EVs.
Production EVs that revived older names
Renault 5 E-Tech electric
Renault presents the 5 E-Tech electric as the modern electric return of the Renault 5, first launched in 1972. The company scheduled the new model’s European launch for September 2024. Renault claimed a maximum range of up to 400 km on the WLTP cycle and described AC and DC charging capability in its 2024 launch release; that range is a manufacturer figure, not an independent test result.
The electric powertrain is not entirely new to the Renault 5 name: Renault notes that an electric version of the original existed as early as 1974. The modern car is therefore a production revival of the model with a new electric design, rather than the name’s first encounter with battery power.

GMC HUMMER EV
GMC says it announced HUMMER’s all-electric return in 2020. The production lineup includes a pickup and an SUV, with production and deliveries beginning across 2021–2023, according to the company’s 2026 announcement. The brand’s 2027 model-year information describes both body styles, NACS charging inlets, and available vehicle-to-home capability. These are GMC’s stated model details, not an independent assessment; availability and specifications can vary by model year and market.
Announced electric revivals that are not yet established production cars
Renault 5 Turbo 3E
The Renault 5 Turbo 3E is an electric reboot of the Renault 5 Turbo and Turbo 2, but Renault’s announcement describes a planned showroom arrival in 2027, not a completed launch. The company announced a limited run of 1,980 units. Both the timing and production quantity are plans, as set out in Renault’s 2025 announcement.

Citroën 2 CV-inspired electric model
Citroën confirmed in May 2026 that it is developing a future electric model inspired by the 2 CV. Its announcement said further details would be revealed at the Paris Motor Show in October 2026. It does not establish that a production vehicle has launched. Citroën CEO Xavier Chardon said, “The return of the 2 CV is not simply the return of a legendary name.” The distinction matters: the announcement promises inspiration from the historic car, not necessarily a direct production revival. Volkswagen ID. Polo
Volkswagen plans to bring the established Polo name into its electric ID. family, with the ID. Polo launch planned from 2026 in the automaker’s 2025 announcement. That is a planned timing, not evidence here of a completed launch. Volkswagen also says conventional-drive Polo models will continue in parallel, so the nameplate is not globally defunct. Brand CEO Thomas Schäfer called the ID. Polo “just the beginning.”

Electric heritage projects, concepts, and restomods
Hyundai Heritage Series PONY
Hyundai presented the Heritage Series PONY in 2021 as an electric reimagining of an actual first-generation Pony. It is a heritage project, not evidence of a new production Pony EV. Hyundai Motor Europe also notes that the Pony Coupe concept influenced later designs, including the IONIQ 5. Details are on Hyundai’s Heritage Series page.
Renault 8 Gordini Concept
Renault’s September 2026 electric two-seat coupé concept revisits the Renault 8 Gordini, but Renault expressly describes it as a unique design exercise that will not be sold. It is a concept, not a revived production car. The status is clear in Renault’s announcement.

Opel Manta GSe ElektroMOD
The Manta GSe ElektroMOD is a battery-electric restomod inspired by the Manta A. Opel’s 2021 description says the original engine was replaced with an electric motor; it does not describe a mass-market production Manta EV. Opel Global Brand Design Manager Pierre-Olivier Garcia said the project was intended to “build[] a bridge from the great Opel tradition to a very desirable sustainable future.” That design ambition does not change its restomod status. Which revived electric cars are actually on sale?
Among the examples covered here, Renault 5 E-Tech electric and GMC HUMMER EV are the clearest production returns. Renault’s material concerns Europe; GMC’s cited 2027 information concerns the United States and Canada. The sources do not provide comparable current prices, independent range tests, or a complete market-by-market availability picture, so a buying comparison should be made for the specific model year and country rather than inferred from the heritage connection alone.

For a useful comparison, first confirm that both vehicles are production models available in the same market. Then compare body style and intended use, same-market pricing, range measured on the same test cycle, charging capability, and how closely each new vehicle carries forward the original’s name or design. A restomod or concept is not a like-for-like alternative to a newly engineered production EV.
