No current comparison in the available data can name a single car engine as the longest-lasting. The strongest recent evidence ranks whole vehicles, not engine codes: in iSeeCars’ 2026 study, the Toyota Sequoia had the highest estimated chance of reaching 250,000 miles, followed by the Lexus LS and Toyota 4Runner. Those results are useful when choosing a vehicle, but they do not prove that a specific engine caused its longevity.
What the longevity rankings actually measure
Published September 15, 2026, the iSeeCars 2026 Longest Lasting Cars study analyzed data from more than 395 million vehicles. It estimates each model’s probability of reaching 250,000 miles or more using average odometer readings by vehicle age and a proprietary model.
That is a model-level estimate based on observed mileage patterns—not a controlled engine-failure study. It does not identify engine codes or isolate engine problems from transmission failures, corrosion, electrical faults, maintenance, or how vehicles are used. The study excludes heavy-duty vehicles from its overall rankings, as well as models with insufficient data and those discontinued as of model year 2022; heavy-duty trucks are covered in a separate truck analysis.
Which vehicles lead the 250,000-mile estimates?
The following figures are iSeeCars’ 2026 estimated probabilities of reaching at least 250,000 miles. They compare whole vehicle models, not engines.

For context, iSeeCars estimated that the average vehicle in its study had a 5.4% chance of reaching 250,000 miles. Its brand-level estimate for Toyota was 19.7%; that is a figure for Toyota vehicles as a brand, not an engine reliability score. These probabilities are estimates, not guarantees for an individual vehicle.
Why a vehicle ranking cannot identify a durable engine
A model’s high-mileage record may reflect several things working together: its engine, transmission and other components, owner maintenance, driving conditions, and the population of vehicles represented in the data. The 2026 study does not separate those influences or compare specific engine variants. A high-ranking Sequoia, LS, or 4Runner therefore cannot establish that every engine offered in that model—or one engine in particular—is responsible for the result.

A separate iSeeCars lifespan analysis examined more than two million cars produced and sold for at least 10 of the past 20 model years, ranking vehicles by mileage-achieving examples. It lists potential-lifespan figures of 296,509 miles for the Toyota Sequoia, 280,236 for the Land Cruiser, 265,732 for the Chevrolet Suburban, and 256,022 for the Toyota Tundra. Those figures come from a different analysis and measure than the 2026 probabilities; they should not be combined or treated as engine-specific results.
What manufacturers’ durability targets mean
In a 2026 Ford From the Road article, Ford’s vice president of Vehicle Hardware Engineering describes a company design aim for powertrains to meet a minimum of 15 years or 225,000 miles, with consistent and reliable operation through that period. This is Ford’s stated design target, not independent evidence that every Ford engine or vehicle reaches it, nor a measured fleet failure rate.

How to use longevity data when buying a used car
Use the rankings to identify models worth investigating, then evaluate the exact vehicle. The available studies do not provide engine-variant comparisons, so a model’s position cannot substitute for a year-specific assessment.
- Confirm the model year and engine. Verify the exact engine code and equipment for the vehicle you are considering; a model name alone does not identify its powertrain.
- Check the drivetrain and intended use. Confirm the drivetrain configuration and consider whether the vehicle’s past use matches what you need it to do.
- Review maintenance records. Look for documented, consistent service rather than assuming a high-ranked model has been maintained well. iSeeCars analyst Karl Brauer describes these vehicles as capable of more than a quarter-million miles of use “if properly maintained.”
- Investigate year- and variant-specific issues. Check for known problems affecting that engine, transmission, or model year, and have the specific vehicle inspected before purchase.
- Keep the statistic in perspective. A probability for an entire model is a population-level estimate, not a prediction that a particular used car will reach 250,000 miles.
Are any engines proven to be million-mile engines?
No engine-only winner or million-mile engine claim is established by these sources. The current comparative evidence supports conclusions about vehicle models’ odds of high mileage, not about which engine codes have the lowest failure rates. Establishing that would require variant-level evidence that accounts for model years, geography, sample and method, maintenance, and failures outside the engine.
