Where Are Indian Motorcycles Made? Who Owns Indian Motorcycle in 2026?

Indian motorcycles are currently manufactured in the United States, with Spirit Lake, Iowa, as the principal factory. Since February 2, 2026, Indian has operated as a standalone company controlled by majority owner Carolwood LP rather than Polaris.

Today’s Indian motorcycles are made in the United States. Indian Motorcycle identifies Spirit Lake, Iowa, as the home of its motorcycle factory and says the facility is where each new motorcycle begins and is assembled. The company also identifies Monticello, Minnesota, as part of its current manufacturing footprint.

The ownership answer changed on February 2, 2026. Indian Motorcycle is now a standalone company controlled by Carolwood LP, which acquired a majority stake from Polaris. Polaris, the company that revived the modern Indian brand after acquiring it in 2011, is no longer Indian Motorcycle’s controlling owner.

Where are Indian motorcycles made?

Modern Indian motorcycles are manufactured in the United States, with Spirit Lake, Iowa, serving as the brand’s principal motorcycle factory and assembly site. Indian Motorcycle also says its manufacturing operations are based at existing facilities in Spirit Lake, Iowa, and Monticello, Minnesota.

That is the most accurate current answer. It does not mean that every component is necessarily manufactured in America, nor does it establish that every complete motorcycle is assembled at both locations. Indian’s public announcements identify the facilities but do not provide a current model-by-model or component-by-component production breakdown.

Spirit Lake, Iowa: the main motorcycle factory

Indian Motorcycle describes its Spirit Lake facility as the home of Indian Motorcycle and the birthplace of each new motorcycle it makes. The production process starts with an engine and finishes with a complete, operational motorcycle leaving the assembly line. The facility employs approximately 550 skilled professionals, according to the company’s current factory information.

Spirit Lake should not be described as a completely hand-built workshop. Indian’s behind-the-scenes material emphasizes that riders assemble the motorcycles by hand, while earlier official factory information also describes the use of robotic machinery. The clearest description is that Spirit Lake combines skilled human assembly with advanced production equipment.

The site also includes the Indian Motorcycle Experience Center, with current and historic motorcycles and factory-tour or video-tour experiences. Tour availability is subject to change: Indian’s current information says that 2026 tours have resumed on select dates, while another support page cautions that guided tours may be limited or unavailable by appointment. Check the official Spirit Lake factory page before planning a visit.

Monticello, Minnesota: part of the current manufacturing network

Indian Motorcycle’s February 2026 ownership-transition announcement says the company will base all manufacturing out of its existing facilities in Spirit Lake and Monticello. However, that announcement does not say which models, engines, or components are assigned to Monticello.

Accordingly, Monticello is best described as part of Indian Motorcycle’s manufacturing footprint—not as a confirmed final-assembly location for every Indian motorcycle. Claims that a particular model or engine is made there require more specific, up-to-date documentation than the company has publicly provided in the cited announcement.

What about Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Switzerland?

Several other locations appear in Indian Motorcycle’s corporate and historical material, but they should not be confused with the primary final-assembly operation:

  • Wyoming, Minnesota, and Burgdorf, Switzerland: The 2026 announcement identifies these locations as industrial-design, technology, and product-development centers. They are part of Indian’s engineering and development network, not locations publicly described as the principal final-assembly plants for complete motorcycles.
  • Osceola, Wisconsin: An older official factory-tour support page identifies Osceola as an engine manufacturing and assembly facility. Because that page was produced during a period of transition and the newer standalone-company announcement gives the higher-level current manufacturing footprint, it is safer not to state that all Indian engines are currently made in Osceola.

For production questions, the current, supportable wording is: Indian motorcycles are built in the United States, principally through the Spirit Lake operation and the company’s manufacturing facilities in Spirit Lake and Monticello.

Who owns Indian Motorcycle now?

Carolwood LP is the majority owner and controlling owner of Indian Motorcycle. The Los Angeles-based private-equity firm acquired a majority stake from Polaris in a transaction that closed on February 2, 2026. Indian Motorcycle then announced that Carolwood had formally assumed ownership control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The word majority is important. The official announcements establish that Carolwood acquired a majority stake and control of the standalone business. They do not establish that Carolwood owns 100 percent of every legal entity or that no minority interest remains. Therefore, “Indian Motorcycle is majority-owned and controlled by Carolwood LP” is more precise than “Carolwood owns every part of Indian Motorcycle.”

What happened to Polaris?

Polaris acquired Indian Motorcycle in 2011 and rebuilt the modern version of the brand. Under Polaris, Indian returned to large-scale modern production and expanded its contemporary motorcycle range. Polaris announced in October 2025 that it would separate Indian Motorcycle into a standalone company and sell a majority stake to Carolwood.

That separation was completed on February 2, 2026. Polaris therefore remains an important part of Indian’s modern history, but “Polaris owns Indian Motorcycle” is now outdated if it is meant to describe the current controlling ownership structure.

Indian’s current customer-support information describes the company as standalone under its new majority ownership. The transition was intended to preserve customer-facing functions such as dealer support, parts, service, warranty assistance, and owner resources.

Who is running Indian Motorcycle?

Mike Kennedy became CEO of the standalone Indian Motorcycle Company following the transaction. Indian describes Kennedy as a motorcycle-industry veteran and says he will lead the brand’s next phase under Carolwood’s ownership.

Why people still associate Indian with Springfield, Massachusetts

The original Indian Motorcycle Company was founded in 1901 by George Hendee and Oscar Hedstrom in Springfield, Massachusetts. That original company produced historically important Indian motorcycles, but it stopped production in 1953.

The Indian name subsequently passed through multiple ownership, licensing, and revival efforts. Some later motorcycles carrying the Indian name were imported, while another revival involved a manufacturing facility in Kings Mountain, North Carolina. London-based private-equity firm Stellican acquired the assets of the Indian Motorcycle Company of America and later sold Indian Motorcycle to Polaris in 2011.

This history explains why different answers appear when people ask where Indian motorcycles are made. A vintage Springfield Indian, a Kings Mountain-era motorcycle, and a current Spirit Lake-built Indian belong to different production eras and ownership structures.

The modern brand has historical continuity, but it is not a continuous production line operating from the original Springfield factory. Today’s Indian motorcycles are not made in Springfield, Massachusetts. Springfield is the historic birthplace of the original company; Spirit Lake and the current U.S. manufacturing network are the relevant locations for modern production.

For readers who want a deeper look at those changes, Indian Motorcycle history book is a useful further-reading option, particularly when researching the transition from the original Springfield company through the later revivals, Polaris era, and current standalone business.

Does “made in America” mean every part is American-made?

No. The available official information supports the statement that Indian motorcycles are manufactured in U.S. facilities. It does not support the broader claim that every part is made in the United States or that every motorcycle is “100 percent American-made.”

A motorcycle assembled in Iowa or elsewhere in the United States can contain components sourced through an international supply chain. Without a current parts-sourcing statement from Indian Motorcycle, the responsible distinction is:

  • Supported: Current Indian motorcycles are manufactured in the United States.
  • Not established by the cited sources: Every component is domestically sourced.
  • Also not established: A particular model’s complete production sequence or every engine’s manufacturing location.

How to identify where a specific Indian motorcycle came from

For a particular motorcycle, the most useful starting point is its VIN and model-year information—not a general statement about the brand’s current factory network. Indian’s owner-support resources include a VIN lookup tool covering model years 2006 to the present. Depending on the motorcycle and available records, the tool can provide the model, model year, factory configuration, engine serial number, warranty status, bulletins, manuals, parts catalogs, and available accessories.

Use the Indian Motorcycle owner-support page and its VIN resources for the motorcycle’s individual records. This is especially important when checking a used bike, ordering parts, confirming factory configuration, or determining which service information applies.

Owner resources after the ownership change

The ownership change does not turn older motorcycles into Polaris products or alter their original model year. It does, however, explain why current company information may now refer to Indian Motorcycle as a standalone business rather than as a Polaris brand.

Indian continues to provide online owner’s manuals, dealer and service information, warranty resources, parts catalogs, accessories, and VIN lookup support. Owner’s manuals can be accessed online. Official service manuals are available for purchase through Indian’s service-manual process; choose the manual for the exact model and year, and remember that advanced repairs may require dealer-level tools, training, or procedures.

For owners looking for technical documentation, an Indian Motorcycle service manual is the appropriate resource when it matches the motorcycle’s exact model and year. It should not be treated as interchangeable with a generic repair guide or a manual for a similar-looking model.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Indian motorcycles still made by Polaris?

No. Polaris acquired and revived the modern Indian brand in 2011, but its separation and sale of a majority stake closed on February 2, 2026. Indian Motorcycle now operates as a standalone company controlled by Carolwood LP.

Is Indian Motorcycle an American company?

Modern Indian motorcycles are manufactured in the United States, and the brand has American historical roots. However, the cited sources do not establish that every component is made domestically, so “100 percent American-made” is too broad.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where was the original Indian Motorcycle Company located?

The original company was founded in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1901. That historic factory is not the production site for today’s Indian motorcycles.

Can I visit the Indian Motorcycle factory?

Indian offers factory-tour or video-tour experiences connected with its Spirit Lake, Iowa, facility, but dates and availability change. Check the company’s current factory page before making travel plans.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Current Indian motorcycles are manufactured in the United States, with Spirit Lake, Iowa, serving as the brand’s principal motorcycle factory and Monticello, Minnesota, identified as part of its manufacturing footprint. Indian is no longer controlled by Polaris. After the transaction closed on February 2, 2026, Carolwood LP became the company’s controlling majority owner, and Mike Kennedy became CEO of the standalone Indian Motorcycle Company.
