When Will Waymo Launch in Washington, D.C.? 2026 Was a Target, Not a Confirmed Start

Waymo’s 2026 Washington, D.C., robotaxi launch was a target dependent on regulatory changes. The latest cited reports describe Council action as pending, and do not confirm public rides.

Waymo announced a plan to make its Waymo One driverless ride-hailing service available in Washington, D.C., in 2026. That date was a target—not confirmation that rides began. The District’s published guidance allows autonomous-vehicle testing with a human operator behind the wheel, while reports in July and August 2026 described legislation to permit robotaxis as still under consideration. As of October 8, 2026, the available sources do not verify either the bill’s current status or a public launch.

What Waymo announced—and what it did not confirm

On March 25, 2025, Waymo said Waymo One “will be ready for riders” in Washington, D.C., in 2026. The company also said it would work with policymakers to formalize regulations for operating without a human behind the wheel. The announcement therefore described an intended launch dependent on regulatory change, not a confirmed service start. Waymo’s announcement and Associated Press coverage from March 25, 2025 document the plan.

Waymo’s announcement also reported more than 200,000 fully autonomous paid trips per week and more than 50 million fully autonomous miles. Those were company-reported figures from March 2025, not independently verified figures or a current total. They describe the company’s broader service, not rides in Washington, D.C.

Can you ride in a Waymo in D.C. yet?

The sources available through October 8, 2026, do not confirm that public driverless Waymo rides have started in the District. Nor do they establish a launch date, service area, fares, or whether booking is available in the Waymo One app. A planned 2026 launch should not be treated as proof of current availability.

Waymo’s local facilities are not evidence that rides are open to passengers. An August 6, 2026, report said the company had leased a third D.C. location for charging and maintenance, including a reported 32,000-square-foot maintenance and tire facility, while describing rollout as pending Council action. Axios reported on the facilities and pending bill.

Why testing does not mean robotaxis can carry passengers

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) says its current rules allow autonomous-vehicle testing only, with an operator behind the wheel who is ready to take over. Testing under that arrangement is a different stage from commercial, public ride-hailing without a driver.

For testing on District-owned roads, DDOT guidance says people or companies bringing an SAE Level 3–5 automated vehicle into the District must notify the agency at least 10 business days before testing begins. They must also report crashes that occur while the automated system is engaged. DDOT notes that District-owned roads make up most, but not all, roads in the District. These testing requirements do not authorize a driverless taxi service. See DDOT’s autonomous-vehicle guidance.

In April 2026, DDOT said it had released a research report reviewing AV technology, existing research, regulatory approaches, and interviews. The agency described the report as a foundation for future decisions, not as policy recommendations or authorization for commercial driverless rides. DDOT’s page provides its guidance and report information.

The Council bill and the issues under debate

July 2026 reporting described a D.C. Council bill to legalize robotaxi operations and a public hearing focused on jobs and privacy. A separate report described negotiations over the bill and a possible fall vote anticipated at the time. These reports show that authorization remained a legislative question; they do not establish what happened after the latest coverage cited here.

Among the reported proposals was a limit of 200 robotaxis and a fee of 15 cents per vehicle mile. Both figures were proposals, not confirmed operating rules. Waymo’s public policy representative Matt Walsh objected to the proposed cap, saying, “What we don’t want is a cap that restricts our ability to effectively serve the District,” as quoted by Axios on July 20, 2026.

The debate also involved whether the District should move quickly. Council member Charles Allen told Axios, “I don’t think D.C. needs to be the first, but I also don’t want us to be the last.” At the hearing, Waymo Director of Product Management David Margines addressed concerns about vehicle sensors, saying, “No, it cannot see through your clothes,” according to Axios’s July 13, 2026, report. These remarks are part of the reported debate; they do not resolve the bill’s status or establish final privacy rules.

Question What the available sources establish
Did Waymo announce a D.C. launch plan? Yes. Waymo announced on March 25, 2025, that Waymo One was intended to be ready for riders in 2026, subject to formalizing rules for driverless operation. Waymo.
Does D.C. allow driverless commercial rides under the described current rules? DDOT’s published guidance says testing only, with an operator behind the wheel; the sources here do not establish authorization for commercial driverless ride-hailing. DDOT.
Was a Council bill being considered? July and August 2026 reporting described a bill and rollout as pending. Its status after the August 6 report is not established here. Axios.
Are there confirmed fleet limits, fares, or booking details? No confirmed fleet limit, fare, service area, launch date, or booking availability is established. The 200-vehicle cap and 15-cent-per-mile fee were reported proposals, not enacted terms.

Waymo announced expansions to four additional U.S. cities in February 2026, but that separate company expansion does not establish that D.C. service began. Associated Press coverage reported that expansion.
