What happened to Conan O’Brien’s Taurus?
O’Brien bought the green Taurus SHO in his twenties, before he knew whether he would land a writing job on The Simpsons. The car later became a recurring part of his comedy and public persona. He described its manual transmission as part of what made it unusual to him. Car and Driver’s September 8, 2025 report recounted the car’s history, and O’Brien gave a fuller account on Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend in a conversation with Nate Bargatze.
O’Brien said a colleague arranged for someone at Warner Bros. to check the parking garage and send photos. He described the car as dusty and grimy, still carrying its 1992 inspection sticker, with holes left from a staged shootout bit. He also said the car had not been driven in years. In August 2026, Ford Authority quoted him saying it “doesn’t even run.” Ford Authority’s August 31, 2026 report said his earlier restoration plan had not yet come to fruition.
Why does the car need work?
Clutch damage
O’Brien attributed clutch damage to Brad Pitt performing a peel-out in the Taurus during a television segment. Recalling the episode on the podcast, he said: “And later on I noticed, oh, the clutch is all fucked. Brad Pitt fucked up my Ford Taurus.” Car and Driver also recounted the clutch damage. The sources do not give a diagnosis of the car’s current mechanical condition beyond the report that it does not run.

Body and interior damage
The holes O’Brien described came from a mock shootout staged for a bit. Car and Driver also reported interior damage. Neither account provides a repair estimate or a confirmed inventory of what would need replacement, so the full scope of restoration work remains unknown.
Is Ford restoring Conan O’Brien’s car?
Not on the evidence currently reported. O’Brien said he had heard from Ford that it might rehabilitate the Taurus, but that wording indicates a possibility, not a confirmed agreement. No source establishes that Ford has formally taken responsibility, approved a specific scope of work, started repairs, or set a schedule. Ford’s general owner-support information does not confirm involvement with O’Brien’s car.

What restoration does O’Brien want?
O’Brien has said he wants to get the car rehabilitated and chronicle the process. His stated interest is clear; the practical details are not. The available accounts do not identify a restoration shop, explain whether original or replacement parts would be used, or say when filming or repairs might begin.
In the podcast conversation, O’Brien described the car as where his “220 horses” lived. That is his comic line as reported by Car and Driver, not an independently verified specification for this particular car.
